Cox and Hmac from day 1. Now Hmac is down i really dont know what to do. Play Giles finally? Trade Hmac for Sandi? Downgrade to a spud and hope Cox and Giles can hold out?

Could it be a blessing in disguise for me. Having Giles on the bench all year obviously wasn't great - it was just that Hmac was kicking ass. Maybe now i get to use that money sitting on the ruck bench and put it to good use elsewhere.

Seriously? You paid exactly what for Giles, and now he's worth too much to have as backup for a notoriously injury prone position.
FFS he outscored Sandilands this week.

Slow down and read my post again.

Where did I say I wasn't going to keep Giles? Choices were either

A - Hmac for a spud (Stephenson), running Cox + Giles, Stephenson and Redden on the pine like almost every else has been since day 1. Pocket $300k from Hmac and use it elsewhere.

or B - Hmac to Sandi, keeping Giles as cover.

Anyway it might not matter at all. Hmac doesn't seem to be as bad as first thought.

Yeah it just strikes me that option A is very likely to leave you with a doughnut some weeks, whats the chances that O or Redden will be playing the week you need them?

Option B. Sandilands was considered an unreliable option at the start of the year ( I picked him for my DT though because fairly cheap ). You could well go out of the frying pan into the fire with that choice.

I have Cox, HMac, Giles in my SC and Giles is so reliable I'll be holding onto HMac for anything less than a season ender. (Then again I still have cash at this point, I may change my mind later ).

Im sitting midrange in my league and probably need to take a few risks to climb up top.

For 7 rounds i haven't needed a backup ruck. If i could get through another 7 rounds without needing backup then i would still come out in front points wise even if i had to cop a 0 or 2 in the rucks but used the 300k on say getting Swan in now. A LTI would force a ruck trade either way, its only a short injury of say a week or 2 that would really cause a problem.

So 7 rounds with only 1 or 2 0's to Cox + Giles then I come out even.
7 rounds no 0's and I come out infront.
Any more than 7 rounds and im well infront.

I really thing its worth the risk. Im not going to climb up my league by playing it safe and doing the same trades as everyone else.

keep until he slows down in the second half of the year like smith did. However Giles looks a lot more developed and fitter than Smith so he might be a season keeper should average 85

Yes, but what of those who started with two gun rucks? Giles is great back-up, but it seems wasteful having him on the pine most weeks. Hmmm ...

My opinion is to keep Giles until all your rucks have gone through their byes. Then assess if you can find a good downgrade target in the rucks as backup for your premos. That is IF you really want or need to cash Giles in to upgrade elsewhere

That was my plan. I doubt there will be any good downgrade targets in the rucks by then.

Why not consider Hmac to Pattison and use Roughead as your F7 and ruck cover? win/win?

Half thinking about trading Redden to Jenkins.

Currently have Jacobs, Giles, Stephenson and Redden.

Won't fix my r11 bye issues, but won't make them worse (assuming Redden doesn't play).

I suppose it comes down to JS for both Redden and Jenkins, but if Jenkins keeps playing it means he could be good back-up, and potentially the source of some good late season cash.

Not much money to be made there, Suma. Why not wait 1 week more week and trade Big 0rren to Jenkins instead? He has a B/E of -62 and could be 200k+ after this week if he can score another 70+

Have you seen what Jenkins b/e is?

18 less than Big O's. No guarantee that he will outscore him though. Moot point on my behalf though. Disregard my post Suma. I didn't realise that Jenkins was on the bubble. (Thought it was his 1st game) Damn shame he's on the bubble this week and that Redden & O haven't played a game or 2 more to this point, could have been a worthwhile (cash generating wise) downgrade.

Does involve some guessing of JS, but if Jenkins plays enough games, and Redden doesn't, could be a good way to make some money. I've got 18 trades left (still a fair bit to upgrade but easily enough trades to do it), so it looked like a potential way to make $200k and also maybe decrease my chance of ruck donuts should Giles or Jacobs miss games.

Redden was an emergency on the weekend, but I read that Lobbe may be coming back.

Maybe I'm just being fooled by Jenkins' amazing goals on the weekend. Pretty impressive though.

You have way too many trades left. What have you been doing?

I'd have to agree.

Was going to use two last week but when Smedts wasn't named I decided against it. Didn't go with Spurr as I have 4 r12 defenders already (will trade Clarke to Waters that round to avoid one of the donuts).

Will use two this week and likely two the next. then a fair few through the byes.

I've probably over-prioritised cash over points by waiting for my cows to mature. This has meant I haven't had the cash for upgrades.

I'm also going for a fairly back-ended and bye friendly strategy. Only my second year of DT so im pretty crap (probably the key point), probably learnt a lesson though.

Picking a good starting side presumably. If you don't have to fix mistakes in the first month there's no reason to have less at this point unless you like killing good rookies off after one or two price rises and setting hundreds of thousands of dollars on fire.

By not trading early you miss out on all the quality rookies who are best 22 and end up getting fringe rookies who are in and out of sides.

The way this year is, you can get 27 keepers with 24 trades. So if you set your DPP you dont need to many LTI's for the run home as you have a gun/premium sitting on the bench.

I don't disagree, and absolutely support going hard and early from an overall perspective. I've already picked up Treloar/Adams/Horse/Spurr and obv Zorko this week. The only rookie in the top 14 price rises I don't have is Greene who I didn't rate above Cogs at the time and still don't. So four trades at most makes for a perfect set of rookies, both in your lineup of the start of this week and in terms of cash generated and banked for those culled. That's 20. If you've made two upgrades already in 5 rounds of price changes you've turned over the majority of your initial rookie picks and at least two of them within three weeks of price changes. Therefore to be below 18 you've been hit with injuries (Fyfe + ?), you've somehow burned rookies after either one or two price changes or less for other poor rookies that aren't even in top 15 in profit, or you've been making sideways trades which by definition have to be mistakes you made originally.

Nothing wrong with getting your team right early and fixing whatever's wrong, it's obviously optimal given the ridiculous amount we're allocated amd I doubt it'll even impact significantly in the long run. Point is you say 18 is way too many to have left, so presumably you think something like 15 is reasonable? There's no possible logical trading plan that gets you there if you didn't either make significant errors in your starting team or get savaged by LTIs.

If you have avoided injuries and havnt had to do sideways trades then you should have been getting in guys like Beams, SJ, Chappy, Zaka, ROK in the forwards or Pendles, Mitchell, Rockliff, Boyd ect in the mids, cox was cheap as a ruck 2 weeks ago. Enright, Mackie, Shaw, BJ, Suckling all dropped fair amounts of price as backs.

I just dont understand keeping a rookie when they are say 250k, maybe you can squeeze another 50k out of them when a premium has dropped to 400k and is expected to also rise by 50k over the same period as the rookie. Your missing too many points.

I must admit i havnt upgraded too much just yet. Mumford and Fyfe were LTIs for me. Broughton was not really a mistake but not picking Deledio was so i did that after 2 rounds to avoid it costing me too much coin. Lids hasnt scored under a ton since and has been very much worthwhile that little cash i had to pay.

I guess my strategy this year has to trade for money, looking back im not sure if it has been the best move or not. Still yet to really know. I traded JMAC > Greene after his suspension pretty glad i got on Greene. I then traded JMac back into my side for Magner when he was only 210k. That made me 115k and then Jmac has risen to 240k expected 300k+ so really it has made me plenty of coin but also cost me a trade. If people had kept Magner to this point im not sure who you would downgrade him too, the rookies are so poor at the moment.

But back on topic. Will be interesting to see how people go in the rucks to avoid the donuts. I hope Redden and Stephenson don't play in R11-13. Sorry to be cruel, he is in my side.
