Watching the game last night and I couldn't help commenting, that once upon a time St Kilda had a great deal of talent and many sides were envious of their depth of quality. Yet, now they appear to be battle weary, and they're one of the teams we will have a good chance of beating and finish above them.
So then a mate asked me who would we want, or could fit into the hawk team - and then I had to scratch my head for sometime.
First was Hayes, but I must admit that he was one of those battle weary players I was alluding to. Ideally I said, i'd preferred him at his best, but still he is good in the contests and is a good user.
Next was Dal Santo. I'm not a massive fan of his, because I think he's quite soft and heavily overated, but I think in our team he would surf the packs and get a lot of loose ball. Yet, I would only be willing to pay him around half of what he is one with them, otherwise we couldn't keep our better players. Then, I thought, we actually have a lot of left footers, that are predominantly kickers, so we need a guy good by hand and Ellis does appear to use well by hand. Pass on Dal Santo.
Next was Riewoldt. Again, another massively overated player that wouldn't live up to his market value, but if we could squeeze him in, with Franklin already owning our front paddock, I'l let him roam at half back, where his quetionable goal kicking wouldn't be a loss. But he would never live up to the $'s you would have to pay him.
However, I do like the Fisher's because we need a quality key back, and another good tagger/half back. They're not to pricey either. Baker wouldn't be too bad either as a tagger. Then I like that Gram, because he is very attacking and can kick long goals - those players are always dangerous in being able to kick over the zone.
Many of the others like kosi are always injured, so just aren't worth it, and that includes Ball, who while having a great deal of ability, just si treading water to me.
Lastly, because I don't want to go on forever, I asked my mate whether he thought whether Goddard is better than Guerra, because they both play the sweeper role. He said 'nope', which I would have to agree whole heartedly. The example was Guerra's high posession loose man game last week, which is what Goddard was doing a couple of seasons ago at his best. And considering that Goddard was a no.1 pick, and Guerra a reject from their club, I think we're done alright.
Topic is rather insulting to the Saints, but think it is interesting and people are free to roll off some names.
