No way in hell that will (or should) happen. AFL would never allow it in a million years. If they're willing to support Melbourne, North and the Dogs you really think they're going to let Essendon go? Haha why even bother discussing it, will never happen.
The AFL don't have a choice, if 17 clubs say enough, then they are out.

Essendon wouldn't be allowed to die out completely. They would become a Tasmanian team or be merged with GWS.

I can imagine Little is only just realising today that the other 17 clubs are far from impressed.

No, i don't believe so.

I do. The reason WADA are so strong on the "athletes are responsible" line is that "I didn't know I was taking a banned substance" is too easy to trot out. In fact every athlete since Ben Johnson HAS trotted it out.

The rules are harsh but they have to be. All athletes, footballers included, are told repeatedly that they are ultimately responsible for what is found in their bodies.

There are two issues here.

One is the use of banned substances by the Essendon Football Club.
The other is ASADA and the AFL's handling of the situation

I cannot condone the first issue but I am not entirely happy with second one either. ASADA and the AFL's handling of this affair has been an absolute shambles. I did not vote because I think the poll misses the point.

The Club that I support will likely come out as an innocent victim in this because we traded for a player from Essendon BEFORE all of this came to light. I guess we will accept the verdict and move on but if it comes to ASADA proving a case I sure would like us to pursue some compensation for losing Angus Monfries over something we had no hand in. If Gus is suspended for six months maybe he should be excluded from our salary cap for 2015 to allow us to replace him?

I guess the even bigger question is what happens if Essendon lose their action and 34 players are suspended from competition for six months? How will they field a side? We could finish with a bye in 2015.

I think it's you who misses the point because of your self interest.

Regardless of how well ASADA and the AFL handed the investigation, it doesn't change what happened at Essendon - this is an argument that's being put forth a lot that somehow seeks to blame the AFL and ASADA for investigating and uncovering this.

Monfries is just as responsible for what goes into his body as every other play is (under WADA and ASADA codes). You can't point the finger at the administrators for acting on it.

cheat is an interesting word.. Richmond in a game a few years ago rushed behind after behind after behind to win a match by just walking it over time and time and again to run the clock down

Against the spirit of the game yes
Bringing the game into disrepute yep
Cheating ? well yes
Did they get kicked out? no

This attempt at defence demonstrates why Essendon needs to be fried.

False equivalence is the Devil's delight.

They simply...dont...get it.

A complete bogan club. All clubs have bogan elements, but Essendon have managed to make their entire ethos bogan.

The same petty mix of entitlement and lack of personal responsibility, and it has become so sickening it threatens what little remains of the competition's relevance and credibility.

Depart, I say; and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!

There are some really lovely people in this thread. :)
Postings on this thread have been nowhere near as nasty and vicious as those posted by the deluded lemmings on the Jamestown, AKA Essendon board. At least on this thread contrary views can be posted, unlike the star chamber environment on the Essendon board.

I did have some sympathy for Essendon supporters and players earlier on, however that has evaporated with their arrogant intransigence, and refusal to admit any wrongdoing at all. As far as I am concerned they are pariahs, and should be treated as such. I hope they get the heaviest penalties possible.

If Nathan Buckley had been responsible for overseeing a similar programme at my club as James Hird has done, I would want him banned for life.

Exactly. Otherwise you get the situation like the East German athletics team, or the Chinese swim team, or the Bulgarian weightlifters, who were just doing as they were told by the coaches and medical staff. The ultimate principle behind the anti-doping code is that the individual competitors are suspended from competition if they are found to have taken banned substances. It's the only way to do it, otherwise people will devise schemes to dope "accidentally on purpose" and players will get off scot-free as long there is plausible deniability. This is why teams and players have to be so careful.

Hell no. Like the post says almost 100% of non Essendon fans i know (and even some Essendon fans) think Little, Hird and the club have had a complete ridiculous and arrogant attitude. They seem incapable of taking responsibility. The thought that they did the wrong thing and should accept the consequences for what they did is not in their dictionary. My dislike for them has far surpassed anything I've ever felt for Collingwood.

Confirms to me they are drug cheats who will persue any means of avoiding sanction.

This is straight from the Armstrong playbook.

I wonder if the head in sand brigade are still drinking whenever Armstrong is mentioned? I'm guessing they don't find it quite so funny anymore.

Still crying over that one? :D

Bowden did nothing illegal. The Bombers did.

What ever people say about Collingwood being feral and the like, I don't think they've ever cheated. Their achievements have always being legal.

Essendon members need to call an immediate vote and sack their board. If they dont Little will tear their club apart over this. I thought John Elliot's conduct through our salary cap investigations were arrogant and shameful. No pun intended but Little is like Elliot jacked on steroids.

Just argue your defence on whatever merits you have left, by going the chewbacca defence you're just painting your club as guilty in the eyes of the wider football public.

Very few support essendon over this

Regardless of if anything illegal/immoral was undertaken, the way they have acted has made them look childish, and actually made them look guilty

Many forget there was a second club involved in this, I believe is was Penrith in the NRL
they cooperated, and just one player was suspended
They came out clean, and have been widely commended for the way they've handled things

I should thank Little was on the way to Gym when I heard that, had a massive session and pumped out some big sets. Nearly got in a fight also, I really need to get a life ;)
What was the fight over?
I'm pleased to see the results of this poll. I'm pleased that in modern sport supporters understand that drug use is now found not by tests, but by investigation, and bodies such as ASADA need sweeping powers to be able to conduct these investigations. And they do - which is why I can't even really understand the basis of Essendon's appeal.

It really just looks like refusing to accept your own misgivings to the detriment of the game, and really just trying to delay the inevitable.

So all you're doing is prolonging the damage for the game, for your own players and their families, and for your members and supporters.

It just seems incredibly short sighted by the Bombers. And it could potentially go on forever, because they're bringing the game into that disrepute area all over again.

Pricks.

Great, so lets ditch the drug testing and start the afl wide investigation. Multiple clubs found with suspect programs = multiple clubs investigated. If multiple clubs were investigated and put through the ringer like EFC have been it would be the end of AFL. Ping one club, make and example, appear to 'make a stand' against drugs in sport, job done AFL/ASADA.
