No. I think people have added 2+2 incorrectly in the first place assuming that what we have done to get to this draft position was simply to take the SA players on offer.

16 - we got a great deal for Lever pure and simple
13 - Gov became a bad apple. We made the best of the situation and moved quickly to get 13 off of Sydney.
8 - We got Burtoned
21 - We got fisted by Carlton in the Gibbs trade and that was the best we could get back

We didn’t plan this years in advance. Sure we would have done a reasonable deal to get one of those SA players at the top, but it takes another reasonable party to get a deal done.

Otherwise we were always going to stick to what we have always done. Stay true to our draft order giving preference to local players when it’s line ball.

Yes and no. I think we had an eye towards the SA talent in this draft and wanted to give ourselves the best chance to tap into this, however were never going to be irresponsible in trading the picks we had to get such talent.

Unfortunately the way the cards have fallen, the 3 top SA guys will be gone top 5, leaving us with Hately, Valente and McLennan. At most, we'd probably only want 1 of Hately and Valente, with both likely struggle for games if we have have a fit midfield and McLennan filling a role we're reasonably stocked in.

The clear value/up side at our picks looks like it will be in drafting primarily Victorians.

The AFL official in charge of the draft, I didn’t catch his name.

Rowie asked specifically if the AFC could trade next years first rounder and he said no. Dumb and dumber didn’t ask whether we could trade next years first rounder if we get a 3rd and 4th rounder back.
I remember reading somewhere (probably this thread) that each club could ask for dispensation. If so I’m sure the AFL would grant this in our case as our jostling for that Rankine/Lucosius pick will be just what their new fangled format needs.

It may be true. But what exactly supports this. I know people say it a lot. But what is the evidence?

Is there anything we would have done differently with the Lever or Gibbs trades? Would we have done anything differently with Gov? I just don’t see anything at all that supports this.

Can the Crows be involved in a 3-way trade before pick 2 is called out?

Crows
Gain: 2, 24, Suns Future 3rd, Saints Future 4th
Lose: 8, 13, 21, Future 1st
Have picks 2, 16, 24, 73 for the draft.

Suns
Gain: 4, 8, 13, Crows Future 1st
Lose: 2, 6, 24, Future 3rd
Have picks 3, 4, 8, 13, 29 for the draft.

Saints
Gain: 6, 21
Lose: 4, Future 4th
Have picks 6, 21, 36, 46, 67 for the draft.
Cannot imagine the clubs being able to facilitate such a complicated trade within the time span provided for live pick trading.

Rowey saying on 5aa that the word is getting stronger and stronger that Gold Coast and Adelaide will do a trade of drat picks on Thursday.

Gold Coast give us pick 2 we use for Lukosius

Adelaide give picks 8, 13 and 2019 first round draft pick.

It just seems too much for me. What do you think?

I’d do that.

13 seems a bit light to me to upgrade 8 to 2. So we need to add more

Our first next year, in a draft less interesting to us will hopefully be around 16.

So yeah, I’m doing that deal.

And I’m not doing it for pick 3. I would my first choice not second choice out of Luko and Rankine.

Plus still leaves us with a decent pair of picks this year

Three first rounders for a proven star, top 10 in the competition calibre of player? Sure.

Three first rounders for an 18 year old yet to play a single game? Absolutely insane.

Fortunately Ogilvie seems a fairly pragmatic and sensible recruiter, so I doubt there's any chance of a deal like this happening.

I have a feeling we'll end up with Ben King, RCD, Valente and Sturt...or at least half of those. Also Hately a very good shot (this is of course if we keep our 4 earlier picks).

I honestly don't like the idea of selling the farm for Luko or Rankine....especially given if Rankine goes interstate that he will come home in under 5 years...we get him them

The King of the Draft clarified on 5aa today that a team has to have all other picks for next years draft if they want to trade next years first rounder tomorrow night. He said 8 teams were unable to trade next years draft pick tomorrow night, which included us.

You would think we could trade say 8 + 16 + next years first rounder if we get back a second and third rounder for next year.

Unfortunately the VFL make this shit up so I expect that if we look like we are anywhere near Luko or Izak it will be “No Deal”
Yet other clubs have been given an exception to that rule....well other Vict clubs that is. How can the AFL change the rules each year. You would havethought they set a precedence and then back away from it. They have no idea about gaining credibility.

“If I’m Gold Coast or Adelaide, I’d probably take ‘Luko’ [Jack Lukosius] or Izak (Rankine) one.

“There’s not a lot in it, they’re all terrific players and they bring different things. Obviously, Jack being the taller can play at both ends. I actually really like him as a defender, Izak’s got the X-factor and Sam Walsh is just rock solid.

“Whoever gets those players, and hopefully we get in a position to get one of them, they’ll be very pleased.”

Ham ain't the type to make such a comment if he wasn't confident he'll get one.

Maybe he's basically saying hopefully we will get Izak when he drops to 8 because he's (Izak's) warned everyone else off (and hopefully no one's so dumb as to still draft him because he'll be with us in two years anyway)?

I don’t see the Crows trading 3 picks for 1 player as “selling the farm”. That term has been thrown around a lot by the opponents of any pickswap. I see it more as a “mortgage” on the farm!

So we get to keep the damn thing and still get ourselves a nice piece of farm equipment to help pay back the bank. In this case it would be the latest 21st century combine harvester with all the bells and whistles that would make your neighbours jealous and have the locals all excited.

Farmers do this all the time. What’s the big deal?

Geelong got permission

It’s not even that.some X factor players are needed to win a flag. If Hamish has calculated that it’s worth it then I’m fully behind it. Bold trading is needed sometimes.

Suns are missing their 2nd and 4th round picks next year. Unless they're willing to give us Brisbane's 1st rounder (which would likely be a downgrade for them) it seems it's an impossible trade unless the AFL sign off on breaking their rules.
Personally I think this is a leak from the Crows to 5aa to put an end to people saying the Crows should trade up to get Luko. If you are Crows management and know you aren’t going to get him then it makes sense to put out a ridiculous rumour so people start to say “don’t sell the farm” as has been the reaction here and then go to the draft with the picks they have without a massive backlash.

Well, according to Afl rules it can’t happen. But Afl rules aren’t really worth the paper they’re written on so you never know
Given weve been one of the clubs who used their first rounders at all times I dont think they'll mind if we dont have one next year.

We will still have 2 first rounders in the event of a trade anyway.

Loking back at the drafts with the number of 1st rd failures, it’s hghly likely that one of our 1st could be a bust, so giving one of them up for Luko/Rankine may not be as bad as first thought. Unless of course it’s Luko/Rankine who is the bust.

Suns can just give us Brisbane's first rounder next year which they already have. you are allowed to swap picks in the same round with another team without bothering with the you need a third rounder cos you've given it away already etc
Why would the Suns give up pick 2 or 3 this year and a probable top 5 pick next year for you to get a player you desperately want and then accept 8 , 16 and probably a pick around 13 next year. That is a terrible trade for us

Twomey has Port selecting 1 from SA
he has been consistent in his comments that he believes neither club will be seduced by local talent and stay true to their draft board, in particular port given they have moved so high they will want the best talent they can get

Its actually not as bad as it first read, but it wont be a top 5.... itll be pick 1.
