Dwayne ' shit commentator ' Russell - PART 2 in 3d

Did Russell really say that a regulation shot on goal midway through the final quarter was the "most important moment of Walker's career"?

Yep, I honestly thought he was taking the piss. But then I remembered I was listening to Dwayne.

Does the AFL realise there are probably people overseas watching these games online, and they are listening to him talk utter garbage?

"That's ball"

No the ****ing red thing is the ball, you c*nt.

Can't believe Dwayne missed an opportunity for a 'get and go' today.

Instead he said the West Coast player 'gathers it and gets going'.

Is this some kind of change in one of Dwayne's trademark catchphrases? Has he been told to shelve the 'get and go' by Foxtel? or was it just an aberration?

Seemed weird when he didn't say 'get and go', almost like he was commentating like a normal person.

He did roll out a 'kill shot' though in the last quarter so that catchphrase is still in his arsenal.

Dwayne's definitely taking the piss now. He has to be. He knows about the drinking games, he knows about this thread. He's embraced being a joke and seemingly Fox don't care.

yer he didn't even use his new favourite "the quirk of the draw" when he mentioned during the coverage the last time the Eagles played the Kangas was Rd 1 last year - i thought that was a perfect opening for him:D

David King just referred to Derwayne as the best caller in the business.

Surely taking the piss..

He seems to be well respected amongst his colleagues.

My theory is: His colleagues and competitors give him plaudits in a cunning plan to keep Derwayne employed. This then keeps criticism away from any of their calls as the general public maintain their rage with Russell's awful calls.

I think the thing is, Russell could be a good caller. Unlike some others here, I think he's got a good voice for commentary. He loves the game, he enjoys studying the history of players, and he certainly has the ability to fill air.

The problem is that he finds a way to turn all of his strengths into weaknesses. His distinctive voice becomes easy to hate when he talks crap all the time. He loves the game so much that he starts to commentate like a supporter at a bar rather than a professional in a commentary box. He studies the history of players but then spends time crapping on about hometowns and original preferred clubs rather than anything interesting, and rather than simply fill air with commentary, he fills it with his own hand-crafted list of cliches.

If he just stuck to doing the basics, he'd be a good commentator. Instead he's a caricature of a good commentator.

Haha i noticed this, but there was a slight pause before he spat it out. in the previous 10 minutes of play he used the get and go about 5 times

It's not doing much for my alcoholism I can tell you..

That's genius. My respect for David King just went up a notch.

That's a really fair post. I hope he reads it and takes it on board.

That's the perfect description. It's like someone taking the piss out of the commentary industry by creating a completely over the top stereotype.

Absolutely spot on here guys, it's a bit of a waste when he actually has a pretty smooth voice.

Been lurking here for a while but haven't posted. Cannot be contained any longer.
He pulled out the 'THAT'S CRAZYGOOD!!!' in the Essendon-Brisbane game, when I believe it was Monfries had it near the goalpost, turned to try and goal and it was smothered/touched as it left his boot on the goal line, but this did not stop him deviating from his script.

You could tell he was just itching to let go of the CRAZYGOOD, he had to get it out, the fact that 1 of the other commentators almost simultaneously noted that it was touched and was probably going to be reviewed, strangling Dwayne's CRAZYGOOD, was irrelevant.

Watching your team get smashed while listening to this epic peanut screaming like an orgasmic banshee about it, is the definition of hell.
