Dusty the Clanger King

Absolutely stunned to see that Dustin Martin has scored 5 or more clangers in a game more than anyone in the history of the game (since recorded stats). He has achieved the feat 100 times, the only player to ever raise the bat. Incredible to see a player like Scott Pendlebury be nowhere near the list despite playing 360 plus games and Joel Selwood well down the list despite playing 355 games. Martin has recorded 5 or more clangers in 36.9% of his games. Is there a valid reason why this very good player makes so many clangers?

Stunned isn't the word I'd use, however, as a counter-point take his Qualifying Final against Brisbane in 2019.
He had 14 disposals, six of which were goals kicked off his own boot. Incidentally he had 10 clangers during this game as well.
It's fair to say that you need to consider what qualifies as a "clanger" before you assign a negative value to it.

It’s a pretty easy one to understand for those that have more than a passing interest in AFL.

But you seem to be asking a genuine question so I can help you out.

While I can’t see the title of your table it makes it tricky to put context to. 5 clangers in a game is quite the arbitrary number. But the graphic does look like it’s from AFL tables.

Look on that site for average changers and you will see prolific ball winners and game changers that win the contest and take to difficult kick.

There are three that stand out that average over 4 clangers per game across their careers- Oliver, Kelly and Cripps.

All outstanding players in their own right. They win a lot of contested ball and get it out in tight. More likely that they don’t kick as effectively in this range than guys who are more outside like Pendles. Selwood in the top 50 with just over 3 per game, but he was elite in close and often drilled a handball out rather than a longer kick, or received a free kick to take the pressure off his next possession (which surprisingly made up over 10% of his total career possession rate).

Yell out if you need anything else.

By percentage:

Taylor Adams
Cripps
Dusty
Fyfe
Toby Greene

Martins disposal has always been hit and miss not much in between, either one of the best kicks you will see or an absolute loaf of bread.
Yep, and gets nailed HTB more often than others as he has the strength to get arms free in tackles where others don’t.

Crazy stuff but you could argue he could play smart and pretend his arms are pinned like most players do.

So biting off more than he can chew by foot, and resisting tackles rather than dead-fishing it, those are his ‘failings’.

Doesn’t run as hard defensively either.

Any team would take ‘em together with 3 normies but!

There’s a reason so many great players are on this list - crap stats. The more a player is involved in the game, the higher the probability of clangers. A spud who plays on the fringes getting 6 possessions in a game is unlikely to have 5 clangers and hence is rated a gun by these stupid stats. How many of the 5+ clanger games did Dusty kick multiple goals or get 30+ possies? Stats don’t tell you. Same for other clanger “spuds” like Buddy, Danger et al.

Good thread. Not for the inevitable cheap shots but for trying to understand "why is it so?"

It would be interesting to combine metres gained with this stat too - I think Pendlebury and Selwood do more link-up style play. Martin often goes long either at goal or to set up a goal.

Richmond's game plan would have a bit to do with it as well - just get the pill forward at all costs.

Also think that going forward, it is much harder to hit up a target, and it is not so important to keep possession. What I mean by the latter is that going inside 50, it is all about getting a goal. Who cares if you can spot up a guy 45m out on a 60 degree angle 9 out of 10 times? How often does that get you a goal? A deeper, more risky option has a better chance of a goal. If you screw it up - what's the difference between that and the 45m out easy pass not ending up in a goal anyway?

Going forward you are more likely to have the "spare in defence" taking an uncontested turnover mark.

Only thing about that argument is that it is more about disposal efficiency than out and out clangers. I don't know the precise definition of a clanger but it should be different for a kick out of d50 to a kick into d50 in my opinion.

And the good players are asked to do the hard tasks. Only needs to come off a few times to get a few goal assists.

I think it has to do with the old SAS motto : Who Dares Wins

ie. Dusty is way more likely to try and pull off the impossible kicks, hence more chance of a clanger...yes ppl will remember his exquisite kicks (no don't ask me to list them, it's a general impression) that came off and so opinions of him may be biased.

while for Pendles, Selwood, who remembers them as exquisite kicks...doubt if many (ok, I may be biased here) but no problem saying that most ppl think Pendles can make time stand still

No wonder he pulled Richmond to their recent flags...Who Dares Wins

Agree with all of that
Especially that last paragraph

Looking at that list you could post that list of players and say it’s the list of the most damaging players to play AFL

All the guys on it are very aggressive in terms of how they attack with ball in hand in terms of trying to score

None of them would be anywhere near what would be considered bad users of the footy if anything they are some of the best we have ever seen
