First ever #1 Draft pick out of the EDFL and the Hillside FC. Worth a mention I think. Well done, Cam.

Didn't he last play in the EDFL for Douttas. Surely they deserve a mention. Also Noah Balta at pick 25. Saw him play a senior game against Avondale as a 16 year old and was in the best.

Two planks. Cam played the majority of his junior footy at Hillside especially his younger years. I think Hillside should get the credit here. I think it’s wrong that Douttas name gets a mention on Cams junior footy. Yes he played a few years at Douttas but many more years he played for Hillside. Give Hillside some credit pal.

From what I saw he was quality before he went to Douttas, although noting his awards while there is fine. Pity the 18.5 GF wasn't on video. Was something else.

I looked everywhere on You Tube but couldn't find it. Ive been telling people for 3 years it was the best performance I had seen in a junior footy grand final.

I fully understand that but I also think it's equally as unfortunate that EDS never get a mention although it's the last club he played at in the EDFL.

Serious question, why did the AFL not mention junior clubs this year when announcing a drafted player. All we heard was the SANFL, WAFL or TAC club.

Totally disagree with you here. Yes he was good at Hillside but certainly not a world beater. At Douttas his skill was allowed to grow as he was surrounded by others with similar talent (Caluzzi, Balta, Brookes, Martin, Klaromenos, Sir) meaning he didn't have to do all the work and be everywhere. That U18 grand final was where we really saw his talent. The most dominating 30 minutes of football I have seen.

I think it is about time the EDFL start to video every grand final. they can then sell copies to whoever wants one.

Absolutely. I have a 2014 GF dvd, but only because Haddy used to do their games.

Hillside would get them as he got a clearance back to them from Douttas at the start of this season.

I would think the club where he played 40 junior games would get it.

He was a stand out junior at an early age from what I hear. This is from his early coaches and of course his own efforts. It was great to see him return and gain a clearance back to his junior club so they get the credit and acknowledgement they deserve..

I guess playing in the GF at div1 level juniors was a telling move as well but that was his own ability and the skills he learnt from an early age..

At 16 level it’s all about game plans, structures and set ups not developing their skills and talent as they either have it or they don’t by that age.,

I’m not sure how you disagree with me because In the past there has been a lot of discussion about kids moving clubs at ages 16 and above and the reasons some move..

Agreed,
EDS, Keilor, Abers etc get plenty of recognition as is for their development of the young fellas.
It's good for Hillside to get some recognition as well.

I disagreed with you because EDS shouldn't be mentioned at all.
He had the ability before he went to EDS but as I said, because of the others around him he was allowed to play his game and try not to be everywhere.

Don't get me wrong I am certainly glad Hillside will get recognition. The club do a great job and I can't say a bad word about it.

All good lads and good conversation.

Just on a similar topic what do you think of a case where a young player is recruited to a club in his later junior years (maybe 1 or 2 years) and gets drafted. I know this club will get the recognition as his registrated there but I’m not sure that’s a fair judgement as the club he might have played at from 9s to 15s/17s played a bigger part in his development..Especially now with the points system which is creating some some underhanded things going on..

I do understand the rule that you must play 40 games to be a 1 pointer and kids with draft expectations will usually be playing TAC so won’t play 40 games unless they are recruited at maybe 15..

Thoughts??

Looking back at that EDS side from 2015 can you imagine how good they would have been if Roumeliotis and Palombo had not done ACL's that season. With those two included, a team that could have beaten any u16 team in Australia. Even without them they were certainly impressive.

To your question, I am sure it happens but I think younger players move to either seek success or play with mates.
Rayner would of moved for the success that Hillside was never going to provide him. The same as Bytel did when he moved to Abbers.

If players are that good that they will play TAC as a bottom ager they will need to have moved to a club as a 13 year old to be able to get the 40 games either that or play games at a higher age group as well as their own.

Unless a player is outstanding as a 11 to 14 year old I don't think there is that much difference in ability at that age. The real development occurs between 15 to 17 when body changes really kick in. Look at Romero, he was a good junior but when other boys started to match his body size and pace he fell back to the pack.

Is it fair that the club that may have developed someone up to a point where they can get recognised for rep football and then move to another club, then get drafted and the second club get the credit, no it's not fair. The real credit comes where the player recognises where credit is due. Hence Rayner's move back to Hillside. I also doubt that EDS mind that he did move back as he helped them win two flags.

Turdo I really don't understand you, if Rayner played at Pacco you would be all over him. He came to Douttas to hopefully play in a premiership which he did twice. He won a best in comp and two best on grounds in the grand finals. Douttas should get the credit they deserve.

Nice article on the EDFL website which mentions both clubs and on the EDFL facebook page both clubs are acknowledged. Pretty fair I think.

Either way it's a fabulous achievement. Congrats to Noah Balta on getting drafted too.
