I wouldn’t mind giving Toby an extended run at being our pure defensive forward. I’m not sure if that was the plan last night given that Whitfield went off early. We need to give him a role on a dangerous playmaker in the defensive half and not base his game on touches or goals.

I think we should send him to Jake Lloyd next week to shut him down. It’s not really Bevo’s style though.

Bailey Smith gets me excited. He is a gun.

Tim English showed some good signs tonight, the goalkicking being the exception.
That was a definite flaw last night but showed some good signs of progress with his rucking technique.
He just needs to keep working at his core strength to take the next step.

Dale did well late in defence to stand up in a tackle and get a handball away. Is not soft, needs to get confidence and apply himself all game. Kicking into the mark was a shocker though!
Could of buried the game right then! Does make us park footballers feel a bit better about some of our past stuff ups. Especially when a highly paid pro fluffs an absolute gimme

Great team win and a step in the right direction. Still about 50-60% of what this team can be.

Pros:
Defensive pressure and defensive work rate
Libba and Toby were great
Tim and Keath in defense ensuring every high ball was dealt with
Three amigos (bont dunks and macrae) dominant
Baz explosion from stoppages and calmness with the ball - will be the best mid in the comp by 2023.
Caleb was brilliant with ball in hand should quiet a few doubters here

Cons
Lloyd and Dale quiet. I like both players but they are very similar. I think we can only carry one of them moving forward and need to bring in a West or caverra type.

Ball use inside 50 and goal kicking. This comes from generating confidence which this win gives us.

Bruce was quiet but il give him a benefit of the doubt as Wayne Carey couldn't have got a kick either in our forward line with the delivery coming in.

I’ll eat some crow re. English, he had a good third quarter and was a bit better in the ruck. He had two abysmal set shots though and wasn’t up against an amazing ruck so we’ll see.

Great performance from the boys except for poor goal kicking - what’s new, apparently it’s not important to practice literally the only skill that determines whether or not you score.

Bailey update:

Smith - gun.
Williams - I’ve always liked, might have a future.
Dale - Worrying form, needs a bit more....
I honestly think the club needs to have the guys do some work with a Sports Psychologist. Not sure that it's an actual technique problem but more between the ears as they weren't difficult shots for the most part. Feel like they were feeling referred pressure to kick it and that affected their technique

Did anyone else notice that there weren't even enough actual GWS fans to fill the nine segments of the "fan wall" that came up on the TV sometimes. They had to put a still photo of a GWS player into the bottom right box to make up the numbers.

Great win by the guys and Bailey Smith looks to be our next player to move into "elite" territory. Some extremely wise poster said last week that Libba was a must inclusion and Libba didn't let anyone down. I thought Richard's showed some improvement too. It's early days with Vandermeer but I hope he continues to get chances.
Many posters have mentioned Jong as having a good game. During the match I was frustrated at his skill level and propensity to loose his feet. Maybe I need to watch the replay in a less agitated state.
Also I hope the Channel 7 Director of Camerawork recovers from Covid and gets back on the job soon. The number of key plays missed was laughable but these are difficult times for lots of folks.
Well done Dogs.

I did but wondered if the household put up the photo and buggered off. Also noticed a whole family on their phones ignoring the game and not realising they were on air lol

I noticed that too. It’s a bit embarrassing for them. They should’ve had one of the injured players in there filling the space. Not that still of Cameron.
Speaking of Cameron he was no where last night. Completely missing. Good times.

I don't know what the coach did that changed things - maybe he placed more value on maintaining the structure in defense. I don't really know MD. I just know that when they had the ball, we looked very different from the way we did last week.
Our tackle intensity was off the charts we were actually making them stick. Not just swinging off them so that they could still release the ball, we were often making the ball spill free in the tackle.
And that level of intensity had the Plastics spooked hence Shaw's handball to Richards for a goal

How good was Vandermeer's sidestep? Phwoar.

It's so good to see a genuine rivalry in the AFL again. It adds so much to the game when you know both teams genuinely hate each other. It makes the stakes feel so much higher. I don't remember ever having so much anxiety in the first quarter of a home and away match. I wanted Libba to kick that goal at three quarter time as much as I wanted Macrae to kick the match winner in 2016.

At what point do we think GWS move on from the Bontempelli-Haynes incident?

Obviously the raking of his eyes during last year's final wasn't enough and it required at least a 2nd effort, perhaps Nick Haynes to captain the Giants every time they play the Dogs until both players retire?
Haynes attending the coin toss ranks alongside Adelaide’s power stance. MiNd GaMeS.

English owned the air in their forward line.

McLean was outstanding.

Libba's stoppage work was insane for someone who hasn't played for so long.

Keath was incredible.

Bailey Smith is ridiculous.

Richards finally starting to look like the player we have all been hoping he would become.

Great first win in Bont's captaincy. Will do wonders for his confidence and his team mates faith in him. Long may he reign.
Bonts goal when we needed to steady the ship showed real heart and leadership when it was all on the line IMO
