I know Richmond were lacking in the tall forward department, but it was made clear tonight how bad that Keath-Gardner-Bruce trio has been. Not only defensively, but how they absolutely crippled our ball movement out of the backline.

Liam Jones is obviously outstanding defensively, and while he's not a clean kick, he moves fast and gets distance away from the heat.

I do find it slightly strange that for years we resisted going super tall in the backline, and when we do, we persisted with the god awful Gardner-Bruce-Keath trio with Jones unavailable. Even now, I wouldn't want to see Jones with both Keath and Gards - Bring one in if we must but both invites disaster.
Our defence has issues sure but the half back line is strong, crazy that we’ve completely taken away the strengths that they can bring by playing those three lumbering butchers together, really really poor stuff tbh - we’re our own worst enemy, just given ourselves no chance on a Thursday night

Sad to think of how many of those close losses over the last 10 weeks could have been wins with Jones playing.
As crap as last week was, imagine Richards and Jones in for McLeary and Bruce.

The Sydney, GWS and GC losses were some of the most frustrating I can remember and this could have been a top four year.

On the other hand, I think we’ve improved a bit on last year.

Some real positives tonight. Poulter was good, Naughton and JUH had good nights (though JUH sprayed some good opportunities late) and I though O’Donnell looked very composed with the ball.

Lacklustre opposition but a better performance and every game is winnable from here.

Even tonight I still don’t think the team was direct enough with the ball, when they are the handball skills become a weapon, there’s no need to create anything risky by foot and you allow the talent in the forward line room to move. Most of the time Richmond moved the ball quickly was off the back of a cute disposal. When the likes of Dale, JJ and Richards are looking to run and kick the ball forward, the transition issues the side has had suddenly looks like a strength.

Celebrate the good, endure the bad

Bonty is incredible. By far and away the best I have ever seen in the red white and blue.

Let’s hope we make the right and turn it on for 4 weeks on the trot
I fired a bullet or two on here after last week’s loss then absented myself from the board. Easy to overreact after such a shocking fumble, but we are still a solid side. Can make something of this year.

Feels like the first game for the whole season were we dominated siren to siren (for the most part).

I think I might have even actually relaxed watching the game!
People I was sitting with couldn’t understand why I wasn’t relaxed at 40 points up.

Wow, probably nearly 20 non scores too, considering he goes at about 35%

That’s a crazy amount of shots on goal, a league average 55% has him sitting at 45+ in his 3rd year, with 3 games to go (against 2 of the bottom 3 teams too)
Hopefully the club gives him a nice contract extension soon

2 KPD is all we need and all we have ever needed. I will take the extra run from having all of Dale JJ Richards and VDM over the possible 2 goals a s**t resting ruck or 3rd tall might get in a contested mark against Richards

Ball movement was sublime because of this and we even managed to get out owm entries where our forwards had the outnumber

Personally I'd still have Keath in the mix to take the resting rucks and power forwards. Allows Jones to peel off a lot more and intercept, and until O'Donnell puts on 8-10kgs he's more like a tall flanker imo.

JOD is going to make some mistakes, but surely he is already ahead of Gardner. Keen to see where he’s at after another pre season. Very composed player.
He’s a work in progress and I’m sure he’ll make some howlers as he grows but he’s very good with the ball in hand and can take a nice grab. Really hope he becomes a very long term player.

JUH has Kicked 31.33 for the year he will be a serious player in a few years
And quite a few no scores as well.

I think he's 6th or 7th for total shot attempts for any player in the league. A bit of a misleading stat but a factual one nonetheless. If he keeps this rate of improvement up he could be top 5 for goals next year and people will act like it's unexpected or unforeseen, when it really isn't.

Better user of the ball, better composure, better below his knees. Far higher ceiling. Just has no idea how to control his body or position himself yet.

Most impressive part of his game tonight was his kicking inside 50.
Probably our best field kick other than Bontempelli.

The goal kicking continues to frustrate me. Not sure how he cant kick 40m set shots. But alas his improvement is significant and we have a star on our hands.

Obviously didn't get tested what so ever tonight and did what was needed.

I've been critical of Poulters role in the team. Not his output but playing an important role on the wing which might be better suited to others. Thought he was great tonight and seems to really suit our forwards by looking to kick long to them as his first instinct. I'm not saying to drop him at all but I'd be very interested to see if he starts to dominate VFL with the confidence he now has. Hopefully he won't get that chance and stays in the 1's

I would have loved Bev to put Smith and maybe a bit of West in the centre throughout the last qtr. Just to prepare some plan b options for finals and give them a bit of confidence.

I ❤️ L.Jizz

Have to admit when our first goal came from a Caleb Daniel 1 on 1 inside 50 as our key forward I thought Bevo mightve reached enlightenment however our actual key forwards turned the game around.

Good win but my god that ****** jumper, it is without question the worst jumper we have ever worn at any level. Once every 30 years is more than enough.
I don’t mind it honestly. The red V at the top is pretty shit but otherwise I love the old Dogs logo. And it’s a refreshing bit a colour and creativity that we don’t see as much of these days

I thought we used space better and spread well tonight. Not just crabbing up the boundary line.

There often seemed to be options on the fat side. That hasn't always been the case.

Happy for it to be worn once a decade but I feel people just like retro jumpers because it's different but there is a reason why we didn't adopt the Diamond Dog full back in the 90s and I think it's pretty obvious why and if that was to become our home jumper there would be serious backlash.

As a club we've won 14 first-class premierships across our men's and women's programs with 11 of those 14 being won in the hoops with the remaining 3 in an early VFA jumper with a red white and blue sash.
