The problem with a trade like this is that it has to benefit all 3 partners, but nobody wants to come out behind. You've managed to balance this trade pretty well, but there is a way simpler solution without all this wheeling and dealing.

Crows trade up to #4 in exchange for #8 and #16. Saints all too happy.

Crows trade up to #2 in exchange for #4, #13 and #21 and get #24 and #29 in return.

You're slightly worse off this year, but much better off next year and still get your guy.
Question is though, can you trade for a pick on the night before that pick.

doing it as a 3 way at GC pick sounds like it would be allowed.
but can we lets say before pick 1 announce that we have done a deal for pick 4, then at pick 2 use our new currency to trade for 2?

So Cal Twomey's draft has us taking 4 Victorians and bidding on 5 others and not a Croweater in sight.

Does anyone else find this unusual?
I read that. It looked like we lost a pick there somewhere as well. I'm sure Hamish won't bend over like that. I think that was just Victorian bias.

Given weve been one of the clubs who used their first rounders at all times I dont think they'll mind if we dont have one next year.

We will still have 2 first rounders in the event of a trade anyway.
It’s pretty irrelevant anyway. Either the rumour of a trade is crap, in which case it doesn’t matter, or it’s true, in which case the clubs would already have got dispensation.

Its the opposite and quite possible to happen. Ultimately we are going to look at the best available player regardless of state. Fogarty fell into our laps last year.

That said, clubs feed these guys stories. Cal rates the talent on how he sees them, he was very wrong about us last year.

He doesnt see a successful pick swap in the first round either, nor even an attempt at one.

I'd say you're spot on, the rumour is crap

If the rumours are correct and we trade up for Lukosius I am not sure I 100% agree but the club is really in a no win position on this one. If we dont and Lukosius turns into a Pavlich type star, sooky fans and media will bag the crows for the next 15 years. If we do trade up, I will bet even if Lukosius is a star for us, sooky fans and media will still complain if pick 8 and 13 are stars and we will hear about that shit for the next 15 years. God help us if Lukosius just turns into a Sam Day or Tom Boyd type.

Overall on this one, I think I am willing to sit on the fence. Either decision really isnt a wrong decision.

Personally I think this is a leak from the Crows to 5aa to put an end to people saying the Crows should trade up to get Luko. If you are Crows management and know you aren’t going to get him then it makes sense to put out a ridiculous rumour so people start to say “don’t sell the farm” as has been the reaction here and then go to the draft with the picks they have without a massive backlash.
I’m interested. As a GC supporter would you be keen to see the rumoured trade happen?

One scenario keeps going through my head is if we don’t trade up we might make a trade with GWS for 9 and 11 for 8 and 13. Just to push up to get Jones or RCD with our second pick. Just a thought

They might want the same players we do, so I doubt they do that

Iva Bigun how many spots on your list do you have?

If you had 3,6,8 and 13 would you need 24?

If Caro is right and you have knocked back 6&24 for 4, it could be because you’ve already committed 24? Something like:

Crows out 8,13 and next years first, maybe in range of 10-16.
Crows in 2 and 24.

Effectively pick 2 for 8,13 & a decent pick upgrade. Plus you owe us for that needless 4th rd pick swap that got you Hombsch.
There is some debate about this on our board as to whether it’s 5 or 6, I believe it’s 6

Three first rounders for a proven star, top 10 in the competition calibre of player? Sure.

Three first rounders for an 18 year old yet to play a single game? Absolutely insane.

Fortunately Ogilvie seems a fairly pragmatic and sensible recruiter, so I doubt there's any chance of a deal like this happening.

Who was the doofus who first coined this idiocy about prices for unproven 18 year old?

It’s become common place to repeat even though it’s incredibly dumb

If the prize is unproven so is the ****ing currency!!

The only thing more stupid is the bundling all first rounders together as if they have the same value

Would prefer Caldwell and RCD for mine.

It is the kind of godfather deal that would be required to get one of those picks

To answer your question if you are going after Rankine then yes I would do that deal, however if you are after Luko I’m less likely, it’s a great deal but I’m not sure you give up a chance at a tall running forward with great kicking skills

Yes and no. I think we had an eye towards the SA talent in this draft and wanted to give ourselves the best chance to tap into this, however were never going to be irresponsible in trading the picks we had to get such talent.

Unfortunately the way the cards have fallen, the 3 top SA guys will be gone top 5, leaving us with Hately, Valente and McLennan. At most, we'd probably only want 1 of Hately and Valente, with both likely struggle for games if we have have a fit midfield and McLennan filling a role we're reasonably stocked in.

The clear value/up side at our picks looks like it will be in drafting primarily Victorians.
I think we will make a "final" attempt to trade into top 3 tomorrow night to get one of the SA lads. If that is not successful we will stay true to our talent order and picks some great kids. I would not be surprised if we end up trading 21 for a future first and just go with 3 picks this year. If we trade up then I don't think we will trade out 21 for a future 1st as we would want 3 early picks from a quality draft.
