Ahhhhh Gary Lyon 2008?

"The symbolism of today shouldn't be lost on anyone," Lyon said.

"I think you will enjoy the fact that whilst tonight is the rebirth of this great footy club, our greatest rival is in disarray.

"The Collingwood footy club is going down the plughole as the Melbourne footy club re-establishes itself as a power."

2 years later we were premiers. :)
So you're saying I should go and get a Collingwood Premiers 2018 tattoo?

Jacksons Comments were correct but should have kept his mouth shut. Especially with a side that has had no success since jesus was a boy.

The succession was not a smooth one. Anyone without rose coloured glasses could see that.

Ed was always going to fire back.

That's our point of difference. I think he did need to on this occasion. My opinion is based on the narrative around the transition being consistently written in a way to slag off our club, so I'm glad that it gets challenged.

Correct it is exactly where we differ. I also didn't see at as slagging us off I saw it as a true and accurate statement because, IMO, it hasn't gone to plan with the incumbent hanging on by a thread...

Ed was spot on. Why shouldn't we fire back?

Why was he spot on? Why should we have fired back? I've already answered why not.

People's opinion on things will always differ and I'm over Ed making the news throigh his tongue and not his actions!

This demonstrates the folly of making Big Statements and Grand Predictions, which our own club is regularly guilty of. I prefer the humble and modest approach myself, coupled with smashing sides on the field of play.
I have no issues with big statements or grand predictions. Clubs should aim high, and do it publicly. At least that gives them extra motivation to succeed and not end up looking foolish. But public schadenfraude is where they should draw the line. Last time it happened, as shown above, it spectacularly backfired on them. Looks like the lesson wasn't learned the first time.

We can't have a club like Melbourne having a crack at us without a response. Simple matter of pride.

I am usually in the boat of wanting Eddie to stay quiet.

But when it is footy related, and more specifically Collingwood-related, then i have no problem him defending the club- whilst also pointing out financial handouts that some of these other clubs have needed to stay afloat.

Simple in my eyes Sco!

Disrespect should never be tolerated especially from a piss ant Club like Melbourne!

Why not? Some criticisms require a response, some may even warrant at attack back in return. This required neither, it was a cheap shot that now becomes about Eddie. It does appear Eddie can't take anything that appears to criticise him and is a push a button get a reaction kinda guy.

The statement was true and accurate to a point, but unneccessary and provocative. Be happy about what your clubs done right, and don't take shots at other clubs, especially given that what their club did 'right' required heavy intervention from the AFL in the first place after a series of massive **** ups way beyond Collingwoods errors in their succession plans.

Sigh. Sometimes it's a good strategy to ignore the jibes and provocations. Rise above it and all that. Be statesmanlike. Just sayin...
Nah, give em hell. Its the off season. We're not all shrinking violets

To all you posters that are so quick to criticise Eddie cause you think that's the popular thing to do that makes you one of the cool kids, take a breath... and read the article again.

Ed was absolutely Bang on.

How dare we have a President that stands up against ill directed sledging!

Hats off to ya Ed...

This time, absolutely spot on.

Agree. Easy for the media to wind up Eddie & sit back & watch him hang himself. Very predictable is our ED. Wonder how the rest of the board feel about his outburst? It's all very well to defend the club, but he always goes a hell of a lot further than that.

It really comes down to individual interpretation. Personally I am happy with Ed's response and think is was totally justified.

I have no problem him defending our club. But the counter attacks are always what make me cringe. He went a lot further going back the other way then what was warranted.

I've been critical of some of Ed's outbursts in the past but I reckon he nailed it this time. We can't have a basket case like Melbourne having cracks at us. Without the AFL they would be extinct. F@ck 'em!

It's easy enough to respond with a calm methodical politeness.

Could have easily been in measured tone:
We congratulate Melbourne on their New coach, and particularly thank Paul Roos for his greater contribution to football.
Our own club is looking forward to the future and we are confident with our team and coach to deliver the ultimate in good time.
Who knows maybe one year it will be the old rivals Collingwood v Melbourne in the ultimate game.
