Let's get back to matters at hand,
not really interested in Jarrad Grant.

Must practice goal kicking all week. Have them out there all bloody night if necessary. Basic errors.

Messy sure but still dominant . Did anyone else see a lot of selfish play? Big Red was standing on his Pat in the goal square at least three times and was ignored.

On the players - Picken, Biggs (who has been a bit off) and Bonti excellent but hats off to the Defence as a unit - very hard to score against and press up to the half forward line very effectively.

Roberts is interesting - likely to be replaced by Adams - did some good things but also let people over the top easily - again played much better in the last quarter (a good mark and some smart touches). With injuries to Hanling we had to play him but Bevo seemed happy. Watching live the advantage is his positioning - generally very good - he moves really week into the zone position required. Nobody is pushing hard to takes his place - Zaine has been injured and perhaps a bit too small, Collins is so so raw - will do something great but then just U15s like. Hamling has been injured and not playing that well / ok but not knocking any doors down.

JJ appears to be playing conservatively to
Protect his string. Jong was OK but Dunkley just looks a touch above. Expect with Libba and Dahl over the next few weeks he may struggle but he certainly puts in.

Red was really good - kept leading but as above not rewarded.

Dickson still not back - missing marks and goals he would have eaten last year. He is trying but just off.

Stringer looks well off - not attaching the pack and isn't working to get out in front on the lead. Rest maybe good for him - new Dad and he has spoken about doing a lot of the work - just needs to freshen up for the finals - he will be fine and has far more space with Toyd in the team. BTW the hit by May was late and trying to take him out - wasn't reported but dirty - I was so hoping Red would give him one back!

Hunter and Macrae excellent - just really solid. Suckling was solid too. Roughead was better also.

Certainly took the foot off the pedal but won easily. Over next weeks we get Libba, Adams, Dahl and McLean and interested to see who else in the two's is pushing

I'm looking forward to seeing Williams back in as well. Allow JJ and Suckling to play on the wing- that would be exciting.

I was sitting next to the bench and at one stage of the match Morris who at the time was sitting on the exercise bike took the words out of my mouth and said to the others 'so many missed opportunities' I really wanted to turn around and see 'I agree' to him.

Yes we should have flogged them but at the end of the day a win is a win no matter how ugly it was.

We had a patch last year after the break where we played really awful footy but racked up important wins against st kilda, carlton and gold coast. It really set up our season for a finals tilt and then we hit our straps over the last five or so rounds. Can see the same thing happening this year, especially with all the players returning from injury.

Bank the four points. And Clay Smith, wow. Gonna be a massive x-factor come finals time.

let people over the top easily
Good post mate, but this part isn't Roberts' fault- if they have a guy free out the back, it's usually due to them getting an overlap number as they move the ball down the gorund, so our defenders have to push up to cover the free players around half forward and some players get left open out the back.

Cruised to an easy win tonight. Disappointing goalkicking although perhaps the wind and Smith's three posters need to be noted. Bont was outstanding. I think Wallis and Smith are comfortably our best available mids to rotate through the forward line, alongside Bont, while Jong and Picko can be handy down there too.

Loved having Boyd and Redpath in the side together. Good signs. The hate for Roberts is unwarranted. Wood superb, Biggs and Suckling great, Macrae and Daniel consistent throughout. Dickson played a decent game too. Good to see Koby is back.

Dunkley brilliant for a first year player. Frankly, that was a really solid game by the standards of 95% of the comp's midfielders, great signs. We're third on the ladder with Adams, Dahlhaus, McLean, Libba, Hrovat and Williams all to become available soon. After 16 rounds, we haven't lost to a team outside of the 8, let's continue that form next week against the Saints. Go Dogs

Hunter really impressed me last night with the contested side of his game and his tackling. He is far from the complete outside link up player I had him pencilled in as and regularly takes the hit to ensure we maintain the pill. I am still so amazed how hard he works off the ball the ensure we maintain possession and have an easy bailout kick. Kid is a star.

Dunkley is a jet. Yes the likes of Libba, Stringer, Bont are future (and current) superstars, but Dunks and Daniel may not be too far behind...

Was going to be very complimentary to Jong but then his second half happened, ditto Dickson.

You could interpret that as Jong played well when it counted, and didn't pick up a lot of cheap disposals late in the match.

Jong was good. He competed hard, made 9 tackles, won the contested ball, was involved in a lot of link up plays and hit the scoreboard. He drifted out of the match in the second half. He tends to do this sometimes, and it's one of the areas he needs to work on.

His form has been good over the past month. One could even say it has been excellent in the context of him being a fringe player and the midfields he has competed against have included Geelong and Sydney.

Although, I suspect it would take a 35 disposal, 3 goal, 10 tackle Norm Smith winning performance in a GF against Norf for a small minority on here to acknowledge that he has played a reasonable match. And even then they would pot him for not kicking the winning goal after the siren so we could celebrate in true glory.

As long as he returns to VFL soon (IIRC he was a week or two away), I reckon he may get another go in the last 2 weeks against Essendon or Freo

I reckon Biggs and Morris might need a rest above all our defenders as they've played every game so far, maybe Boyd but he had a week off already with the suspension so he might be ok

I think Roughy is the only other player who may need one leading up to September, it's a miracle he's got through unscathed so far, though we definitely will need him the next 4 weeks as there are some solid ruck opponents coming up and most of them are mobile types, particularly Goldstein and Grundy and those 4 games will shape our top 4 hopes.

We need to keep winning with our poor percentage.

Or people could just interpret things differently to you.
Playing only half a game (admittedly including one excellent quarter) against one of the worst midfields I've seen is not good enough and is a big reason why he will remain a fringe player. I'm very disappointed because I was ready to sing his praises after his first half. Then he comes out more fumbly than Djerkurra on his worst day. It's a real shame.

Hopefully he builds on his early game form next week.

Not all our midfielders are going to be one touch 35 disposal guns. It just doesn't work that way - there will always be tiers of quality.

I think you need to be more realistic in your expectations - the club are on record as being happy with his performances (no doubt whilst hoping for improvement that will turn him from a fringe player into a regular must pick contributor).

I think if he can become a B+ midfielder, as a support act to our preferred midfield starting lineup, then that would be fantastic and one step closer to a flag. I don't know if he will get there, but he is improving and giving it his all.

How massive is the game against Geelong in 2 weeks time? While I definitely want the players totally focussed on the Saints next week because they have often been our bogey team, assuming we get past the saints, we would essentially be playing for our spot in the top 4 and I would think if results go as expected, possibly even our spot in the top 2 at year end. We would start favourite in every other game this year and if Geelong defeat Adelaide at Shell Stadium next week and we beat the Saints that puts us second on points.

Therefore the following week is our biggest game in years. It would be very tough as I can't remember the last time we beat Geelong at Geelong. But if we pulled it off, that could mean the difference between home Prelim final or not. Absolutely massive....

Go Dogs!!! (And for gods sake practice you damn goal kicking, it could very well be the difference in getting home state advantage in the finals)
Yep a win at the Cattery is bloody rare.....even Ted Whitten never played in a winning side down there...what a game to beat them...of course the saints first

I honestly thought Jong was poor again. He didn't go in the air against lynch in the first quarter. Cost us a goal.

He kept the ball in in the last when clearly it just needed to get out. Cost us a goal.

He's consistently clumsy and he's just not a smart footballer. He's still the weakest link and I'm looking forward to Libba and dal getting back into the team.

Dunkley is a nice comparison to Jong. No way near as athletic, but smart and has great hands. Gimme that all day.

When I first had it, for around the first 24 hours it was truly epileptic. It is now no faster than Tom Boyd's turning circle, far from epileptic. I therefore do not understand the harsh criticism of my avatar unless you have it in for the drink (either one of them). You have missed out on reading some quality posts as a result of such bias.
It's still bloody annoying....
