Do you still miss not having these players around?

I was just reading something about James Hird and feeling a little nostalgic towards the recently departed champions of the game.

How long does it take people to stop missing the freshly departed stars?

Do you kind of feel like the ghosts of Hird, Buckley, Ricciuto, Voss etc? I still miss Kouta.

I'm looking excitedly towards the next generation but it is hard to think you won't see these legendary players on the field again.

Maybe it is a sign of time marching on and wanting to cling to our own youth or something.

I know I freak when I realise how old some of my childhood football heroes are now.

Rock bands can make comebacks and be just as good. How great would it be to be able to turn back the clock for a one off game between some of the greats.

Do opposition supporters appreciate greats from other teams more once they are gone than they did while they were playing?

Have supporters of the teams these guys played for gotten used to not having them around any more?

I get that Skip, I still miss Sticks, Diesel, Bradley and co, but enough time has passed. The latest batch of champions, it still feels very recent. You still remind yourself they are not around.

Makes you realise you have to appreciate these guys when they are around instead of finding ways to denigrate them because they are not part of your team.

No more Hodge, Judd, Goodes bashing please. These guys will be in the game for far too short a time and will be revered for eternity. Sometimes I think we are watching something that will be part of folklore and only truly appreciate it in hindsight.

agreed. i will miss fev when he goes. such a caracter. and his goal kicking is ability is unmatched

From a club point of view, I really miss Bucks and Clement playing for the Pies. Just loved watching these guys play. No doubt I'll feel the same about Burns once the seasons starts next year. Even watching some highlights from a few years ago, I get nostalgic for some players who I admired greatly at the time who never really went on to make it at the top level.

But yeah, it feels like yesterday that guys like Voss, Hird, Harvey, Kouta were all playing and tearing it up on the field, and it's very hard to fill the void that these players leave. I know people love comparing these players directly with others, but I feel as if these kinds of guys had a certain uniqueness which will never be seen again, and that does sadden me slightly.

The scary thing for you is that I was thinking the same thing only about an hour ago when reading another Goodes bashing thread. I almost posted that when he is gone people will only realise how good a player he is. The age thingo catches up with us TODN, brings out the nostalgia. The recent Harvey retirement and looking at how many of the current players fathers he played with or against, and that it seems like only yesterday they were playing.

It wont be long be Murphy, Gibbs and the like are racking up 200 games and it will seem like no time has passed.

On a different sport I am still getting over no Warne, no McGrath and no Gilly.

Good post. :thumbsu:

Definitely miss Hird without question. My favourite player. Although still miss Mercuri/Misiti too, even if they aren't greats.

I don't know if I can say I miss opposition teams greats but I certainly know I loved watching Ablett Snr, Carey, Pete Matera, Modra, Silvagni, Buckley, Voss, Paul Kelly, Wanganeen, Brereton, Dunstall etc etc play.

With time passing it becomes easier to forget just how good some of these guys were, while for other past players their legends grow.

Damn it, now you've got me feeling nostalgic!

i still miss Cousins and even Judd even though he is still around, wouldnt minda havin Phil or Peter Matera back either

Yeah, I read a derogatory comment about Hird which spurred me into action.

We are all guilty of it in one form or another, not giving credit. I avoid Buddy praise threads like the plague because I don't want to give him credit for anything. The truth is I am jealous as anything of his abilities and the fact the Hawks have him. I never bought into the whole Judd is the greatest vibe when the Eagles have him, but now that I watch closely and see what he can do, he has risen 10 fold in my estimation.

Jealousy is what motivates most posters to discredit other club's players. Fortunately, I don't partake in bagging players just because I am envious but I understand the mindset.

Gibbs, Deledio, Murphy, Cotchin etc .... all have or will feel the wrath of BigFooty jealousy at some point.

I was the same with Judd until I watched a few of his games as a neutral. Buddy, I just love watching. The arrogance, the big shoulders, the waving to the crowd, watching himself on the big screen. I love it.(obviously not when playing Sydney). Ablett jnr. For me its pure excitement seeing another freakish Ablett running around.

Basically I disregard any of the crap that is posted on here and love watching neutral games with champions playing.

I found it quite hard adjusting to so many great players leaving last year and not seeing them on the ground rather than behind the fence or in the commentary box. You still feel their presence in the game, even though they're just a thing in the past. It will be interesting for next year now that Harvs, Neitz, Thommo and a couple of bombers are gone, how the veterans will cope in a game full of youth.

However you look at the Saints next year you won't be able to not notice the absence of Harvey.

A True legend rolemodel, champion of the game and he i'm sure will be missed by all fans alike.

The person I miss the most, even though not AFL related, it is Warney, he made me watch test cricket, he glued me to my couch all day watching cricket, just loved watching him tear away at the Poms.

In AFL, it was watching Akermanis play in different colours. Then seeing Harvey not play after 21 seasons will be weird.

Sometimes when your teams doing crap, you think why cant these blokes still play, they were so good to watch, they made it look so easy.

For me, the nostalgia comes in close games.

It was always the way that Hird would put himself in the middle, and it was so often that he'd get it out and get the ball going our way.

He was the bloke that pushed us straight back up when we began to slip away.

All of a sudden, the path to the comeback goal doesn't seem as tried and true.

I still haven't gotten over Gavin Wanganeen leaving Essendon...(my brain does not register the retirement!).

He'll always be an Essendon legend....

great thread,

It's weird not seeing some of these greats not playing (bucks, riccuito). And it's sad to see such greats go, and knowing that their about to go (andrew mcleod) But we've always got the memories. You guys have the pleasure of seeing such greats rise to great heights, howver i've only really got in to footy mid last year :(, But i take pleasure watching the next generation of footballers, watching their failures and triumphs and filling in the void of the past greats.
