I don't see it as "pleading" or "begging" for help.

There's a mechanism available for poorly performed teams to make a case for assistance. We're attempting to make use of that.

Correct.

If the AFL was based on fair rather than on revenue and a sport rather than sports entertainment it probably isn't even a question we would need to ask and more a mechanism that just kicks in. Which, fair play to the AFL, they tried that and clubs immediately abused it.

I know.

I hate priority picks. I always have. I hate how Hawthorn deliberately manipulated them and it played such a big role in their success.

What I hate most is we are now asking for them. Those other teams just got them automatically for less than 5 wins, but we are pleading and being patronised.

I thought I had reconciled with it, but I haven’t.

And in the end, this horrible 4 years has got us four top 2 picks. Not many other clubs have that many in a row.

I feel like I would prefer to say “* you, we’ll get ourselves out of this” than beg for anything more.

Illogical I know.
I 100% hear and feel everything you are saying.

I felt the same when other teams were getting priority picks, we don't need them, we will be successful and win premierships without help and in spite of the teams that have received assistance. But it just isn't the way the AFL works any more.

Over the last four years and to an extent even earlier, it has become so obvious how uneven a playing field we are on. We don't get a fair go in the media, with fixturing, umpire allocation, TV coverage and from the AFL in general.

After 1999, we battled for nearly two decades, in a cycle of trying to avoid totally bottoming out and stuck in the the void of the mid-ladder finishes, occasionally bobbing up for an over-achieving Preliminary Final, but never really in the window to seriously threaten for a flag.

Nearly all of the premiers since our last flag have done it with a leg up of some sort from the AFL. The Lions were a super team from the merger. WC, Hawthorn, Richmond, Melbourne, WB and the Pies all received priority picks that helped to at least some extent. Sydney have their academy and had COLA. Geelong through good luck had the best run of father/sons come through at a time they only cost a third round pick.

It sucks, but it is the current reality of the AFL. For years we have had our picks pushed back and diluted as other teams have taken their turn at the assistance trough. Even the four top two picks of the last four years have not given us the access to the best players. We have two spoons and no number one draft pick on our list. Every draft of those four years, there has been a player in the conversation for the best in the draft, that is already off the table due to F/S, NGA or Academy.

We have brought in some great high end talent, but a lot of high end talent is still going to other clubs. GC were given the world in assistance four years ago and this draft will bring in three top ten picks as academy players. Whatever we receive this year, the reality is GC will be bringing in more top end talent this year than we are. How are we supposed to get more competitive, when even at our lowest ebb, the AFL is still giving more help to a club other than us. Not only that, because GC are getting that help, it is being used as reason for us not to get as much help as we should.

We aren't begging for help, the media and other clubs are painting it that way as it suits the narrative. The rules are in place for assistance to be given. It is the unfortunate reality of the way the AFL is set up. We have been disadvantaged by nearly all of the rest of the AFL receiving it for years. We should be receiving it and in all likelihood, should be receiving more than we will end up getting!

Bigfooty draft board seem to think GC want some F1's as part of pick 4 package.

This could be why?
I think this is on the money.

Assistance of pick 11 + F1 traded to GCS for pick 4 (5 after McKay compo). Draft Sanders with pick 4 (5).

It's a convoluted way of giving us Sanders without giving us Sanders.

WTF we willing to trade our pick 11 AND probably pick 2 next year for Sanders…

Better off just to take McKercher at 2 and Sanders at the MaGoo compo pick use 14 and (if we get PP at 11) someone else.

Then we still have F1 next year that really could be 1 or 2 again, we aren’t rising up past most teams next year.

Pick 11 is huge. Now they've run with that, will be tough to receive anything less.

Pick 11 & end of F1 gives North the ability to trade hard for Reid or GC 4.

Or simply hit the draft with 2,3,11,14 which becomes 2,3, 14,19

2 of Curtain, Mckercher, Watson
2 of Murphy,Wilson, Freijah, Shoenmakers, Edwards, Green,

He's talking about PP end of first round next year, so pick 19, going out to 21-22

It's brilliant. If that's what is offered we take it. It also STOPS others from getting the gc pick as well in a way

Mind you it’s becoming more like convoluted draft tampering orchestrated by the AFL..
To be honest I actually like it.

As much as we moan in here the fact is lions we're putrid for a bit, players leaving everywhere, got pp19 and now they're playing off for a GF

Gold Coast yes got a sleuth of picks and are still reaping benefits.... they're also the second newest that matter how you look at it are a categorical failure since their inception. Even mores when compared to GWS. GC got it all wrong when they came in, their assistance is not equivalent to ours.

The next assistance is almost 20 year ago. Yes it's still reverberating for teams, such as pendlebury playing this weekend, but EVERYONE could see that assistance was not only too much but really did eat at the fabric of the game.

Pick 11 and a future end of first? Maybe even some change to bring in bodies for next year? Probably the model to expect.
