I don't think he intended his comment as a racial slur and it obviously isn't when you listen to it. Written down it looks terrible. Of course written comments lack all the emotion and inflection of the spoken word. Apologizing just admits guilt.
The fallout of this is that I have to instruct my 9-y-o never to speak about or document anyone's physical features in case it is misconstrued.

Yes, countless times I have heard of aboriginals, and Africans referred to as apes and monkeys.

Ever seen those racist cartoons from a century ago? In Australian magazines like The Bulletin? Some people still think it's amusing to decorate their bar at home with them. I saw some just recently. All these quaint little 19th century etchings of half-man, half-beasts running around and saying silly things.

I've heard Monkey before, never Ape though, and i went to a high school with a large % of Aboriginals, i've heard the term used to describe African Americans on Tele, but i've never heard it regarding Aboriginals, everywhere's different though i suppose.
