Inglis is better than Phillipe and he'll be there, Philippe is so bad as a keeper it's quite hilarious too, you blokes thought Wade was bad well hold my beer with Phillipe, hey Handscomb is bad and he isn't much worse!

I'd be happy with McSweeney and Inglis as the reserve bats, Josh doubles as a keeper. Connolly to go as a psuedo 3rd spinner/bat/AR.
Depending how severe the decks are going to be, it's not out of the realms of possibility going in with all 3 spinners, plus Connolly & Webster as the sole seam option.
Personally, I'd still prefer to have at least one pace bowler

Still pick Starc as even if it's a few overs it's nice to be able to blast some out earl, good with reverse swing and the tail too.

Ussie is coming off a poor India series and has never excelled in Sri Lanka (@28) not even a ton, specially moderate at Galle where both Tests are.

I think Ussie will keep going as long as he can fie two reasons.

He has probably just played the hardest series for a few years. Everyone will make runs in the West Indies and maybe even Sri Lanka.

People will laugh at this reason but his wife clearly wants a long career in the media and as an influencer. It's in her best interests that he keeps playing. It's a big reason as it means there is no pressure from the wife to spend more time with family.

Do feel they want to not have 2-3 retire at the same time, probably Ussie next summer, Smith a summer after that (might get to the Indian one the year after but lets assume that one), Lyon probably around that mark too.

It's been announced:

Australia squad for Sri Lanka Tests: Steve Smith (c), Sean Abbott, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cooper Connolly, Travis Head (vc), Josh Inglis, Usman Khawaja, Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Nathan McSweeney, Todd Murphy, Mitchell Starc, Beau Webster

Going by the recent article on Fox Sports, its a 15 man squad that's going to be announced in an hour;

Khawaja
Head
Lab
Smith
McSweeney
Handscomb
Webster
Connolly
Carey
Inglis
Starc
Boland
Lyon
Murphy
Kuhnermann

If it is 15, then I think Konstas misses out...Despite his lack of 1st Class experience, I don't mind Connolly as the bolter for this kind of tour.

We will find out shortly

It ended up being 16.

Disgraceful treatment of Maxwell once again. The second best Victorian to ever represent Australia in all forms of Cricket after Warnie, a genuine match winner and someone laid the catalyst for our World Cup win two years ago.

Yet they pump him up saying he will be in the frame for international tests, but they go and pick a kid based of zero tests and BBL form. They don’t allow Maxwell to put numbers up in the shield, push him to be a T20/ODI specialist - then they make the excuse he doesn’t have enough games in the belt in the test format, the hypocrisy is shocking.

The bias against Victoria is clear as day. Mitch Marsh was given nearly 50 tests and produced mostly SFA. Marnus the last year has been dreadful- if a Victorian put up that form they’d be axed after a game.

We can’t even get Boland to be a mainstay in the lineup even after taking 21 wickets in 3 games - if he played all 5 tests he would’ve taken 30+ and been POTY.

What could’ve been with Maxis test career. Bloody shame. My kids will be flying to play cricket in NSW and coming back home to VIC the next day. Might as well give them the best chance to make it for Australia.

Suggests we’ll probably play two pacers right? Seems weird to include three genuine pace bowlers just to play one, especially considering it’s a short test tour. If Head does open, I wonder who’ll play at 5

Hearing McSweeney may gazump all of the other contenders. Has George been shamed into a back flip?

Reckon Connolly is best suited to white ball. And as for picking him as an all rounder, forget it as he is yet to take a first class wicket. Has he even bowled an over.

Handscomb is a baffling selection. Yet to even tour Sri Lanka, plus has a poor record in India. My choice for his spot was Josh Philippe who at least has shown his ability against sub cont spinners. I think I read Tim Paine too had called for his inclusion.
Early days but he's averaging over 60 in FC cricket.

Philippe is so bad as a keeper
Disagree. Is doing a good job with his new state with gloves and bat. Has Inglis ever played against sub cont spinners, Philippe has for Aust A and murdered them. A joy to watch his footwork and stroke play off the turning ball.

Surely CA aint picking a bloke for Test cricket after only four FC games spread over two seasons. There are guys that have put in five seasons of hard grind that far more deserve a Test debut over Connolly.

The selectors have got it pretty much spot on IMO.

Talk of dropping Konstas was ludicrous.

Same Maxwell who has played how many FC games this summer? He can't stay fit mate, and it is a tour we need to blood some youth why would we go back to a bloke that isn't in the mix long term

He is still awful, and Inglis is way better

Yep agree. Now put Khawaja at 3, Lab 4, Smith 5 and Beau at 6. Open with Konstas and Head.

Must be Adam White from SEN behind the keyboard.

Adam went as far to say the other day that Maxwell would be in the team for Sri Lanka if we needed to win for the World Championships but as as our place is secured he would be left out.
