Essendon or Carlton - Who Will Win A Flag First?

fair question.

while the dones kids have looked reasonable this year, i think the blues 23 to 25 year old players are the ones that will be help the blues have a decnt crack at the next flag.

just wondring who have the bombers got in this age.
lloydy would 28 odd would he, and lucas not too far behind im guessing?

i just think the blues have two excellent players that should be around when the become contenders again.

Stevens and Fevola are a pretty good start.
how old is jason johnson?

it's hard to say who, but i cant see it happening for atlest 3 years.

27 each, from memory.
Our 22-25 bracket is probably our biggest weakness, thanks to draft penalties in 1999 and poor drafting in 2000-2001.

We have some very strong players from 26 up, and some very strong players from 22 down.

I think I could be right off here, but are you saying that you need to bottom out in order to win a flag by virtue of benefiting from high draft picks?

That we need to go backwards in order to go forwards?

Not at all

I'm saying that

ESSENDON LIST.

Age
27+ Great
22-26 - Poor
17-21 - Good Kids

When the 22-26 group become your senior players. Then you will hit rock bottom with a crash.

The worst is yet to come.

PS: For the record I haven't missed an Essendon home game in 3 years.

Lloyd, Lucas, J.Johnson are all 27.

Our 23-25 age group isn't all that flash, but some handy names there - Zantuck, Alvey, Cupido, Haynes, Hille, McVeigh, Peverill, Ramanauskas, Solomon.

McPhee and Welsh are 22, M.Johnson and Rioli are 26.

I don't think that will be the case.
When you look at Carlton's list in the 22-26 age group, only Whitnall, Fevola, Stevens, Teague, Waite stand out. Houlihan and Scotland are solid footballers. Chambers, Deluca, etc contribute, but aren't going to be stars. The rest, and I talk of Clarke, Morrell, Bowyer, Longmuir are battlers.

Essendon's group of Zantuck, Alvey, Cupido, Haynes, Hille, McVeigh, Peverill, Ramanauskas, Solomon doesn't look as good, but isn't all that bad.
There isn't a Fevola or Stevens there, but there are some very good footballers. Solomon came second in our B&F, Cupido may just have turned a corner and has all the talent in the world.
McVeigh made the Australian side last year, Hille is going to be a gun ruckman and Zantuck and Peverill are solid contributors.
Haynes is gone and Alvey needs to do more.

But just on the outskirts of that age bracket there is some serious talent. Rioli is Carlton's Whitnall. Very important players who can't quite get it right.
McPhee is a gem. Welsh is a gun
Laycock and Lovett are already winning us games and Bradley is a very good player.

Hird and Allan aside, we don't have anyone on our list that will retire in the next two years. Lucas and Lloyd will probably play at least 5 and Fletcher could easily play 3 or 4 more.

IMO it is McPhee, Laycock, Lovett, Welsh, Bradley that will fill the void when Hird retires. Not the 23-25 year olds. In three years time when this group has played 50-100 games, Carlton will still be bloody their replacements for Kouta, Camporeale, French, Lappin etc.

We have already started to find our next generation of players. I don't believe Carlton has.

When our current 23-25 year olds need to become our senior players, Lloyd and Lucas will still be going. Hille, Solomon and Ramanauskas will still be there. And Laycock, Bradley, Monfries, Lovett, Stanton, Welsh, McPhee will all have played 50-100+ games.

Talk of who's got the more talented 20-22 year olds means nothing when you compare them to what St Kilda, Hawthorn, Richmond, the Bulldogs and several other teams have.

Both sets of supporters will be waiting a while for their next flag.

Add Dyson and Watson to what list?

The one that includes Zantuck, Alvey , Hille and McVeigh? :D

Granted,
It's no Longmuir, Clarke, Johnson, McGrath, Prendergast, Deluca and Wiggins...but it's a start. All four of the above would get a game at Carlton.

DeLuca's three goals sunk Essendon and Sheedy's poor coaching cost them as he wasn't smart enough to move Fletcher onto him.

Deluca has spent the most part of his career in the forward line.
Deluca has kicked 14 goals in 30 games.
Deluca's 3 goals against Essendon is one of only 2 times he has kicked more than 1 goal in a match. The other being 2 the following week.

Deluca is a very ordinary footballer, slots in nicely along side Longmuir and co.

Deluca - Alessio mark 2, but he's still better than Henneman who is the biggest stiff, as most bombers fans would agree.

Absolutely agree, but Henneman isn't in our best 22.

As for Alessio, he wasn't great. He did win us some games.
Averaged 4 marks a game and kicked 191 goals in 179 games. Thats a lot better strike rate than Deluca.

Essendon will win a flag before Carlton. Carlton just dont have what it takes anymore. Koutafides is getting paid too much and Lance is not very good. They should merge with the Tasmania team and become the Tasmania Blues.

And you believe that will give us back the competitive edge?
