Why did the AFL simply not impose a forfeit to Melbourne if Essendon could not field a team due to a player testing positive for Covid-19?

This is the truth here.
The AFL tends to baby Essendon and protect them for the consequences of their actions. We've seen it happen through the PED saga and now we've seen it with two of their players refusing to follow Covid-19 guidelines.
I believe the conspiracy runs so deep within the AFL that my earlier thread on this matter was deleted today.

It's bullshit that Melbourne are forced to play a mid week game because of Essendon's incompetence and one of their players breaking the rules.

Our opponents Melbourne had two players suspended for breaching protocols. But yeah it's just Essendon.
What should have club done then?
Hope this happens to another club so you know what it's like.

Because punishing clubs and players for having positive tests (which, let's face it, is largely outside their control) is a sure way of encouraging clubs and players to try and hide things.
They mightn't be successful (although I wouldn't put it past them to try), but even having them try would be a pain in the arse.
Punishing successful tests, and you need to start getting hardcore on missing/fudging tests and before long we're talking gatorade in a urine test levels of stupidity, with all the extra testing, enforcement, judgments and punishments required to keep that in line.
Far easier to treat positive tests as something to work on together and minimise the impact on the club (if not always the player) and ensure cooperation, not just compliance.

And a 9 month wait to make it, seems legit.
Rubbish comment 2 demons were Suspended for breaking rules for all we know they missed catching the virus by a whisker off a contaminated person, so blame your boys too

The two Melbourne players told the club straight away and didn't train with the main group, Essendon tried to cover it up but a positive test exposed them
Massive difference, if you can't see that then that says more about you than anything else
Now Melbourne pays because of them which is bullshit. I bet if it was Richmond being forced to play 3 games in 7 days you'd feel different
