Gws and other club fans are worried about hawks getting Dylan, they should be worried about not one, but two mids.
It’s one of those weird situations where people will be praying hawks get Lynch so they have no more wiggle room to chase A grade mids.

Just like Whitfield and Hopper last year. Why do Hawks fans troll so badly?

We were “3rd in line” for Stringer, Saad and Smith too last year.

From whom?.....None of the other big Vic clubs, that's for sure.

Stringer had 'issues', Saad was a nice get & a few were after Smith, but no club of any significance.

Davis has never been spilled what he got to move from Adelaide, likely got huge overs initially but wouldn't be surprised if he has done what Scully did.
Hopper, one journo said $500k, seems a bit high tbh
Shiel, $600k ish, bought into the team culture early, could get a lot more and will one day, just a question of when.
Cogs, signed before the Prelim in 2016, team was flying, publicly stated he didn't hesitate to sign, would be surprised if he was on a cent over $500k.
Kelly, $800k
Greene, rumoured to be $5mil over 6 years, so just over $800k
Lobb, bit like Cogs, signed early when the team was flying, would be a lot under what he could get elsewhere.
Cameron, at the time he signed it was reported $4mil over 5 years, $800k
Paton, loves Sydney, just signs on the dotted line each time, club has re-signed him in the past after ACL injuries. Would be under $500k
Whtfield, as above, loves Sydney, re-signed after his ban, under $500k
Shaw, took a pay cut to get an extra year to help keep Kelly, his deal after leaving Pies was 5 years at $3.5mil with Colingwood paying some of it. Under $500k
Ward, moved for $800k and has since resigned for 5 years.
Scully, moved for $6mil over 6 years, rejigged his contract like Shaw in 2016 for $500k a year until 2021.
Taranto, second year player so still on set contract, be under $200k I think. Might go up to $300k max next season.

Taranto extended by 2 years recently till the end of 2020 so would be on more than 200k P/A. Ditto Setterfield. I presume Deledio wouldnt have come cheap either (500k or so), and he's not mentioned up there. Tomlinson would be on good coin too, having had a few big money offers from clubs in Victoria before re-signing. He'd be on at least 400k if not more.

Even if those very conservative figures are correct, you're over the cap. That's nearly 8 million dollars spent on 14 players, not including Tomlinson, Setterfield, Deledio and Taranto's inflated salary.

Your remaining 30 or so listed players are on a combined 5 million, or 150 grand each.

If Kelly is on 800k, and Shiel is on 600k, you can bet your bottom dollar they both field offers next year of double that and more from Vic clubs, on long term deals.

My thoughts on the players salaries and not taking into account front or back loading
Cameron/Greene 900k
Kelly Coniglio and Shiel 800k
Ward/Davis 6-700
The rest of the higher payed players would be on 5-600 Tomlinson Haynes Scully Lobb Whitfield
Hopper is on his first extension so 2-300 and will only go up if he signs on past 2020
Taranto is still on his draft contract and next year it will likely go up to 2-300
All amounts are just guesses from reading articles and understanding that players will be payed similar based on worth to the team

Geelong were heavily into Stringer actually. And Carlton chased heavily for both Saad and Smith. Actually, there were media articles that said Geelong were front runners for Stringer and that the deals were practically all signed off for Saad and Smith.

All successful playing groups face a time when players have to accept less to remain part of the group.

This is where predictions if what we'll do is badly wrong in my view. What we will do is go as hard as we can to win a flag, not hang around to play finals for extended period, though that would be good too.

It's nonsense to suggest players will stick around in the hope if a flag and then leave as is commonly suggested for us. That's never happened and will never happen. If we can pull it off it will bind the group together. Players may well choose to acceotless to stay anyway, but it would certainly make it easier.

He's a perfect fit for the Dons really, missing piece of the puzzle if you will. We can offer pick 8 plus either a second rounder or shuffle of picks somewhere. Maybe throw something else in and get Setterfield in a package deal. Would put us into premiership contention and he'd be at arguably the biggest club in the comp.

Come to the Dons Shiely boy!

To be honest I'm reading a lot about hawthorn and Carlton but the club leading the race for shiel is flying largely under the radar.

As it stands as of tonight there is a fair distance between Essendon and the other suitors. Fact.

Ultimately gws hold the power but shiel's preference is essendon. It would be fair to say that Devon smith hasn't hurt.

For sure mate.

But like I said, even if those conservative figures are correct, you're facing an uphill battle (if not an impossible battle) to retain players next year.

You know North are coming after Kelly with an OTT offer (10 million dollar godfather offer) and they certainly wont be alone (The Saints and Carlton have been saving massive warchests over several years now). Ditto Shiel (who is a free agent). Even if you could somehow keep both players, and convince both of them to earn half what they would be earning elsewhere, you'll lose players elsewhere to similar offers.

And it's not like the other successful clubs down south have difficulty attracting free agents or players either. Heck most players go to top clubs (Hawthorn and Geelong in recent years, Richmond as well).

Just saying, I can see the logic in trading a few blokes out now for a better draft return than you would get if they left as F/A or uncontracted players, and then using that money to lock in other players on long term frontloaded deals.

How can you say that as a fact?
