Boak wins alot of his own ball, so doesn't suffer too badly from tags. Slightly agree with dogs on boak durability, but i think the 2 byes will help him (no need to get a "rest" game)

It doesnt matter how good you are at winning your own ball, you still need a midfield around you to help/protect and aid in getting even more possessions. Its proven that the 100-105+ scorers come from top 8 teams and also have very good midfielders around them. Port dont quite have that and i think Boak will avg well around 90-95 for sometime before we see the development of Hartlett, Gray, Jacobs.

only the top 4 can win a flag. everyone else is just making up the numbers :)

Not next year is my prediction.

Wont surprise me if Fremantle, Geelong, WBD finish 5th-7th and young upcoming teams like Melb, Kang, Adel finish 8th. Similar to the thoughts of melbourne last year, teams didnt want them to finish 8th.

I currently have WBD and geelong 5th and 6th.

History tells us that in the current format you can't win the flag from outside the top 4. Who are the top 4 sides in your predictions DWD?

i'm expecting the same 4 (pies, saints, cats, dogs) no one really threatening in the 5-8 bracket.

Im not saying that the 5-8 teams will win the GF next year. But if the doggies and cats are sitting 5 and 6 than people will be saying that they have the ability to win a flag from there.

My top 6
1. Collingwood
2. Hawthorn
3. Stkilda
4. Sydney
5. WBD
6. Cats

Sydneys team looks extremely dangerous

Rebounding defenders: Kennelly, Mattner, Malceski, R.Shaw
Midfielders: J.Mcbeigh, Bolton, Jack, J.Kennedy, Hanneberry, R.Shaw with (ROK, Goodes, Jetta, Mcglynn rotating through)
Players back from injuries and missed major parts of the season: Seaby (ruck), Mcglynn (very good HFF), Bradshaw (FF), C.Bolton (rated top 25 in comp only 2 or so years ago/key defender).
Improving players: Rohan, Jetta, Mumford, Grundy, Jack, Hanneberry, TDL

So with me saying this they have a great mix of everything from experience to good up and coming improvers to key players coming back

There team and possible lineup

Mattner - C.Bolton- Kennelly
Malceski - Grundy - R.Shaw
Mcveigh - J.Bolton - Hanneberry
ROK - Goodes - Mcglynn
TDL - Bradshaw - Jetta

Mumford - J.Kennedy, Jack

Very nice side if you ask me

I'd also like to know where this Hawks @ 2 consensus has bubbled up from.

Just from reading around the traps and talking to mates, they think Hawks can win the flag let along finish in the top 2 or 3. Having a look at the hawks side they have again added several weapons and experience to it. I feel if they can be injury free and find that hunger than the players on the park are as good as it gets.

They have added Hale, Bruce, Puopolo, I.Smith and several players coming back from injury like Young and a ruck or two. ATM a side i saw without having I.Smith or Puopolo in it had this bench Bateman, Ellis, Hale. Not bad if you ask me, there team on paper is as impressive as it gets.

Nick Smith is a walk up certainty. Stunning tagging jobs last year on quality players. Takes the tag on the smaller bodied outside runners. You need a 3rd tall in defence. LRT will play FB, Bolton if fit CHB and Grundy sweeping 3rd tall. I would say:

B: H Grundy LRT Shaw
HB: Malceski Bolton Kennelly
C: M Mattner McVeigh J. Hannebery
HF: O'Keefe Goodes J Bolton
F: TDL Bradshaw Moore
Foll: Mumford Kennedy Jack

Int: Seaby Smith Jetta McGlynn

Emerg: Meredith, Everitt, Bird

Yeh i agree, unfortunatly didnt get to see enough footy last year, didnt know a whole lot about Smith, but quite a few best 22 done by the swans have him as a backpocket, but he can go onto the bench and 3rd tall LRT to replace Mattner who goes onto the bench aswell.

I dont rate Moore at all, id have Bird ahead of him.

Still i think youd agree they are very capable of top 4 next year. Very nice side. Well balanced in all areas.

Put Mattner into the back pocket, Bolton/ROK onto the wing and Shaw into the forward line - he did very well playing up there late in 2010 as a defensive half forward, shutting guys down and also kicking a few goals as well. I think we will see him play a lot up there as well.

I think it is a very under-rated side - guys like Jack and Kennedy were playing exceptional footy late last year and flew under the radar IMO. If Bolton gets fit (big if), I think the defence will be very very good.

EDIT: Ah, I notice you have Mattner twice. I presume one of them is Mcgylnn?

Brings me to a point, what are you thoughts on Shaw. Avg IIRC 68ish and avg high 86ish the year before. Is that role change looking permanent and was it the negative affect on his scoring?

Can you see him going back up into the 80s?

Thoughts Lakey

Plenty of rebounding backs in Mattner, Kennelly, Malceski and Grundy (if CBolton is fit) means it will probably be hard for him to get back into that fold - particularly since Mal uses the ball so well and kennelly and grundy are good in this way too (shaw is so-so). I think that the defensive HF is an increasingly important role, and he played well there and with limited competition for that role he would be smart to stick at it. That said, there has to be a matchup that suits him, and if there isnt, he will probably drift through HB/Wing/HF much like he did in 2010. Probably similar output - could hit 80, but highly unlikely to hit 85-90 which is what you would want IMO.

isnt malceski supposed to be spending more time in midfield this year?

im sure i saw an article or someone mention it

Yeh, Mal pushing upfield a bit. Shaw had a rebounding role in '09 but very defensive role in '10. Depends how they structure up but Shaw did a great job in the shut down role so will prob continue. Swans have got some really good under rated young mids coming through. Kennedy, Jack, Jetta, Smith and Hanneberry are the core kids to help Goodes, Bolton and McVeigh. I might be biased because I see them every 2nd week but I rate the team highly. If Bradshaw stands up they'll definitely play finals IMO.

Can definitely see Swans in the top 6 based on emerging talent and returns from injury alone. TDL should have a cracker in 2011!

I think people are forgetting that they finish 5th and one game behind the buldogs. Also they only lost to the doggies by one kick (5 points) in that final to get knocked out after being on top for the entire game. For me i can only see the gap between them and the doggies if there was any last season significantly decreased and maybe even for the swans IMO gone ahead.

In the last 5 weeks of the season they smashed Hawthorn and Buldogs, beat Fremantle at subiaco all top 5 teams excluding swans. Also beat Carlton in a final and as mentioned just lost to doggies in a final in which they shouldve easily won.

...which is why JPK is a perfect candidate for breakout - just scares the hell out of me picking him as a MID

Any info on Marc Lock? Captained suns last year and still in there Leadership group, should get 22 games?

Captained the Suns the last 2 years actually. You'd imagine Weller/Smith/Lock would be in the Best 21 if they're in the leadership group.

Yeh good get, forgot about him. Should avoid the tags and his finals series which is known to produce lower DT scores than normal season, he avg 100 with 2 BOGS when Jack got attention. Last 4 rounds were very impressive. If you see him avg 90 next year than pick him, yes it isnt good enough for a keeper, but SD will tell you that if you think a player will improve that much than pick them.

Hes a good pick, Sydney should be right up there IMO, so expect improvements across the board, although the new coach may play a role in this.

I currently have Shuey, Mclean and Swallow as my 4th, 5th and 6th midfielders. Is it a waste to have them all? If so which is the best option?
