How can he "sign up" with GWS already...surely they'd need to put a trade in place first?!

They have the first pick in the national draft and the preseason draft.

Martin can walk to them for nothing in the PSD, for $100 a week too if he wants it. GWS have all the power here, it would be stupid to give up anything for someone they can get for free.

Take it with a grain of salt. I think they would be referring to a deal set in place or terms agreed to between player and club.

The last place Richmond want Dusty going is GWS.

With the first pick in the PSD and national draft they can hold Richmond to ransom with any trade put forth.

I doubt Melbourne or St kilda would be keen on him for obvious reasons, dogs don't need him so really we might just be the best possible team to deal with.

Sadly i don't think we could match what GWS could pay him if indeed they are keen.

Surely Richmond have the right to try and get something for him rather than let him go to the PSD?

They have all the right in the world to try, but if you knew you could get a Ferrari for free in two months or pay anything for the same car now, what would you do?

What I mean is the right to try and get a deal done with another club. Does the player get to dictate where he gets traded to or just the salary he's willing to accept?

Channel 7 apparently reported he's signed with GWS.

They are the only ones that have reported that so far so until i see it on the AFL website i will hold out hope that we are going for him.

lol he isn't a fa.

He can dictate where he gets traded to in the sense that he has to agree to sign the contract with said club.

We can offer Richmond NicNat, Selwood and JK but if we only offered Martin 200k a year he is not going to sign with the club. Obviously we wouldn't do that but just giving an (extreme) example.

Essentially everyone involved, clubs and players, have to accept the deal or it doesn't get done.

The player has to agree to any trade. If Martin doesn't want to be traded to Port, or West Coast, or whoever, it won't matter what salary they're prepared to pay him.

So GWS can basically offer him a truckload of salary and a paltry, unreasonable trade offer to Richmond. I feel sorry for Richmond, imagine we lost Masten for nothing in return? And god I hate GWS >:

if martin wants to move west (and that's a big if), and Richmond can't afford to keep him... can they really demand all that much? they're not exactly well positioned.

second round draft pick + rosa/smith etc

There are Andrew Lovett trades and there are Rhys Shaw trades - if our club has anything to show for the last six years, it has to be that the culture has improved, and if we can't say that, then well, we haven't achieved much.

If we've placed anywhere near as much emphasis on this side of things as the club has said we have, surely we'd be able to curb a bloke like Martin. Pay him a large sum if we can afford it, subject him to a rigorous pre-season, get his endurance up, and we'll have a deadset jet on our hands. Get it done.

Correct.

I suspect they'll try to be at least a little bit reasonable though, since they've got a heap of talented youngsters and will find themselves on the other side of this situation a fair bit down the track.

If he does want to come home then Richmond really don't have much to bargain with. The deal still has to be struck but they would be on the back foot. Considering we have plenty in our cap this year I reckon we would go hard at it.

They don't even need to offer Richmond a trade. They only need to wait until the PSD.
There was always going to a player who got snapped up like that on big cash, Franklin may fall off the other end of the bed though, that could be the next big story. GWS take Martin over Franklin. Franklin goes to ??

He is a huge gamble, it smells like desperation to go after him because you would need to put the blinkers on and ignore his off field troubles and lack of loyalty to sign him purely on football ability and unfortunately that isn't how it works, it is a package deal these days.

Would love to have him in our side, he is exactly what we need skill set wise, but it is a huge risk to ignore his negatives and trade away pick 6 and pay big $ for this bad egg.

He wouldnt come over here anyway, but I would stay clear if he did as much as it pains me to say...
