Toast Elimination Final vs Doggies Review - How The Heck Did We Win That?

What a game.
I started watching at 1/4 time live then watched the 1st 1/4 on replay - can recommend :) .

1st 1/4 we had our chances but didn't take them and the Bullies took theirs, plus the umpires looked like they were overcompensating for home ground noise - they had a poor night and didn't handle the occasion at all well, learn and grow as they say.

Half way into the 2nd qtr and, as Billy Butcher would say, it was looking " F$#%^g diabolical", but cometh the hour, cometh the fwd, Sonny got the ball rolling and we were away.

Anyway,
The backs - An absolute unit of a Unit. Just a wall, none of the dog's fwds looked like threatening apart from bont and he got locked down as well. Pearce, Young, Chapman, Ryan and Cox exceptional.
Fwds - Walters brilliant, commentators were saying 25 goals from 11? finals before today, now 28 from 12, Warrior confirmed.
- Amiss- 6 marks, could have had 4 goals and just did fwd things. Lobb stayed strong.
Mids - Brayshaw and Serong were brilliant, I don't think there is anyone quicker at getting the ball to boot than Serong, left or right. Brayshaw immense.
Thought big Sean's game was one of his best this year, really competed and jumped well at centre bounce.
Acres 2 way running was great, I'm often perplexed by Blake but his defensive efforts and his ability to keep good width for outlets was great.
I'm surprised Noddy only got the 11 possessions but his goal was worth another 10.

A great experience for the team and to dig themselves out of the hole was amazing to watch.

Bullies
  • They managed to block or deflect a lot of our handballs in the 1st qtr, looks like they did some homework there.
  • I'm glad Smith and Treloar can't kick.

As you commented on the first with missed opportunities.

Darcey recieved a handball and lobbed it over Amiss head when he was on a perfect lead. If he hit Amiss out infront and Amiss kicked it from 45 out then WB may not have had such a big run on in the first quarter. Amiss had a few good leads after and Freo players chose to hit the top of the square instead.

The game could have been much different before that big come back.

The dogs must be spewing too.

Me too
Good times

Yup, I feel hungover, watched the replay to 1am, no voice and little sleep

Dog doesn’t give a **** I’ve been up - she wants her walk

Still a absolutely buzzing after last night - being there with that crowd is something I won’t forget, and it matched the Sydney game IMO at subi, with the difference here coming back from so far back

My mate who I went with said we would come back - I 100% thought we were gone and was in preservation mode.

He'll be a leader, a star and an AA one day himself but I'd stick with Brayshaw as the next captain. The consistency he's shown this year has been huge.
For me it's that Brayshaw is elite in the 1%s that make a far bigger impact when leading from the front. Serong will always he a great Vice and the one-two punch of amazing leaders will hold us in great stead and both player's games would probably lift with the added responsibility but Brayshaw is just the hardest worker in the league by some margin. He's the one I'd be hoping players are taking their example from (not that Serong isn't a great worker and I'd have him perhaps second only to Brayshaw.)

It's a nice argument to be able to have which is the best thing about this. It's kind of the Football equivalent of the nerd argument "Who would win in a fight: Superman or Goku?". You can't be wrong either way

Yep, I haven't watched the replay yet but in the first term (and early second) when everything was going to crap he was the player who was right in it and giving it his all, he just needed the team to come with him.

And thank **** they did eventually

I was in the brayshaw captain camp, but serong is a year younger. Look at the leap in form and leadership brayshaw made this season. Who knows how good serong is next year.

A personal Thing. I donot know whether you guys will be in this forum. Thank you guys who was around me yesterday at Optus. I missed my daughter yesterday at stadium for sometime and you guys helped us along with the Optus stadium staff to reunite us........ Thank you:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:
I was in Freo cheering squad area sec 130

It’s a good morning. Question is do you start the replay from the 20min mark 2nd quarter or tough it out from the start?
I wanna see if the umpiring in the first quarter was as bad as I thought

Dogs were getting away with those handball / throws they were notorious for in their GF finals series

And as noted, we didn’t get a call at all… any 50/50 one went against us.. even the 90/10 we deserved such as holding the obvious ball was called play on

Incredibly infuriating. And the crowd let them know it

Just watching the replay now we looked ok for most of the first half but couldn't buy a goal. Lobb / Walters bad goal kicking, then turnovers by hand and foot killing any momentum we had building. The kick ins were also not going well, coming straight back in a bit.

At the game I think I had 2013 PTSD when we were 40+ points down and Amiss kicked it into the post from right in front of goals.

6 minutes left in the second we have missed every shot at goal, score is 42 to 3 , how on earth did we turn this around. Wowee

There were a lot of throws.

Through the worst of the hangover, voice gone, finished the two hour drive home and still somewhat terrified that it was all some sort of dream.

  • I don't think we'll ever get a more in depth exhibition of the best and worst this side is capable of delivering.
  • Listening to some of the comments from the boys post-match, I think the horror start was genuinely a case of them being a bit overawed by the occasion, and getting mugged by the dogs as a result, rather than being out and out asleep at the wheel (like the Giants game.)
  • Watching from the stands, Young was my immediate snap-judgement BOG, with just how good Serong and Andy were rung home more by watching the replay. Stemmed the worst of the defensive bleeding and was, IMO, our best four-quarter performer.
  • Aish was excellent and particularly critical in the second half.
  • Not sure how it was where everyone else was, but the support for Jye (even after that poster) was incredibly wholesome. The belief he'll hopefully draw from last night is immeasurable.
  • Sonny finding his mojo again continues to be one of the low key best things about this season.
  • I know some people questioned Justin's focus on player wellbeing and the mental/psychological side of things earlier in his tenure - but I feel like being able to do what we did last night is the sum total of that time and investment. We would have curled up in a collective ball and let them kick the shit out of us four years ago.
