I think one of the issues Gold Coast is considering is player retention. It must be a factor as is their need to replace their KPPs in May and Lynch.

I really don’t know what will happen but drafting the King twins must be an option for them. Ben is seen to be almost as good as Max so they can obviously play.

Next week’s draft will be fascinating.

I think bringing in Collins Burgess Corbett and Hombsch probably shows their hand that they won't go tall with 2 of their early picks but i get where you are coming from.

Yes, that is possible. And all of the media talk has been around GC drafting at least Lukosius, with either Rankine or Rozee as the other player.

The interesting thing is Lukosius is the obvious pick 2 and is a taller player. The Suns have pick 6 which they can use to draft a mid (Smith, Rankine or Rozee).

Max King will be difficult to pass over. He looks like an amazing prospect (despite the ACL). It’s a brave call for any club to let him slip.

Look like pick 1,2 ,3 were locked
St Kilda looking at
Rozee
Smith
Mad king
Would only do a deal with one top 6 pick and one top 10 pick for pick 4.

That is the reason we are looking to draft all the SA boys together, Luko and Rozee are tight, and are good mates with Charlie Ballard who already is on our list.

The King's have made it pretty clear they don't want to leave Victoria, as has Bailey Smith so I can't see us taking any of them.

I would be super deflated if we picked up the King brothers. Luko, Rozee and Rankine have all played some form of senior footy this year, so they already have some experience playing against grown men which should aid in fast tracking their development.

If the expected top 3 go top 3, then it feels like 4-9 are very close in value.

So pick 4 really has very little relative value. Assuming that’s correct.
Correct now that caldwell has firmed into the so called elite group. Means the crows who early on were sitting just outside the so called elite prospects could just let it play out and at 'worst' at pick 8 they could take caldwell who projects as a fantastic midfielder. Then get great talent at 13, 16 & 21. means there is less need to sell the farm to trade up

Rankine has been just as clear about not wanting to leave SA and luko prefers to stay in SA but is resigned to moving...the kings are no more a flight risk than luko or rankine

The king twins want to play together desperately, if the GC take them leaving more likely then not means going to different clubs. Doesn't guarantee the stay but would make them less of a risk to leave.

The GC recruiters already decided , nothing we can do about it . Maybe some club willing to give up rediculous offer to GC for pick 3 at the last minute.

I think they are kidding themselves if they think they have come up with a magic formula for retention. Whether it’s drafting twins or taking SA players because they are seen as more loyal in the past.

If they are serious about building a successful team, the Kings are the ones that they just have to take. Not because they are twins but because they are presenting as elite book ends. Blakey and Luko are exciting because although they may not be KPPs, they will be elite tall talents that just don’t come around very often. Rankine also a player that doesn’t come around.

But I think Luko, Rankine and Blakey are luxury players that you add to a talented team rather than build a team around. They will also get other cracks at your standard top end midfield talents like Walsh, Smith and Caldwell. They should get one at 6 and potentially 2 more at the top end of next years draft.

We all don't know isn't it , if you knew how to build an AFL team you won't be fan talking footy here instead like GWS Emma
Taking a recruiting job in an AFL club environment.

Agree to disagree. But you are 100% correct on one point, there is no magic formula to keeping players other than making sure the lads love what they do, enjoying turning up to training every day and actually putting a few W's on the board. The club has completely stripped back the assistant coaches bringing in an entirely new support staff around Dew as well as bringing in new high performance people. Will it work? Who knows, but we seem to be making all the right off field moves, hoping it creates on field success.

As far as the footy stuff goes, our big issue at the moment is actually getting it into the forward line and just getting our hands on the pill. Our key talls either end are pretty well covered with Wright down forward and Thompson (who is under rated IMO) down back. Who will be supported by Day, Collins, Crossley, Burgess, Hombsch, Corbett, most of those we bought in this trade period. Admittedly none of these are elite at the moment, and probably never will be, but they create a structure and have hardened bodies (except Crossley) who could play tomorrow if required. The Kings would be playing NEAFL for a fair chunk of the year and would take a year or 2 to even cement themselves in the best 22, as well, I would be wary of taking on a bloke at pick 2 that had a knee reco so early on. Obviously, I could be looking at it completely wrong and the club may pick the King bros but that is why the club pays people to assess these kids and makes these decisions.

So I am all for taking the top talent at 2 and 3, and that is Lukosius and Rankine, with Rozee at 6, if he is still there (I imagine he probably won't be). But that is just my opinion, some Suns supporters want us to take the Kings as well.

All I know is, it will be one of the more interesting drafts coming up.

If GC get both kings they won't be able to leave if they are fair dinkum about wanting to play together.

No team will be able to trade for both. Coming back to vic theyll be split up.

Loving the South Aussies banging on about how Gold Coast have to take the King's. I wonder why that is:rolleyes:

I know draft experts will jump up and down and say I am insane but if I were Gold Coast I would want Smith, Rozee and Caldwell. All three are midfielders, and all three are going to make it. Gold Coast are not in a position where they can be taking punts on players that might make it, so that means no King brothers, and I would be avoiding the players who seem like flight risks.

I think that people ignore the obvious a bit, and you're right.

The biggest risk in spending a top pick is the player wont develop into an A grader. That means the currency is wasted. If they do and decide to leave you can recover value in the trade. It may not be ideal, but much better.

If I were the GC I would be looking at the King twins at 2 and 3. Theres a nice symmetry in drafting twins who would compliment the squad. A highly rated pair of bookends who can rotate through the ruck. One is a ridgy-didge key position utility and the other would be going at 1 were it not for his injury. Both could be absolute superstars and would garner more media attention than Lukosius and Rankine would.

Neither Lukosius or Rankine would slide back far enough for the Crows will have to accept this and prepare to draft Hately with their first pick.

Still, its a once in a lifetime opportunity for the Suns. There are risks involved of course no matter which way they go, but I feel the King twins are the ones they should be drafting.
