I don't see it that way. The Bont , Macrea/Treloar/West + Smith/VDM/Baker playing a hard tag on Newcombe.
We wouldn't have lost anything, considering we were getting smashed anyway.
Also, there's no reason why we couldn't have pulled a Sam Mitchell and put negating players on Hawthorn's key playmakers across the ground when the game looked like slipping away.

Putting a Tag almost seems like a pipe dream under Bev.

I would have settled on someone be next to Newcombe so he was conscious there was someone on him instead of letting run on his own.

Wonder how may times this year a player has had 40 possessions in a game?

Negligent on our behalf.

Bailey Smith has had run with roles a few times this year. His game on Cripps was his most impactful for this season. Baz absolutely should have gone to Newcombe.

Instead Treloar was having a poor have and was sent to Newcombe as a taggish kind of role, and he was ineffectual at it.

I'd argue that Treloar is the last bloke I'd choose to tag against with.

I'd also suggest Smith having a run with role would be the quickest way to bring him back to form. Guys like him need something to take away all distractions and go with what comes more naturally.
He isn't the kind of player that needs/likes set plays or running patterns, "just go out there and get the ball and burst Forward or if not block Newcombe's run/tackle at all costs". That game is in a much better state when his allowed to show dare and moments of brilliance.

Smith looks to fall off a lot of tackles. He had 5 but could have 10. Taggers don't miss that often.

Our cupboard is bare of quick mids who don't fall off tackles. Also quick and skilled ball winning mids who can burst from stoppages.

Our pace is out of defence.

Part of me thinks our best winning hope with this list this season is Sydney 2005 style. Boring as all get out but effective.

So bring Macrae back to the set up, get West in there (he's tough and deserves a shot on his last month) and bring Sweet in as the main ruck. A treacle slow set up but aim to force a secondary stoppage from CBs, get numbers behind the ball and then run with JJ, Richard et Al.

I guess we just embrace our sluggish midfield and grind down the opposition clearance mids and ruck a la Swans 2005.

Timmy roams. Sweet does the grinding.

Are you suggesting Timmy, Sweet and Lobb all in the 22?

Timmy gets back to help the defense a lot. In the absence of a gun interceptor and a decent CHB we can't afford to lose Timmy.

Not advocating we lose Timmy for the exact reasons you state Mof. Essentially Lobb makes way for Sweet. Maybe Scrags dream of Timmy on the wing comes true🤣

Bevo has said numerous times that we play with 5 forwards most of the time. 2 talls and 3 rabbits fwd. That'd be Marra and Naughts plus 3 smalls in this scenario. I'll nominate Jones, Weightman and Clarke plus Scott amongst others. Timmy with his vision and skills roaming but not rucking unless Sweet is catching his breath.

This is a how can we possibly win this year throw at the stumps rather than any medium term solution. For that we need an injection of some serious quick midfield talent through draft or trade at season's end.

I've backed in Bevo for ages but today has to be the last straw he's done

Its a shame really cause he pulled us out of a very bad spot and took us to our first flag in 62 years but i think he has outstayed his welcome

I think the board would be smart to talk with him about it and try and persuade him to resign/retire

Good coach but outstayed his welcome and needs some time away to reset and get away from the weekly grind
