Why is Don Pyke a spud?

So Pyke said this was his wifes idea on 360 tonight. Coaching group had already been planned, then she suggested the entire group. Wow, takes a wife to see this might be a good idea.
Can Pyke's wife take over from some of our assistants on game day as she at least has observation skills...

If he's actually on 1.5 million then not having good assistants isn't an excuse anymore.
That's a lot of pizza & beer!

I doubt he is on near that money.

Lost the players is funny.

He's backed them to the hilt.

These lazy pricks need a kick up the arse.

My main gripe is selection and our assistants.
Yeah i don't believe he's lost the players.

Well he should lose a few of them at seasons end along with some assistants

I thought he (pyke for the guy who complained earlier) was loaded. Surely he would have been smart enough to share the cap around around to get quality around him.
Maybe that’s why he’s loaded? Doesn’t think of others? But in all honesty, we have problems getting quality (players and coaches) to come to us. Maybe to get a quality coach like Pyke, we had to pay big $$$$ for him?

We got Walsh, and we got Pyke, both our quality.

Port don’t have trouble attracting quality players, and arguably coaches, our problems are the terrible culture and management approach.

We don’t not prioritize footballing success - why would you come here if you did?

Even the Gibbs thing / that will be another red flag to potential recruits.

I remember when the Nigel Smart walking over hot coals thing happened, it was somewhat controversial then but if that happened now (in today's Uber-offended environment) the club would probably be shut down by the AFL. The pizza and beers thing is a good idea in theory but it makes me wonder if this is the first time (in a long time) that the coaches and playing group have got together in a casual environment

If the club wants to 'make it fun' they need to install a system of discipline that makes everyone realise how fun it is when we win

That’s a fair comment, we might struggle to get quality to come to Adelaide. But that doesn’t mean we pay hacks primo rates. Our group is absolute bargain basement, meaning we should have bucketloads available in our footy cap.

("AFL 2019: It would cost over $3m for Adelaide to sack Don Pyke but all bets are off for veterans in list overhaul".) Fox Sports

Surely Pyke is not on 1.5 million per year? FMD if that is correct.
He is not on that amount.

But sacking a coach with two years to go on his contract would put a club, every club, over the Soft Cap and thus pay the tax.

The tax is 100%.

So a salary around $750k would run out to about $3m in paying him out plus the tax. Then you also need to consider the costs of recruiting a new coach and paying him.

This is why few.coaches are sacked now before their final year.

When we sacked Sando the Soft Cap and the Tax didnt exist.

We’re a non profit - the unspent money has little value in the bank.

To be fair, it does come in handy when you want to build a new training and Admin hub. I think it’s ok for the club to not want to be in the position of having their banker call in their major loan again. The question is how could we not have available cash in our soft cap? I would suggest that it comes back to our public service culture. The hobo that looks suspiciously like Ben Hart would be earning the same that Teague did as they were employed in the same role. This is our major problem and it would be very easy to fix. Get in a footy operations consultant who actually has experience and an understanding of what certain levels of quality demand in terms of remuneration in their roles. Burton, as footy ops is worth about $150k, Hart forwards about $80k, Harper managing the team that books flights and buses about $80k. I can near guarantee that we’d save over $500k right there and each of those people would last longer than 12 months with us on those wages as they sought higher paying work elsewhere. Burton would barely get a job as a fitness assistant given his career record with Brisbane and us in that area.

The pizza and beers thing would do nothing. When your problems are with your bosses, being forced to enjoy their company in your own time as if it’s some meaningful act would do more damage than good. It’s a brain fart by someone in marketing, stupidly implemented by footy ops, to calm the masses into thinking everything is in hand, we’re a happy group all working feverishly together towards a common goal.

No you don’t, the costs of the new coach is already taken into account, except for any amounts he earns above Pyke, plus the tax. The first $750k, Pyke’s salary, is already factored in the cap, so there’s no tax on that. The numbers quoted are shifting all of Pyke’s salary above the cap and adding 100% tax. That leaves the $750k available to pay Campo, I mean, Pyke’s replacement.

Yep as someone who has had issues with management at companies and then forced to do work dinners with them.. it's the furthest thing from recreation.

The antagonism between them and I did get even higher when I submitted that as overtime as well lol.

I have no problem with Pyke having the players around like that. It shows unity in the face of adversity. What I do have issue with is the stark contrast between ports ceo and chairman responses to their issues, compared to ours. Now no one believes that it’s all Thomas’s fault but at least he’s the balls to talk about the issues and support the coach , and Koch has made it clear that they will have a full independent review at the end of year if they miss finals. Fagan, Chapman , where the hell are you?

There’s a stark difference between an administration that does want to get better and strives for premiership even if they continually **** up along the way and an administration who cannot fathom what is wrong with a seemingly loud group of fans when the club is in the 8 and a good chance to play a final.

Why throw Harper into the mix. He’s doing a ****ing good job.
