The Smillie comparison to Cripps are so lazy.

He plays nothing like him and never has.

He’s not a contested beast, he plays like a traditional smaller mid that likes to get a lot of ball on the outside and in transition.

The Bont ones have some merit, given Bont likes to get some ball as a second receiver, but again, his footskills, overhead ability and forward craft are totally different.

If you ignore height, he plays like someone like Adam Cerra.

If he was a contested beast, he’d be without a doubt the #1 pick.

As mentioned before, his biggest question marks are whether he can translate his game style to AFL level, given he’s going to be at a disadvantage with speed and agility - OR - can he change his game style and develop into an inside force like a Tom Green or Cripps. He’s not Bont and never will be.

I agree he’s not a beast inside but I think the idea he isn’t decent at the contest is overplayed. The games where he was switched on he often was the dominant inside force.

I think a lot of his value comes from being an extra tall across the ground even if he’s not a super overhead player he’s still 195cm. There’s some Blicavs utility value to him and Richmond aren’t exactly in a hurry to have him find an exact role.
