Have just heard that big Mal may be looking to coach Northern Saints next season with Caruso's staying put.

The Press Release from Abers on Mal's departure:
Dear Abers Community,

Yesterday Monday 15th September, Mal Michael confirmed with our Senior Football President, John Larkins that he was standing down as senior coach of the Aberfeldie Senior Football Club.

Due to John being in transit to Canada for his son Pat’s wedding to Aggie this Saturday, I have been delegated to brief you all. Speaking on behalf of John, it is my pleasure from all the Abers football community that I thank Mal for his wonderful commitment and enormous contribution to help develop the Abers football brand both on and off the playing arena.

As a family club and a family man, we all understand that raising a family at times must take precedence in work and life balance. We are delighted that Mal will now have the time required to give to his young family that as a parent, we all know we must invest.

In Mal’s time at Aberfeldie, he has carved out an enormous legacy, one that will live on for a very long time. Mal’s commitment to his role as a player and secondly as a coach can only be respected and commended. His application to both roles, the values that we want to become second nature at Abers, he lived and breathed, those being honesty, integrity, passion, commitment, caring and most importantly, one that his legacy would live on and give Abers the important building block to allow our club to go from good to great.

Mal from day one bought into our culture, bought into our junior pathway program, and at every opportunity promoted internal development, that is so important in our goal of creating a sustainable football business that will allow Abers to remain in Premier Division and be competitive at all levels, as shown on the weekend, 3 teams all given the opportunity to win Grand Finals.

Mal did not have an ego, which after an extraordinary cherished football career, including 4 grand finals on the MCG (three winning) is outstanding. One of Mal’s great accomplishments was that to grow and develop a successful culture, you must have committed players, who do not have egos, this he demonstrated time and again in making very tough calls in educating not only the playing list but supporters and committee members, which after two years has evolved our playing culture substantially.

Mal has confirmed he will always be a “Gorilla”, he loves our club and we love him. We do look forward to having Mal visit as regularly as possible in the coming years and thank him from the bottom of our hearts for getting Abers to not only back to back grand finals, but installing true values and traits into the Abers culture that will allow us to move forward with our business goal and allow Abers in many years to come be able to reflect on these two amazing development years under senior coach Mal Michael.

We wish Mal and his family good luck and best wishes from the Abers committee, players, fellow coaches, sponsors, supporters and the whole broader Abers community.

Yours Sincerely,

ANTHONY DANIHER
Director of Football.

Would be a massive get and working hand in hand with the Caruso's could be just what the Doctor ordered. I do hope it happens as the club has had to work through lots of challenges. Good Luck to them. And for what it's worth, the Caruso's wouldn't be going anywhere. They've been there, done that and it appears to me they want to bring the club to the next phase and that is make a splash at the top end of the ladder. Whether they can do it or not remains to be seen but someone like Mal would be a great get and could do some good things at that club.

I watched the GF and felt that big Mal needed to cover the Strathmore backs a bit better as Abers had plenty of forward forays in that last 30 odd minutes of play, but kept on kicking the ball to an outnumbered forward line. Not many times that 1 can beat 2. Congrats to Strathmore.

Thought getting in some top tier players would have been money better spent for the saints instead of an off field coach

If the inference here is that Abers didn't get a result on the weekend because they had a team of "mercanaries" as against a group that played to win for the club I would suggest is crap.
A lot of talk abt abt pay pkts which I would have thought becomes irrelavent when you cross the white line.
On Sat I saw two teams having a crack and it was a little hard to guess who was getting paid what.

I'm totally suggesting the above, for two years abers have not played like a team on grand final day, they are individuals and the reason being is that the club spends too much $$$ on blokes who have purely gone there for the $$$

so they lost by two points because they pay the players too much, really.

Reimers had a poor game, didn't get many touches. He kicked a goal, but Douglas kept him well under control.

Think reimers did a calf in the opening minutes - pretty much his first contest. May have taken it into the game. From that point he couldn't run, change direction etc. Abers then unbalanced in the forward line.

Strathmore far better on the day - should have shut the door in the opening qtr but couldn't get it between the big sticks.

Fair comment, didn't realise Reimers had been carrying injury.

Went and had a look at NFL grand final between Heidelberg and Greensborough. First time I'd watched an NFL game. Big crowd, on a par with the EDFL grand final. With my seniors discount paid $10 including record, as distinct from EDFL $17. Able to get heavy beer too. Interesting to go and watch other comps occasionally.

Entertaining game but a bit one sided as Greensborough won by about 7 goals. Didn't think the intensity, pressure or standard was quite up to the EDFL GF, although seemed to be more free flowing. Nowhere near as many high profile players. Only players I knew were Paul Bower ex Carlton and Michael Hooper eX OAk Park ( who won medal for B.O.G. )

I see the EDFL tribunal has taken the lead from the AFL relating to Grand Final suspensions - Grima 6, Houli 4 and Hille 10 weeks. What number was Hille?

Hille, as you probably already know is Strathmore's assistant coach. Not excusing his actions as he clearly must have gone over the top to cop 10 weeks. Not sure if he went for abusing the umpires or other officials, but I can understand his frustration. I thought the performance of 2 of the 3 umpires was pretty good. I, along with many Strathmore people thought that the performance of the other umpire was a disgrace.

A subsequent viewing of the grand final on The telecast has only re-inforced my view.
If Aberfeldie had managed to get up I have no doubt that this umpire would have been immediately elevated to the Abers Hall of Fame as a Living Legend.

I realise that there is nothing to say that the free kicks have to be even, and also that genuine umpiring mistakes do occur in a game. However the huge disparity in free kicks paid by one umpire to each side in 50/50, or even 30/70 situations was totally beyond the pale. Many of the decisions or non decisions had a decisive impact. I would love to know the actual statistics.

Strathmore won the match, and deservedly so against a valiant Aberfeldie. There have been no complaints or excuses from Abers. I nevertheless believe the winning margin would have been greater if all umpires had performed to the same high standard.

Did the players get reported on the day or from a review of video evidence? Having watched Grima bang one fair on the button of Josh Toy with the umpire standing 2 feet away it did not appear that a report was made there and then....

I think they got reported by the field umpire on the day, when Houli got Grima I had never seen a head snap back like grima's did, I think he would still have whip lash, poor bloke couldn't get out of there quick enough, funny to watch! Like a scared little boy! And then on they way off T.Hislop gives him another lesson on how to throw em and Grima's head was wobbling like the dog on a cars back parcel shelf! Maybe a few sessions at fitafex over pre season for Todd Couldn't Box Apples Grima

Don't think Grima could give a toss as to your opinion of his boxing prowess. After all he's the one with the premiership medallion. You talk with such authority on boxing though that I suspect Roger the dodger is really an alias for Marvin Hagler.

Maybe Josh Toy would be the best person to ask if Grima can throw a decent punch. After all, he was the one on all fours for about a minute with his nose splattered across his face.

No worries keyboard warrior! Toy got hit trying to break it up, pretty easy to hit a sitting duck! Maybe we should ask the doctor who stitched Grima up if he could box? Let's ask the trainer who had to tape his face up like a piñata if he can box? Are you serious about asking people? I was there I saw it lol. Anyway some big news down at the mighty jets land with some early signings, good to see we are not sitting on our hands! Go Jets!

Don't think anyone has ever given much credence to your opinions before, so not sure why we should start now. Pretty academic now as to whether Grima is in the same class as such an "expert" as yourself, he's the one with the well deserved premiership medallion. You can brood about that for the next 6 months.
