All good mate. I hope I don't run into any crocs as last time one almost lunged at me, I could have ended up like a one legged pirate

Could match your one eye.😁

I’m about to join the ranks of the self-funded retirees too. But my main pursuits will be seeing more of my grandchildren (in Sydney) and undertaking historical research into some of my favourite things. One of which is the Collingwood Football Club.

After which I will annoy the hell out of you lot, with my enhanced knowledge of all things Pies.😍

I also get to have my grandson every tuesday and thursday while his parents work and it has been the best time I have spent anywhere

Isn’t everyone who retires on superannuation self funded?

That’s most people these days.

Seems an impressive feat.
It can be but not many get to retire at 58, it's not the fact that it's impressive that counts, it's the work and investments you chose throughout life. There aren't that many people of my age group who even knew to put extra money into super for the future. The whole point of the arguement is that if you are prepared to work for you and your families future it can be attainable

Hi there Vicky Park - I'm closing in on the big retirement day too, so I'll be tracking your progress with intent. Realistically, working now more for the benefit of my children's inheritance than my retirement - big unknown is travel - my partner has a place in Bosnia Herzegovina - she hasn't been there for 26 years, so if that's going to be our winter residence then I might need to extend my retirement date! I don't like long haul flights, but we're heading over there later this year to check it out.

Yours sounds good too! Wish you all the best.

It's the fishing charters that attract me. I also have a few Barramundi expeditions in mind
Have a great time mate. Fishing is one of life's pleasures.
Also good to hear you're spending time with your grandchild.

Haven't heard from KJPie in awhile.
Hoping all is well with him.

Do you introduce yourself as a self-funded retiree?

If you need to have a little dig, could you at least follow the the post as to why I mentioned it. It's not about prestige, it's about James Bond pigeon holing me as a right wing yobbo. You just can't help yourself can you unethical ex lawyer, or so you claim but you must have had a boring job because as a lawyer one would think that hanging around bigfooty all day, would be last thing an ex lawyer would do.;)
;)

Just so you know, calling yourself a self-funded retiree sounds a bit silly, even gauche. In this great country of ours Wayne Kerr comes to mind.

As for me being unethical, well maybe. There’s just so much gray in the world these days.

Not just 'can be', it 'absolutely is' attainable. Unfortunately, not many people truly understand the concept of compound interest and delayed gratification, which I suspect is the intention of the 'system'. Regular contributions to Super (or other retirement account), even small contributions, make a huge difference at the end of the line. It is easy to do. Unfortunately for most, what is even easier is not doing it!

I always avoided Superannuation and put in only the required amount when I had to.
Invested mainly in property and Australian shares.
Property I did very well, shares lost most of it because I invested in penny stocks. If only I had bought blue chip stocks.
Retired now and my wife runs a business across the street. I look after our 4 year old girl. In kindergarten now which makes it a little easier.

My sister has a couple of million in Super. Bloody council worker 🙄

Can only echo these sentiments, it's been a harrowing two days culminating in Mrs OA, needing surgery but all's good as of an hr ago.
Hope all is okay now OB.

sorry to interrupt wipey.... I was just wondering because I might at some stage be living just on super.....without getting a pension. I was hoping to find a non-silly term that I can tell other people...

I know your statement is tongue-in-cheek (hard to find one of yours that isn't :) ) but clarifying you're retired is all that should be required.

People might ask if you still work or not but who gives a sh*t if it's self funded?

I'd consider that line of questioning nosey and inappropriate. It's nobody's business how your retirement might be funded unless it is a source of accomplishment for you. Then it becomes something you can declare with pride.

I've been "retired" a good while now...but still managing to crank out 20 or 30 boards a year. What can I say....its in my blood.
Difference is I guess, having sold the business I just get to make boards for the people I WANT to make them for now.

Surfing and fishing and travelling are the priorities now, kids and grandkids can look after themselves (and they do...swiping my boards whenever they want to!!!)

well i'd like to tell the world that i'm independently wealthy in case the babes are interested and are able to ignore my decomposing body....

but I was more interested in finding out the alternative to saying self-funded, unless wipey was making the point that one should not refer to from whence the money is coming. And I must say that I liked your suggestion that referring to one's retirement is all that should be required - probably reflecting wipey's point of view. In contrast, I'm the type of person to want to rub the little money that I have in everyone's noses. After all, isn't that what life is all about? But I'm grateful for your reply and your suggestions about the etiquette of retirement.

As an aside, I saw a reference on the murdoch clickbate site that referred to a 84 year old couple who had a million bucks and wanted to do something to enable themselves to get the pension. The hordes in twitterdom got out their 45's. I thought that it was a reasonable query, especially if the bloke worked for 50 or more years. I suppose it would have been better if he jad burnt all money in life on drugs and piss and then went straight on the pension. Far more acceptable.

That was good for me. I'll move on

I see it a little different. Spending all your money on drugs and alcohol is investing in the wider economy. It is called money circulation. Therefore im looking for a return on my investment, I thankyou for contributing to my old age pension one day.

Sorry, I've been busy packing for my 2 weeks in Cairns which I leave later today. One of the perks of working hard all my life. If only you could be half the person Fat Jesus is. Fat Jesus is a down to earth good bloke who just likes to chat on here and give his own thoughts to topics that interest him. I only wish you could take a leaf out his book.
Thank you Manic for your kind words. JB and you must stay friends. We are Collingwood!

Just on that. I saw that same link.

This is moving the topic further. We are now so far from where the convo started that it's no longer in the same timezone... but anyway.

I saw the responses of the triggered people but was conflicted.

I recognise that for many, having a paid off home and close to a mil in investments is unattainable but relatively speaking, it's not a lot of money.

They are in the in-between stage where the sum they have accumulated is not enough to sustain them indefinitely and they are too old to invest it for further growth.

This was just as good for me. If I was a smoker, I'd have lit one up.

Certainly. It was my duty as a responsible person and I hope you have enough with the pension to continue with the drugs and alcohol. Of course, I'll take every opportunity to proudly state that I'm a self-funded retiree and not one of the lowlife bludgers like your good self....

It is interesting that one seems to go through a transition stage..... with no money, it is your right to get the pension. If you have as much as that couple, you are money-hungry drainers of the public purse and then when you get into the multi-millionaire stage, it's your duty to fleece the public purse.

Money, doesnt buy class or taste

Money, doesnt buy class or taste

I wonder who said that first....somone who had money and wanted to keep the rest of the masses in their place..... or someone who had tried to make money but failed miserably..

I think you only have to look around to realise that class or taste is basically worthless in our society..
