That's the thing, they already have enough points, they don't need to do more trades to get points. Only need to hunt points if 27 or 34 is traded for futures.

So if they can line up a futures trade for pick 34 before Levi bid then your trade for pick 27 makes sense. But then can they trade back in to a 30's pick to get a player?
there are 3 vanishing picks btw 43 and 52. So will pies be willing to trade 55 to move 5 spots up from 52? Maybe they will.

Maybe more vanishing picks - I think Cats will trade up - killing off 45, etc.. I suspect the late deal we did with Brisbane was part 1 of this deal. - A few picks between our 55 and 60 will disappear so we won't be trading down our second pick much to move our first pick up a bit.

I think it's good Richmond are handing out so many of their famous numbers (assumption based on who's going to the draft).

I don't think it puts pressure on anyone. Easy to live in the past when you have had as much recent success as Richmond. Shows they are moving forward and aren't afraid to give responsibility to the next gen. I don't think putting those numbers on ice and reviling them until someone proves themself "worthy" would be right approach. Lalor as suited to donning the number 4 as anyone.

Apparently Dusty,Cotchin,Rewoldt,Grimes & Astbury are presenting the jumpers to the Tigers draftees tonight so maybe we are only uses 5 picks
If you've got Dusty to come why not wow all the kids with Dusty handing over the jumper. Poor kid that gets Astbury.

Are you sure?

Clubs always seem to trade out their picks if someone is anticipated to go close to their pick. Eg. Kako and Lombard. Has made me think that trading out after a bid isn't possible.

It is possible but it does dilute your negotiating power. Most clubs like to trade out in advance. This has the added bonus of removing the incentive for people to bid on your player prior to your pick.

Not sure about the added bonus. Nothing is really gained from bidding earlier - unless you're the club trading with them. Eg. if Essendon had've lost from trading a pick into the future cheaper due to a bid - another competing club would have gained from getting that pick cheaper. Or more likely as it's turned out in this draft they would have had a ripping deal lined up beforehand as a contingency.

Once a bid is made the matching team can’t trade their next available pick, although they can trade any subsequent or future picks.

E.g. in the 2022 draft Sydney bid on Harry Rowston at pick 16, forcing GWS to match with pick 17, their next available pick. Before placing the bid, Sydney had tried to leverage the rule to get GWS to trade for their pick 16.
That's not right. You can trade out after a bid is made and before matching. In the case you mentioned GWS matched with the next pick rather than trade it because they had two other picks shortly afterwards as well. They were better off matching the bid with the next pick and using the other two on players than trading out all three picks.

Asked Chat GPT to predict the top 10 of tonight’s draft

As the 2024 AFL Draft approaches tonight, the top 10 selections are anticipated to be:

1. Richmond Tigers: Expected to select Sam Lalor, a powerful midfielder-forward from the GWV Rebels. Lalor has been likened to Dustin Martin for his strength and goal-scoring ability.

2. North Melbourne Kangaroos: Likely to choose Josh Smillie, a versatile 194cm midfielder from the Eastern Ranges. Smillie has drawn comparisons to Patrick Cripps for his stoppage craft and athleticism.

3. Carlton Blues: Projected to pick Finn O’Sullivan, a well-rounded midfielder from the Oakleigh Chargers. O’Sullivan is noted for his speed, contested play, and kicking ability.

4. Adelaide Crows: Expected to select Sid Draper, a prolific on-baller from South Australia. Draper has impressed with his performances in the SANFL and national championships.

5. Melbourne Demons: Anticipated to choose Jagga Smith, a dynamic midfielder from the Oakleigh Chargers. Smith is known for his clean hands, sidestep, and skills exiting stoppages.

6. Richmond Tigers: With their second pick, Richmond may select Harry Armstrong, a mobile key forward from the Sandringham Dragons. Armstrong has been touted as the best key forward in the pool.

7. St Kilda Saints: Likely to choose Jobe Shanahan, a versatile key position player from Moama. Shanahan has demonstrated strong performances in finals and is known for his exceptional talent and character.

8. St Kilda Saints: With consecutive picks, the Saints may select Matt Whitlock, a 197cm key position player from the Murray Bushrangers. Whitlock has shown incredible ability at both ends of the ground this year.

9. Melbourne Demons: Expected to pick Alixzander Tauru, a high-flying forward from Victoria Country. Tauru is sure to become a fan favourite at the next level.

10. Richmond Tigers: With their third pick in the top 10, Richmond may select Levi Ashcroft, a versatile midfielder-forward from the Sandringham Dragons. Ashcroft is the son of Marcus Ashcroft and brother of Will Ashcroft, bringing strong family ties to the club.

What a steal for Richmond at 10 😂

These projections are based on current analyses and may change as teams finalize their decisions.

I just wanted to say thanks for sharing this

Its very accurate - especially the top 10 - for him not to be given more info that other journo's get. But this looks like his biggest test - if he gets this right then he is 100% getting inside info. Also early picks - the players are told before draft night - that helps getting things out.

If we don't drop back we are taking FOS IMO.

Cal is the AFL rep journalist.

I'd suggest the AFL's appointed journo gets given broad info from clubs just to generate news.

And he talks with people lower down the food chain who work at clubs in recruiting.

AFL mic'ed negotiations this year to try to stop these sort of deals.

Maybe the AFL feed Cal all the mic'ed up audio of trade negotiations? They are probably wondering if they can get it into trade radio next year.
