Roast Essendon in no mans land

Most of us are under no illusions at tge state of the club currently. It’s going to take several years to get rid of the stench of Dodoro. He has crippled the club list and it will take time to repair. We really need to cut this list hard and start by finishing bottom this year. Need to somehow get 5-6 picks on the first couple of rounds. I’d be happy with a genuine fire sale

The fact they can be labelled a big club these days is just a laugh. Mark Robinson kept them relevant during his drunk ramblings but aside from that they are actually irrelevant this century bar cheating via supplements.

They are actually absolutely nowhere. Have to be up there with St Kilda as one of the poorest run organisations in the AFL. The fact a club like Hawthorn could turn themselves into genuine premiership material in two seasons after a bit of rebuild just shows the chasm between good clubs and very bad ones.

Well neither club voted themselves out of existence unlike the Dees, so I guess we’ve got that going for us ?

Genuinely assumed when I saw Dylan Shiel playing half back that they're tanking for picks. No sane person does that.

What do you mean? It has been a while since Shiel was consistently good in the midfield. So he is being tried in a different position.

I think he's been over the hill for a while now. Need to give the spot to a youth who will give what Shiel is giving plus the upside of development.

It will always be bizarre to me how ineffectual Essendon have been over the past 25 years.

They were THE Powerhouse when I was a kid - just a limitless pipeline of talent and toughness.

They're a long way off it at the moment, as has been the case for a while now - Geelong fans are no stranger to that famine.

The Bombers teams of yore always had very good big men - and very good little men.
This Essendon team looks nowhere near it.

I blame that heck Dudoro he has crippled our club for the past 15 years going to take Rosa a few drafts and list culls to remove the stench

There just doesn't seem to be a lot to get excited about. They have some nice players who are in their early twenties like Caldwell but they're also very vanilla. Caddy and Kako will go ok. I think they're going to continue to struggle for a while and I'm here for it.

Definitely in a bad place, but I saw the VFL yesterday and Rosas pulled 6 players with more natural talent in one draft than Dodoro did in 20 years, so future ain’t so bad, just going to take some time to mend. Feel for Merrett though.

bums on seats, $$ in memberships, eyes on TV screens, think you'll find that's why Essendon are still considered a big club

Shit on field and us idiots still support them when we know they will deliver mediocrity

Caddy hasn't look great in the 2 games in, maybe he is missing Stringer as support?

With Langford going down there is a lot of pressure on this kid, still got to be patient with him.
I like the look of Kako he seems to have settled into the Bombers nicely.
carrying something and is a second year KPF

dont worry, a lot of Essendon supporters are fed up with us chasing mediocrity like we do.

The fact we signed McGrath to a 6 year deal when no other club would likely have offered 4 shows just how poor the previous list management regime was.

The current football department helped land the Eagles 2020 flag so here's hoping they can make some tough calls and not let the heart strings pull on keeping players around longer than they deserve

the biggest issue going forward they are about to overpay Harley Reid by about 1 million to give their supporters some hope

they really need to hit the draft hard and rebuild from the bottom up

Teenage Players like Reid are the exact players you hit the draft hoping to find.

By trading for Reid your overpaying for certainty but it’s a perfectly justifiable stratergy if your content in your ability to find best 22 standard players in the later rounds and from other obscure places.

I mean Essendon just drafted/added Kako Clarke Gerryn Johnson Nguyen Unwin Day-Wicks and grabbed Edwards out of WA.

That’s 8 players and close to 20% of the list having not played an AFL game before the start of this season.

I’d say that’s hitting the draft pretty hard. I would also expect them to add someone else via MSD so along with Prior that’s 10 players and close to 25% turnover in 1 season.

The year previous they turned over about 6 players so that’s an almost 40% list turnover in 2 years.

This year they currently have 2 FRP, 2 SRP and a bunch of money.

That’s another 10% list turnover lined up before counting trades/free agents

Let’s say they turnover another 8-10 players with Goldy being the only one bought in under Rosa. You’d be looking at a 60% list turnover in 3 years and the majority of players still there from Pre Rosa being

Merrett Martin McGrath* Durham Ridley Redman Reid Langford Caldwell all of whom have shown to be pretty good.

That looks like bottoming out to me

This is the year 1AD.
Fist draft since that absolute cancer was cut from the club and I think Rosa has had a half decent start but will take several drafts to even start seeing a difference. Tassie coming in might even push that back a few years but I really hope we win the spoon this year and then cut the list hard. Trade out what we can and build through the draft. Let’s do it properly for once instead of the half arsed rebuilds and corner cutting we had under that shyster Dodoro.

Completely agree. The head of footy should of moved years ago. If Essendon has anyone 26 and above who has trade value they should be looking at it.

Besides the fact we've won finals, it feels like both Carlton and Essendon have been in that same sort of place of trying to replicate past successes but never really going anywhere. Feels like perhaps neither have really moved with the times fast enough in the modern era and always playing catch up.
