Id have zac smith but no doubt you wouldnt knock back swallow or hepple, all stars of the future

Scary part is GC have 2 of them + any number of others that could be as good as them

Oh, you think "discussion" involves simply saying the name of your teams player, do you?

Some may have been trolling, some may have been attempting serious discussion.

But if you really want to leave others out of this, you're going to have to try another board, seriously. Heppell is a gun, without a doubt, but it's almost inevitable people will chip in with what they think are better Rising Star candidates. Discussions of Naitanui involve comparisons with Smith, McEvoy and Watts for example.

It's just the nature of it all.

I can't quite believe I'm saying this about a #1 draft pick, but a lot of people seem to be overlooking David Swallow. Not only is he playing most of the game out of the centre square and winning the ball at centre bounces and stoppages, but his stats even stack up well against anyone (for the stat-obsessed here). I'm not even making the "give him more credit because he's playing for the wooden spooners" argument, he doesn't even need that.

Maybe the standards expected of him are so much higher than anyone else, but in my opinion he is the equal of any other eligible player.

because somehow, magically, when you play as a rover or ruck-rover you "get your own ball", but if the place you line up when the ball is bounced is roughly 25 metres away, you somehow cease to earn your own ball; rather you run around "loose" picking up "easy possessions".

Never mind that wings and flanks are essentially midfielders these days. It is IMPOSSIBLE to be inside or win your own ball if you start on the back flank or the wing; however if you start on the bench and rotate through the middle, you do win your own ball.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense
Heppell had 1 contested possession on the weekend, less than every other player who played a full game that week. Normally he gets a few more but he's certainly not a player who wins much of the ball himself. But does that really matter? His best position is loose behind the ball, where he can see it coming in, peel off the pack and use his good skills and good football brain to impact the match.

Smith should win the Rising Star anyway in my opinon, ruck is a much tougher position to play and he wins it most weeks.

It's pretty clear to everyone else. Maybe one day you'll get it.

Seriously LLD, stop wasting my time.. I think someone has posted something worth reading or something different so i click the link just to find you knocking a 19 y.o kid in his first season of AFL..

Its getting really old. Surely you have something better to do than to keep throwing out usless, one lined responses with absoloutely nothing to back them up.

Either Heppell or Smith would be worthy winners of the award.

Heppell has been absolutely outstanding, and the mere fact he'd be right up there in the calculations of the Essendon Best and Fairest in his very first season is a testament to his outstanding ability.

He's already one of my favourite players, which is saying something since I abhor Essendon. What a player he is.

Personally, I think the RS is between Swallow, Shuey, Smith and Heppell.
ZSmith was amazing in the first half of the year but he's been pretty quiet the past few weeks and I think the mantle of being the #1 ruck at GC is taking its toll.

Swallow was conversely quiet (with a few very good games) in the first half of the year, whilst he's really started to hit his straps and other than Ablett has been the GCs best player in the past few weeks.

Shuey has had some amazing games, some quiet games and is a little harder to read, his good games are awesome though. Has been very, very good this year.

Heppell hasn't put a foot wrong this year and has been amazingly consistent, his poor games are still quite reasonable and his best is pretty damn good, but not to the calibre of a Shuey. His advantage over the other candidates is his remarkable consistency.

NB: I realise this thread is not about the RS.

If you're going to include Shuey you might as well include Savage too - who has had a practically identical season to date. He's only had one down game this season, and a game where he came on as sub*. He's been an absolute revelation for us with his long kicking, skills/finishing ability and hard running.

*(his 'sub' game he came on and kicked a few goals to change the game in our favour with four possessions - which would skew his season average possession stats)

I don't think you need to tell Essendon supporters how good he is. Unfortunately got to see that for ourselves, live :(

That would be you, the one who's adding nothing.

conca before heppell? LMFAO!

Another monumental stuff up from the tigers who took a big risk(refer casino Jackson) drafting conca at 6 against all the convential wisdom.

Ouch!

Getting agitated at this, can't wait to see you when Heppell doesn't win the Rising Star.
Agitated? Please. You made a point which I sought clarification for. You claimed it a remarkable feat that Selwood cracked the Geelong side in his first year. The fact is that no matter how dominant the side is, to get a regular game you only have to be 22nd best (not saying that Selwood was 22nd btw)

Which player did Selwood keep out of the side in 2007 to make it a remarkable feat? I honestly can't think of anyone except Kane Tenace or David Johnson which is why I ask you since I believe you would remember the Cats' list of that year a lot better than me.
