Would it be fair to say that the draft basically is the "small" final piece that concludes the entire 2018 season?

Footy probably takes a massive back seat till January.
Let’s hope the draft doesn’t go the way the rest of 2018 has.

Rowey saying on 5aa that the word is getting stronger and stronger that Gold Coast and Adelaide will do a trade of drat picks on Thursday.

Gold Coast give us pick 2 we use for Lukosius

Adelaide give picks 8, 13 and 2019 first round draft pick.

It just seems too much for me. What do you think?

Has any established player been traded for that much ? Judd? 3 picks us ridiculous.

Just look at the blue chip talent that moved clubs over summer. At most it was two 1sts of value that was sought after.

Picks 8 and 13 for 3 is fair market value.

Let's not forget Francou quit us wanting to work with Dew at Gold Coast.
We enforce the non compete clause in his contract to disallow him leaving us for another Assistant Coach role.
It is then said Francou will teach next year.
Trade Week we have discussions with Gold Coast. Francou is now an Assistant Coach at Gold Coast.

I wonder what agreement was put in place to allow this to happen......

This isn’t correct.

According to AFL rules, we’d simply need to receive 2019 3rd and 4th rounders back in the deal (ie the same rounds that we’ve already traded out of next year) and then it absolutely can happen.
Lucky the rule is in place to preserve those highly coveted picks.

Given the way we freely chuck our first rounders around, combined with mediocre drafting, Im not sure we'd recover if the pick swap was a bust.

Definitely M King or B Smith.

I’d argue both to make it 5.
Yes, IMO you can add Smith to that group of 4 .....looking like he goes to Bulldogs though

Meanwhile Hawthorn haven't had a first round pick since 2015, when they used two first rounders, neither of which are still on their list. But they're in Gill's back pocket so it's okay. :rolleyes:

Pretty funny seeing Port supporters all discussing how they want Port to draft Jye Caldwell.

Prior to him linked with the Crows, there was little to no mention of him on the Port board. Suddenly once they hear we're interested in him they all now want Port to take him.

My guess of our picks

8 = Jones / King
13 = Hately (think he will slide)
16 = McLennan
21 = Sparrow

Really hoping king slides, i have a feeling unless gold coast take both kings then he will

Three first rounders for a proven star, top 10 in the competition calibre of player? Sure.

Three first rounders for an 18 year old yet to play a single game? Absolutely insane.

Fortunately Ogilvie seems a fairly pragmatic and sensible recruiter, so I doubt there's any chance of a deal like this happening.

Luko/Rankine is going to cost us two first rounders in two years if we can get them to come back, unless something goes horribly wrong. After all a player is worth more by virtue of being young then on performance.

There is also potentially less risk in paying three firsts now then two in the future. That'd take us out of the first round of 1 draft, whereas 2 firsts in 2020 potentially takes us out of two first rounds. So it doesn't harm list regen as much.

If it got pick 2. I'm comfortable with paying three firsts

Who was the doofus who first coined this idiocy about prices for unproven 18 year old?

It’s become common place to repeat even though it’s incredibly dumb

If the prize is unproven so is the ******* currency!!

The only thing more stupid is the bundling all first rounders together as if they have the same value

I haven't made that assumption at all. There is risk of failure attached to every draft pick, typically increasing as you go down the order, although the Crows have made a habit of bucking that trend over the last decade.

The assumption being made is that 1 player in Lukosius will provide us as much if not more utility than pick 8, pick 13 and our 2019 pick 10-15.

Put another way, to suggest this is a fair and equal trade is to suggest that Lukosius is on average 3 times as likely to succeed as each of the 3 players we would take at 8, 13 and 2019 first respectively.

Personally, I think that's very unlikely to be the case. Factoring in Ogilvie's record in the draft, the odds are approaching zero.

There might be less risk attached to pick 2 than there is to pick 8, 13 or 10-15, but not that much. If one of those 3 becomes an AA / B&F winner, we've lost this trade.

At least by then we'd have more certainty of whether they're a sure thing or not.

I'm definitely with you on this one.

If it did go down that way then we still retain 16-21 which will net 2 fine young mids I'm sure.

I would also assume that we must have something coming back to us, possibly 24 this year. As some have already predicted 21 may get us back into the first round next year anyway.

I don't think it's catastrophic list management as some seem to suggest. There is of course risk attached to paying so much for a single player - however if this is the deal then the club obviously feel it's a risk worth taking.

All this flippant talk of - no worries we'll just get them back in 2 years on the cheap is largely BS given our record.

If we want him that badly and we have the currency to get it done then strike now.

There's actually Carlton fans in the comments saying no, they'd rather Walsh...
did he say if adelaide offered picks 8, 13 16 and THEIR FUTURE for pick 1...then year, it will be their bloody future they are selling. Only way I would even countenance that is if it was 8,13,16 & future 1st for Carlton's pick 1 and 2019 1st round pick which is very very likely to be top 3
