I'm nowhere near as stridently against Beveridge continuing as many in this thread. However, I am definitely coming to the view that he is not a good match day coach. We've seen on too many occasions that opposition coaches make the right moves both before and during matches to bring us undone. Beveridge just doesn't seem capable of turning things around tactically. Whether this means that we should part ways with him or not I will leave in the hands of others more qualified to make such decisions.

Isn’t that why we brought Lade in?

AFL round 22: Hawthorn defeat Bullsogs 67-64, Chad Wingard suffers suspected achilles tear

The Bulldogs’ finals hopes are in serious danger after their loss to the in-form Hawks, with coach Luke Beveridge lamenting his side’s record in close games of recent times.

AFL: The Western Bulldogs have blown their chance to play finals footy after having a mental lapse in the final minute of their clash with the Hawks.

A third loss by less than a goal in their past five matches has put the Western Bulldogs’ finals hopes on a tightrope after Sunday’s three-point loss to Hawthorn in Launceston.
And the Bulldogs’ woes could be compounded by the potential loss of tough midfielder Tom Liberatore as they look to win their last two games to sneak into the top eight.
They will be in either eighth or ninth spot at the end of this round, depending on Sunday’s other results, with matches against West Coast (home) and the Cats in Geelong to finish the season.
The Bulldogs’ finals hopes are now in serious jeopardy after finding themselves on the wrong side of a thriller yet again.
It follows a two point loss to the Swans in Sydney in round 18, and a five-point loss to the Giants at Ballarat in round 20.
“We’ve lost three games in the last six or so by under a goal. Two of those we’ve lost key position players and we haven’t been able to stabilise too well, but hung in there,” Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge said.

“We came again when the game looked almost lost, which is a positive, but throughout the course of the game we weren’t doing enough.
“We had a really stale period after half time where we couldn’t create any ball movement, we couldn’t get the ball.
“They (Hawthorn) won it at the coal face and by and large our backs held on pretty well but we just couldn’t create any opportunities.

“But you give credit to the Hawks for how they played the game, and some of their individuals who were really influential.”
Beveridge said they won’t take any chances with Liberatore, who was kept quiet by Hawks tagger Finn Maginness before he exited the game midway through the second quarter.
He seems highly unlikely to play the lowly Eagles, but the Bulldogs will be desperate to get their best contested possession player back before what could be a must-win game at Geelong.
“He’ll go into concussion protocols and there’ll be an update during the week,” Beveridge said.
“He seems OK, but as always we’ll take precautions and take a conservative approach with him.
“The simple look at the game was they broke too many of our tackles, those disputed ball situations they won a lot more than us.
“You think we could have been so much better in a lot of areas, but you also think Hawthorn are improving. We knew it was going to be a difficult task, and we fell short.”

Blah blah blah blah Bevo response “we’ll learn from it”.

if the players are not following his instructions then either

  • Bev has lost the playing group, or
  • players who should be dropped aren’t because they’re favourite pet projects

his position will be untenable with the path the results and team is heading

No idea how anyone could still think he’s the man of the job. There’s so much wrong with the team atm.

I’m sick of watching Naughton, JUH and Weightman fly for the same ball. I’m sick of 90% of the time Dale and Richards look up there’s nothing to kick to. I’m sick of The opposition having free men inside 50. I’m definitely sick of other teams going on 30+ point runs and us doing nothing.

Look at what we’ve got atm. Bontempelli, arguably the best player in the league. Liberatore, the best inside mid in the league. English, the soon to be AA ruck. A superstar supporting midfield of Treloar, Macrae, Smith. A gun half back line of two AA’s in Dale and Daniel and a bloke who could very well of been one this year in Richards. The two best key forwards in the comp under 23 in Jamarah and Naughton. And we are nowhere near it. It’s genuinely embarrassing.

I guess all that’s left to hope for is Bont to win the brownlow so it’s not a total waste of a year.

No. None.

I'd be more than happy to be proven wrong. I suspect we'll towel up WCE so doesn't prove anything, other than an expected 4 points.

IF we beat Geelong, and somehow rediscover our mojo during finals, I'll be pleasantly surprised, and happy to revisit my current opinion.

But I'm pretty confident we'll neither beat Geelong nor show any ticker on field or in the box if we still stumble into finals.

I also have next to no faith the club will manage to reinforce support structures around the coach, manage any significant inbound trades that significantly enhance the list, or rejig the list to even begin to cover our deficiencies, starting with mids with pace and better than average skills.

Next year will be my 51st straight year of membership. I've still got auto renew in place - but the combined cost of membership, social club and seats for 4 people are already biting due to challenging personal circumstances this year. Even living in the Greater Ballarat area, we will definitely not be attending any Ballarat games in 2024. The next decision is whether to drop social club - or seats we've held for 23 seasons.

I'm not sure the club GAF about individual members though.

Wow 51 years! Thanks for supporting the club through thick and thin

That loss yesterday sealed it for me with Bevo. He let Matt Rowell kill us in Darwin, he let Toby Greene single handedly beat us in Ballarat and now he just let Jai Newcomb tear us a new one in Tassie. He was too stubborn to tag him, too stubborn to put West in the middle on him, Newcomb may have killed it still? but at least he would have done something. I think he put B Smith in the middle, but no tag, not only did Smith fumble dreadfully but allowed Newcomb to just do as he wished. Bevo is highly paid and so is Chris Grant as are Webb, Spangler, R Smith and Lade yet between them all they still didn’t decide to tag Newcomb???? Negligent in their duty to the footy club. How much more intelligent and cunning and competitive is Sam Mitchell? Gee if we had Sam Mitchell we’d be an amazing team.

I want the campaigners head on a pike at this point.

Absolutely filthy.
What a shithouse comment about only our second Premiership coach since 1925.

This board is toxic.

He seemed to have Treloar go the tag on Newcombe who is probably the worst player in our midfield group to do it. I couldn't believe it in the 3rd when Treloar was chosen as the man.

Smith is out of form but when sent to Cripps or another 'star' from the opposition, he gets run to the right spots and his workrate is there. Right now Smith either plays a run with role, or gets dropped.

There some angry posts but most are making good points. Dogbones is still pro Bevo but has admitted he is not a good match day coach, Geoff Jennings is a 50 year plus member and Mike the mod are all making valid arguments against Bevo continuing. We all know he is a Bullgod but something is definitely, not just wrong, but very wrong in the whole footy department. And the silence from Grant, Ameet and KWW is deafening to us supporters.

That's all good, and everyone can say yay or nay (and most do respectfully) but that particular comment I quoted was a poor one.

As it stands, the most likely scenario is he continues next year in a different role - more Ken Hinkley style (as has been alluded to recently on a different site) with a senior assistant pulling more of the strings.

For the record I'm actually comfortable for Bevo to continue if his role is changed/reduced as per that scenario. I don't think he can continue in the current level of role/responsibility so it's either a change of role, or he steps down for me.
If he did step down I certainly wouldn't want to wish harm on the bloke, or any of our players (and some of what they've copped on social media is absolutely criminal).

On top of your last point the lack of accountability is frustrating and the way bevo justifies poor performances after losses I'd extremely hard to stomach. How he can justify keeping up with middle of the road and bottom teams as promising when speaking to media and fans is nothing but ìnsuĺting to supporters in my opinion.
