Eddie Betts : Who will he be remembered playing for for?

This conversation is very specific to the individual, but in Eddie Betts' case, I honestly think he'll be more remembered as a Crow, and that's simply because of his level of play for them. Don't get me wrong, he was an exciting player at Carlton, but he wasn't a fully fledged superstar of the competition until he went to Adelaide.

It's different with all players though. Take Chris Judd for example; he is remembered equally as an Eagles AND Blues player, due to the fact that he achieved great things at both clubs. At the Eagles he won a Brownlow medal, and got them a Premiership, and while the ultimate success of a Premiership didn't quite happen at Carlton, he still won another Brownlow while with them, and was at the peak of his powers for the majority of his time there too.

To use a couple of Richmond examples, look no further than Jay Schulz and Ivan Maric.

Schulz is a guy who, despite spending the same amount of time with Richmond as he did with Port Adelaide (7 seasons at each club), he will always be remembered more as a Port Adelaide player, due to having his breakout years as a player while at that club.

Likewise with Big Ivan, who despite spending about half of his career at the Crows, only truly established himself as one of the premier ruckmen of the competition after coming over to the Tigers.

Exactly.
Judd will be remembered as an Eagles and Carlton player. He was brilliant for both footy clubs.
Correction. Judd will be remembered as a WCE & Carlton player AND a Visy ambassador

I think Eddie is already seen/remembered as a Crow over a Blue by neautrals. His highlight reel in the past few years is phenomenal.

Of the others, Danger will be/is a Cat – no small part that (similar to Eddie) he bleeds Geelong and always wanted to get there. If he’d stayed at Adelaide for another year or two, achieved the Brownlow and possible Premiership then it’ll be different.

Of the Ex Crows, Bernie Vince I think I see him as a Demon now, but funnily Big Ivan I still see as a Crow and its been ages n ages since he left!, guess I don't watch Richmond much.

It's understandable as a Crows fan that you still see Ivan as a Crow, but I think Carlton fans still see Betts as a Blue too. Point being that when it comes to our favourites that leave, the bias is always gonna be there, so it's best to judge based on the neutrals reactions, and I would say that the vast majority of people would think of Ivan as a Tiger more than a Crow.

I'll always see Matt White as a Tiger, because I quite liked what he did for us, despite him probably being more remembered as a Power player at this point.

Just as the vast majority of the neutrals see Betts as being a Crow before they see him as a Blue.

Shaun Burgoyne is a genuine 50/50. 150+ games and flags at both clubs.

I think that you'll find the only reason Shaun would sway towards Port at all is because his brother played with us. I feel like he's more of a hawk now.

As for the thread title, the Crows by a long way IMO, because at the Crows he's become genuinely elite and he appears to be enjoying his footy a lot more.

How about Gary Ablett Junior? An interesting question.

Tony Lockett was named in the Saints' and Swans' TOC, if memory serves me right

Paul Salmon too, though most would view him as a Bombre.

Love the nod after he answers like "Yeah, pretty sure that's right."

Scratch the head, tilt and nod... not much going on in there.

Ablett played all his finals and premierships at Geelong. Has more AFL mvps at Geelong than Gold Coast. 196 games at Geelong. He will struggle to get to 100 at Gold Coast. And Ablett is moving back to Geelong as soon as he retires.

I'd say before he retires

I'm one Crow fan that disagrees with this. Here are my reasons for this;
1. The controversy did not affect his final year for us. He gave his best and won our B&F.
2. His reasons for leaving were valid, I don't think anyone can argue with that.
3. He told the club of his decision 2 weeks before the finals which gave the club ample time to start negotiations with Geelong before the trade period.
Some Crows fans lump PD in the same bracket as Tippet. I think that's quite unfair.
Tiprat was a dog. He hadn't even told the AFC his intentions 2 days into the trade period. AFC had to force him to make a decision.
Compared to Tiprat he handled his departure very well IMO.
Danger was a gentleman compared to Tippett.
The day before the final against the Swans he met with them at their hotel, and then played the worst game of his life as the Swans win the game.

The interesting thing will be what will Betts himself regard as his team.
I know first hand that he was ripped apart when he left Carlton. He was devistated when they told him they had no interest in coming anywhere near Adelaides offer.
He always had said his blood runs blue.

I think he genuinely felt that way when he left, but he's currently the biggest cult hero in Adelaide since Modra, and he's also gone from an inconsistent player at Carlton to the best crumbing forward the competition has seen in some time, winning 2 AA guernseys.

I'd be very surprised if he wasn't enjoying his life in Adelaide a lot more than he did before the move.

I remember reading something about Betts helping to build schools or something overseas in the off season? Doing it on his own time? I didn't pay much attention to the story at the time but I think now hopefully he'll not only be remembered as an A class footballer but also an A class bloke. He may be a show off on the field (good on him I say) but he also seems like a ripper person as well.

I think he has no regrets about jumping ship now. More team and personal success then he was going to get at Carlton.

Betts played his best footy for Adelaide so naturally he will be remembered for that.

What I don't get however is now he is viewed as such a revered figure who neutrals seem to love, yet at Carlton he was a tool who wore baggy shorts. The flip in public perception over him is unprecedented, even though he hasn't changed the way he plays at all he is just now more consistent.
Our guernsey's better looking

Its funny that nearly everyone has mentioned the club that the player played for second is the one they will most be remembered for with Gary Ablett being the exception.
