Watching the game last night and I couldn't help commenting, that once upon a time St Kilda had a great deal of talent and many sides were envious of their depth of quality. Yet, now they appear to be battle weary, and they're one of the teams we will have a good chance of beating and finish above them.

So then a mate asked me who would we want, or could fit into the hawk team - and then I had to scratch my head for sometime.

First was Hayes, but I must admit that he was one of those battle weary players I was alluding to. Ideally I said, i'd preferred him at his best, but still he is good in the contests and is a good user.

Next was Dal Santo. I'm not a massive fan of his, because I think he's quite soft and heavily overated, but I think in our team he would surf the packs and get a lot of loose ball. Yet, I would only be willing to pay him around half of what he is one with them, otherwise we couldn't keep our better players. Then, I thought, we actually have a lot of left footers, that are predominantly kickers, so we need a guy good by hand and Ellis does appear to use well by hand. Pass on Dal Santo.

Next was Riewoldt. Again, another massively overated player that wouldn't live up to his market value, but if we could squeeze him in, with Franklin already owning our front paddock, I'l let him roam at half back, where his quetionable goal kicking wouldn't be a loss. But he would never live up to the $'s you would have to pay him.

However, I do like the Fisher's because we need a quality key back, and another good tagger/half back. They're not to pricey either. Baker wouldn't be too bad either as a tagger. Then I like that Gram, because he is very attacking and can kick long goals - those players are always dangerous in being able to kick over the zone.

Many of the others like kosi are always injured, so just aren't worth it, and that includes Ball, who while having a great deal of ability, just si treading water to me.

Lastly, because I don't want to go on forever, I asked my mate whether he thought whether Goddard is better than Guerra, because they both play the sweeper role. He said 'nope', which I would have to agree whole heartedly. The example was Guerra's high posession loose man game last week, which is what Goddard was doing a couple of seasons ago at his best. And considering that Goddard was a no.1 pick, and Guerra a reject from their club, I think we're done alright.:thumbsu:

Topic is rather insulting to the Saints, but think it is interesting and people are free to roll off some names.

The saints had, and still have talent, but, they are not a team. Those players are very selfish and would not fit in our team. Our players do the 1%ers, the unrecognised things, such as a shepard. very simple, but means anything. Veyr rarely see a shepard from the saints

Armitage is class! He's going to be a star. Saying no to that is just pure arrogance.

Yeah, I'd find a spot for him too. I'd take Hayes in the blink of an eye as well as Riewoldt and Del Santo. Given our lack of height down back I would take Fischer too and Maguire if he gets fit as well. Maybe Montagna and Ball was a 2nd pick in the best draft ever. He's got to be good. Bring him to our facilities with out coaches and we'd make a star of him.

you guys are so smug with your team at the moment...its rather funny...

no doubt the hawks are chock loaded with talent however one good season (well you finished 5th...or was it 6th) doesnt really create such arrogance that your forum displays

wait until the tables turn and clarkson looses a few on the trot...

A lot of arrogant posts being started by supporters of a team that still has a lot to prove. Wait 'til we beat St Kilda before you start this sort of tripe thread - you may recall they are a bogey team of ours.

Try to keep your egos in check and remember that we still have a long way to go.

This is what Bay 13 is for. It's funny to see how many of you Hawks supporters have played along with it. Most of you are probably taking the piss, but to the ones that aren't, you are not that great. Hayes, Riewoldt, Dal Santo, Koschitzke, Ball, Goddard, Montagna, Gram, Hudghton and Maguire would all make your team. You wouldn't trade for Harvey, but if he was already on your list, he'd be in your team. Go through your 22, and honestly tell me that all of your players are better than any of the ones I've mentioned.

i asked the exact same question last nite but about the bombers. despite the commentators always talking up their exciting game style, who would you really want on your list? i struggled to about a 1/2 dozen. they are in for a lean season.

the saints won easily last nite and have a lot of class.

bay 13 - what are you taking about? this is the hawthorn board and we're talking about hawthorn and st kilda.

for those of you who hadn't obviously read my introduction, part of the equation in getting a st kilda player to our club was
a) through a trade
b) fitting them into our salary cap

that's why most of those players aren't realistically obtainable, because their ability doesn't match their market value. and thats part of this sensationalistic rating of the players based on having a young team, once upon a time, and loads of talent, which is not quite the case now.

besides all of that, i did say that saint supporters wouldn't like to see this, and thats why it is on our board.

certainly there may be noticeable arrogance, but then it is part of the bias towards our team.

and you know, at the end of the day, our club has been heckled a lot over not trading in trade week - often people say we want more than we're willing to give, but the reality is that our rationale is much closer to what i'm saying about trading with st kilda. that is, the players aren't worth what you have to pay or give.

finally, i too recognise that we haven't done anything yet, and we'll be dreading playing against the swans considering they're an even greater hodoo team for us. don't worry, i often criticise the club and suggest how we must improve, even when we're winning, and many other hawk fans here will testify to that!

Let's not get too smug yet just cause we've got a few wins in a row. We're beginning to sound like geelong supporters, or even worse essendon supporters when they used to be good (I can't remember when this was though...so long ago).

There are plenty of players on their list that would be in our 22 if we had them. That being said I doubt we are going to trade for them any time soon, but if any of the ones mentioned above by other people became available at a reasonable price during trade week then I'm sure we'd have a look.

Plenty of their players would make our 22.

A combined team would look something like this:

B: C Brown, M Maguire, S Fisher
HB: B Goddard, T Croad, N Dal Santo
C: S Crawford, L Hayes, C Bateman
HF: C Rioli, N Riewoldt, L Hodge
F: M Williams, J Roughead, L Franklin
R: R Campbell, S Mitchell, B Sewell
IC: J Koschitzke, L Ball, J Lewis, L Montagna

Plenty of their players are good enough for our 22.
