It's easy enough to respond with a calm methodical politeness.

Could have easily been in measured tone:
We congratulate Melbourne on their New coach, and particularly thank Paul Roos for his greater contribution to football.
Our own club is looking forward to the future and we are confident with our team and coach to deliver the ultimate in good time.
Who knows maybe one year it will be the old rivals Collingwood v Melbourne in the ultimate game.

I'm glad he didn't say that. We are Collingwood, the rest can please themselves!

Hitting them hard with some home truths is better though

Agree, they got CEO paid for by the AFL, a subsidised coach by the AFL, sacked a coach that was asked to throw games and they have the gall to brag?

Not sure if I could have kept my mouth shut if I was Eddie. I despise Melbourne more than any other club!!!!!!

I have quite a Few Clubs I hate more then Melbourne but Guess I am too young to know the hate for Melbourne

Correct it is exactly where we differ. I also didn't see at as slagging us off I saw it as a true and accurate statement because, IMO, it hasn't gone to plan with the incumbent hanging on by a thread...

There seems to be many victims of the rewriting of history on this issue.

I have no issues with big statements or grand predictions. Clubs should aim high, and do it publicly. At least that gives them extra motivation to succeed and not end up looking foolish. But public schadenfraude is where they should draw the line. Last time it happened, as shown above, it spectacularly backfired on them. Looks like the lesson wasn't learned the first time.

So Maybe ED is not FIT to be President of the Club then

Nah, just inflames situation and makes a certain club president sound like a tosser.
But if that's the outcome wants, fair enough.
Mentioning the Sheedy thing, it's way too thin skinned and childish, in my opinion.

I'm glad he didn't say that. We are Collingwood, the rest can please themselves!
Best answer is dignity, then win more games
:)
But that's me. Dignified behaviour works better in my view.

They are No.1 for me mainly because of some very bad experiences with their supporters that started at the 1990 GF and they way they bagged Brown.

I was up for the fight if I didn't have my daughter with me.:p

I fully expected to read the article and be annoyed at Eddie, but I'm not at all.

Melbourne's hierarchy have a habit of trying to pick a faux fight with us to stir up their own meagre supporter base. Styne did it, Lyon did it and Jackson's doing it. Piggybacking off our club and trying to rekindle a rivalry that died decades ago.

This is footy. It's entertainment, it's theatre, it's passionate and it's fun.

If you bite, Eddie bites back. Jackson knew that. It gets headlines, and Melbourne don't get headlines. Eddie and Sheeds made an art form of it for years.

As a bonus, in this case Eddie is absolutely right.

It really comes down to individual interpretation. Personally I am happy with Ed's response and think is was totally justified.
Nice reply.

A lot of posters are stating "we can't take this from a club like Melbourne", or words to that effect. Who should we take it from? The point seems to be Melbourne are shite so we shouldn't put up with sledging from them. Think about it in schoolyard terms, because this is pretty much the level of what is going on. When the little kid a couple of grades lower than you has a go, the best response is to laugh and ignore or use a witty but subtle put down. When the kid a grade or two above has a go, that is when you stand up and give it whatever it takes. A kindergarden kid took a swipe at us and Ed reacted as if we care, as if we are vulnerable whereas it would have been so easy for Ed to laugh and produce a one line put down.

In which sense? It was a two part plan. Part one, tick. Part two, cross. Therefore no concerns with Jackson's statement given only Collingwood people consider it a success.

If you dont like it then go barrack for another team, anyone criticising Ed defending our team needs think twice or move on!

I dont always agree with what the Pies do but always defend my team

Haha good one! To reiterate I like it even less now that I've read your opinion on it.

Your analogy sucks just like the Melbourne Football Club.

Now its your turn.........is that how it's should be done or not?

I don't agree with the school analogy. As far as I'm concerned Melbourne deserved a slap and got one. Well played Ed!

Well Bad Fans Experince's are reason to hate Then. I really hate Hawks,Saints and Eagles Fans

Have you ever met Ed?
Nope. Seen him walk past over many years.
Just talking about this episode.
Ed may or may not be a great bloke. Don't know, actually don't care either way.
Does many good things for us.
Also can go off the ranch in my view to easily. But that's his way.
I'd be differen, but thats him, I accept it and have moved on with acceptance that's his way.
I even watch hot seat and enjoy that. Don't listen to mmm but never liked their style.

That's right 'sometimes'...other times it requires standing up to things. I am happy he did on this occasion.
Yep - have to say I'm fine with this crack back.
Melbourne seem very happy with themselves for a team that haven't even got back in the eight yet.

I think in some ways Eddie sees himself as a salesman. A promoter even, in the boxing sense. When there's ever a chance to massage a rivalry he'll take it. He knows that's where a lot of money is made in Foosball. Fans are more interested in games where there something more on the line. If he can get a situation where fans of both clubs want to see the other go down in the next match, and neutrals are interested for the similar reasons, it's a win win for both clubs. More tickets, more ratings, better sponsors.

I am usually in the boat of wanting Eddie to stay quiet.

But when it is footy related, and more specifically Collingwood-related, then i have no problem him defending the club- whilst also pointing out financial handouts that some of these other clubs have needed to stay afloat.
This.
