Scandal Dustin Martin in drunken scuffle

I'll be serious for a moment...

I think this is actually bloody bad. I usually lean toward the "boys will be boys" when it comes to players playing up... few drinks or pills here, a drunken scuffle there... but seriously, in a restaurant, standing over a woman, intimidating, threatening physical abuse and slamming your hand against the wall right next to her head?

That's pretty bad stuff I reckon. If I saw some random bloke doing that I'd think "what a piece of shit", and I dare say so would most other posters regardless of which footy club they happen to support.

Intimidating and threatening to physically harm a woman is beyond the regular drunken buffoonery in my book. It's loss of control stuff. Somebody needs to give the kid a clip and tell him to pull his head in. I really don't think a bloke like Dimma Hardwick will take kindly to this.
Oh calm down! So gullible to believe the most hyped up, exaggerated version of some non-event. If this pathetic woman was as terrified and fearful of her life why didn't she go to the cops? The whole things a beat up. If that really happened why hasn't even 1 other person been able to verify what happened?

Honestly as a guy - we need to take violence towards women more seriously as a society. The amount of excuses in this thread is pretty pathetic. Its clear that Martin is absolutely in the wrong and he has history in this direction too. Its not like poor innocent Martin got entrapped by the conniving women. No its physically aggressive Martin intimidated and threatened a woman because she dared to call him out - no doubt because he was being a drunken lout. Even if that wasn't the case there was no need for violent actions - he clearly escalated the scenario.

I think they should make Martin take a significant education course on violence against women and apologise (so not even proposing missing matches or anything football related) - lets have a punishment that fits the actual crime.

Do you have the same opinion of terrified women who don't report domestic violence to police?

Yeah this should be swept under the carpet and ignored, don't bother investigating what happened because there's nothing wrong with threatening to stab a woman and then hitting the wall behind her to intimidate.

If he did this to a dude it would still be bad and poor behaviour. But the fact it's to a woman takes it next level and disgraceful.

This is incredibly similar to that dockers supporter, that shoved that lady in the throat.
He went to jail for that, he is so lucky there is no vision of this incident.
And very lucky he hit the wall.
Lack of respect to the woman is amazing, Richmond need to be really strong here.

While I agree with your post you have to ask why this woman, the restaurant owners or other patrons didn't phone the police or at least lodge a complaint to the police if she was as terrified as she says. Instead she waits till Monday to ring the club and speak to the media about it.

I'm not condoning his behaviour but if it's as bad as its being made out then charges should be laid not just a complaint to the club.

I'd imagine she wanted to give the ol' 'club hush money' tin a bit of a rattle to see if there was anything in it.

Why because she is a woman is this more of an issue? He either threatened a person or he didn't

Seems like more an more 'women' are a protected species now who can antagonize people all they want without fear of retaliation

Imagine the story if 2 chicks followed clarko screaming at him in the ear an yelling and he hit one
He'd be doing time ... Why is it different ? ( even though I think clarko was fair enough defending himself )

Or if a bloke had called dusty over and told him he was embarrassing himself an threatening to call the club people would say the cloke got what he deserved

Don't you dare try to lecture me on the seriousness of violence against women! Seeing as though I've experienced domestic violence first hand when I was victim to physical abuse in a past relationship I know the difference between being terrified of going to the police through fear of what your psychotic bf will do to you AND not going to the police because nothing actually happened worth reporting; Clearlt she wasn't hurt, scared, threatened or traumatised because a drunk afl player yelled at her after she thought it would be a good idea to interfere with a highly intoxicated stranger by telling them off and threatening to call their employer and make a complaint! I'm sorry but who does she think she is telling him what to do while he's out on a Saturday night having fun. He may have been annoying but he wasn't hurting anyone. There are drunk people being loud and obnoxious everywhere and it's no one else's business to tell them they can't! I'm sick of how all the guys on here are suddenly acting so concerned about violence towards women... what have any of you done to help stop violence or raise awareness? I bet....Nothing!! So stop pretending you care about such a serious issue when it's quite obvious it's just about making yourselves look good.

Hard to understand how people can defend his actions, very ordinary and a sad insight into the type of person he is.
I'm really surprised how many people in this thread find this so funny and not serious. I thought 95% would be disgusted and 5% would be cracking gags about it, but it's really the other way around. Pretty disappointing. This is totally disgraceful and he should cop it big time. A slap on the wrist for threatening a woman (or anyone really) will not cut it. What kind of message does this send? What an A-hole...

Dusty will be banned for a few weeks I'm sure, just unacceptable behaviour.

Luckily he already provisionally suspended himself at the start of the off-season, just as a precaution, so he won't actually miss any games.

If you haven't heard about this it's because player privacy matters. And before you ask, yes, he was neverthless still eligible for selection for the International Rules.
...oh and scratch matches against VFL clubs - np either.

If someone is genuinely threatened and scared, they usually call the police. That may not always be the case though. Sometimes, people who are threatened won't go to the police, fearing that they will receive problems later on for contacting the police either from the one who threatened them or their family/friends. So they just leave it alone.

She was pressured to speak out from what I heard, so she may have told a coworker or a family member and they told her to speak out.

The issue is, was there anyone else at that scene who can verify that exact detail that she provided? I'd imagine that such ordeal would be a memorable moment for those who were there, so I would wait until I have heard from others who state the exact same thing before I accuse him of doing this. It is easy for a single person to go to the media and exaggerate a situation if no one is there to verify it and the accused himself cannot remember well due to intoxication. It isn't like this hasn't been done before.

Not rushing to accuse him is showing courtesy towards Dusty as this quite a serious allegation from my point of view. I'd do it for other people too, even if they were not Richmond players.

Why he was intoxicated though is blameworthy on its own. That itself should be looked at by the club

So tell me, why did Hodge get behind the wheel full of booze. Really please tell me, I'm sure there was a legitimate excuse.

Why not rename this thread "Richmond supporters are hypocrites"

No excuses from Hodge. He made a terrible mistake, showed genuine remorse and copped a flogging from joe public.
While Dusty - with plenty of previous form gets a free pass from Tigers fans who wanted Hodge to hang.

If only Dusty could show the same passion and anger on the field in September.

Wow. I am surprised to hear Dustys full admission. I assumed it was a wildly exaggerated story.
Wouldn't be shocked if he's sacked. Deserves a penalty that takes into account the seriousness of violence against woman.
Must be. A whopping fine, 4-8 weeks and a zero tolerance on future behaviour if we keep him. One more incident and see you later.
Anything less and then put a fork in us as a club. We'll be cooked.
Show real leadership Cotch!

From what we have heard, he's admitting it and showing remorse. Called the lady and apologised unreservedly.

Agree with this. If I saw Dustin off his face I know as a male the consequences of telling a drunk to quiet down would be abuse/altercation. If he was such an issue get security to remove him/barstaff. Asking someone in that state to quiet down? Seriously I know friends who would do it, and the only reason they would is to pick a fight/create a situation. No doubt the woman got What she wanted
