Essendon Will Play Finals

Remove this Banner Ad

Yes we did lack speed last year, however that style we played got us close in most games and Essendon supporters could argue that if we had a couple of key players in the side that were injured, we would have won more games. Not saying we would have made the finals though.

Going into 2007, speed has been rectified by our draftees from last year provided they live up to their reputations.

Speed may have been rectified via recruiting but they won't be ready for a couple of years.

I will compare your team to Richmond's. We are not a top team yet, if you are correct then you should beat us in almost every position.

Example: If you compare Courtney Johns (FP) to our FP playing as a 3rd tall then you will see we are much better. Kent Kingsley for this role, with Riewoldt, Hughes and Schulz behind him, dominate Johns.

This is off the top of my head, so I will likely leave out important Tiger players...

BACKLINE:

FB: M.Johnson M.Michael A.Welsh
HB: A.McPhee D.Fletcher N.Lovett-Murray

B: Chris Newman Darren Gaspar Andrew Raines
HB: Joel Bowden Graham Polak Dean Polo

Your BP is Welsh. We have Raines! We win.

Michael and Gaspar are both aging FBs who were both AA for what I know. Michael should be better next year by a fair bit. Your win.

Newman and Johnson play different roles but in quality of player you clearly are not better in this position.

As a 3rd tall attacking defender you have Adam McPhee, who do we have? Joel Bowden. He is 100X better than McPhee, way greater difference than Michael is over Gaspar.

Polo >>>>>>>>> Lovett-Murray. Potential wise and also performance wise (how many BOG's does LM have?)

Anyway if Polo was in the middle, then we have B. Deledio, M. White, P. Bowden or K. Johnson playing there.

Fletcher is a great player and makes your spine look good. Polak is unkown but I would be happy if he performed to Fletcher's level (which HAS dropped recently). Your win.

Your backline is slightly above average IMO (Richmond's is below). Fletcher has lost "it". McPhee is an okay player but compare him to Joel Bowden. Raines is better than any small defender you have. Who's going to stop your opposition's 3rd best forward??

I don't mean to be harsh, I have high hopes for Essendon and wish you well, but this is interesting discussion. It might make you a bit angry reading someone's post who is trying to dissect your weaknesses but that was the intention of the thread.

So to answer my own question, why stop the 3rd best tall when you can't even hold the 1st tall ;) (*wink* *wink* Mathew Richardson :) *wink* *wink*)

Your backline is better than ours in the spine, but for HBF'ers and running or attacking defenders we are better. KPB is our big weakness, and your big strength. Depth wise we are overloaded with running HB's so when injuries hit I'd question your backline (imagine no Fletcher or Michael!)

Essendon clearly win 2

Richmond clearly win 2

Richmond probably marginally win the other 2

MIDFIELD:

C: M.McVeigh J.Watson S.Camporeale
RUCKS: D.Hille J.Johnson B.Stanton

C: Nathan Foley Brett Deledio Shane Tuck
RUCKS: Troy Simmonds Mark Coughlan Kane Johnson

Simmonds >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hille - very easily too

Coughlan and Johnson are about even.

Kane Johnson (our B+F winner and captain) is better than Stanton.

Brett Deledio is way better than Watson and will improve more than him.

McVeigh is probably better than Foley currently, but potential wise the gap could close real soon.

Tuck is pretty even with Campo, haven't seen enough of Campo's recent form but Tuck almost always gets over 20 possies.

Midfield is sought of close, but we have so many promising midfielders coming through like Tambling, Meyer, Foley, White, Raines and Deledio etc

In the future our midfield will be awesome as we have recruited that way... the 2006 draft will help you but won't be ready for a while.

Essendon clearly win 1

Richmond clearly win 3.

2 are pretty close.

FORWARDS:

HF: J.Hird S.Lucas A.Lovett
FF: C.Johns M.Lloyd A.Monfries

HF: Nathan Brown ___ Mathew Richardson ___ Kayne Pettifer
F: Andrew Krakouer ___ Jay Schulz ___ Kent Kingsley

James Hird <> Nathan Brown. The old Hird is better, but the 2007 Hird will not be better than a fully fit Brown. In fact, I would take Brown over Hird in 2007 any day. Both are quality.

Richardson >>>>>>>>>>>> Lucas.

Lucas is very good, but he simply can not match Richo.

Pettifer >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Lovett

Petts was in the top 10 for inside 50's in the league, top 20 for kicks.. he should be pushing AA in 2007 and I won't expect any less.

Krakouer has many BOG efforts, Monfries does not. Consistency is a funny thing though. I dont know Monfries enough to judge this one.

Lloyd >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Schulz

No doubt here, you have the best FF in the competition and if you can get it to him you should win more than 3.5 games. If Schulz can put in more 6 goal efforts again then the gap might close a bit, but Lloyd is a gun.

Kingsley >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Johns

Enough said.

Both forward lines look quite good. But if your midfield is struggling, Hird will go there. Then take out Lloyd and you only have Lucas. No depth. After Hird, Lucas and the Actor the quality drops away considerably.

Essendon clearly win 1

2 are close (although really Brown >> Hird '07 but that could be too biased, I'm unsure)

Richmond clearly win 3

INTERCHANGE: J.Laycock K.Bradley C.Dempsey A.Davey

INTERCHANGE: Adam Pattison Richard Tambling Mathew White Danny Meyer

That's up to you, but in the future our bench could all be stars (especially Bling and Meyer).

The way I see it:

Essendon clearly win 4

Richmond clearly win 8

Richmond marginally win 2.

4 are pretty close.

Who's to say a couple of the new recruits won't impress in their first year? But generally you're right.
Bottom line is, I can't see us not improving. I doubt we will see finals this year but we should definitely improve.

Sorry, I stopped reading there. After that I felt no need to continue. You have to get some sort of an idea.

So you think the majority of the team are absolute duds, but you have high hopes of playing finals?

I have hopes of making finals, it can happen. Lucas, Lloyd, Fletcher and Michael are guns, we have a few good midfielders, hird is hird, and the rest can only improve.

Building endurance rather than power?

Im just trying to get muscle.Last year i was anorexic-43kg and im 167cm, now im over 70, so i dont know, my neighbour is my trainer-he knows his stuff. So im just going along with it and as long as it looks good thats fine with me

You think 2006 was Fletcher's career best season do you?

If you didn't stop reading you would have read this on the next line:
