It seems that nobody is rating us. The "experts" have us either missing out on the 8 or just scraping in. . O'meara covers an aging Mundy. Lobb only kicked 37 odd goals - that's a small forwards return. A fit Taberner and Fyfe and maybe Treacy added to a maturing engine room and backline ....Maybe I am delusional (probably) but I see us improving this year.

Yep, I agree with you, a fit Fyfe and a year's growth into our young team there is no doubt our team has improved significantly despite our player losses. We have a tough but reasonable draw. If we can win nearly all our home games then we should be having a crack at the top 4. Not sure why we lost so many home games last year🤔

Undefeated, +300 points differential, Brayshaw Brownlow, Fyfe Coleman, Schultz Norm Smith

Really though, perhaps some regression in adapting to a new forward structure, too 8 but not setting the world on fire.

I got us winning 16 games. 16 wins would have got us into the top 4 last year.

Top 4 and get to a preliminary final would be ideal. Then it's game on.

In hindsight finishing 5th not 4th was probably a good thing.

Finishing 5th winning a final and while getting beaten easily by Collingwood the final score was 20 pts which wasn't a 10-11 goal thrashing that it could have been.

Instead of going out in straight sets.

I was the 1st one to Say this on certain threads. Dont get me wrong, Freo getting top 4 in 2022 would of been epic. But In a way, It was a Blessing in Disguise we got 5th last season.

I said it before and Say it Again, what you posted, exspecially I bolded and underlined, I agree with.

Look at the teams that Beat us in Perth last season: Saints, Collingwood, Demons and Swans. Saints were the weakest out of the 4 but gave us the kick up the bum we needed and our form improved dramatically after that shock loss to the saints in round 2.

The other 3 made the top 4.

Had the dockers got top 4, Cats would of smashed us in the Qualifying final in the MCG. We then would of faced either Magpies or Swans. Both sides would of been confident in beating us in Perth in a semi final. Dockers going out in straight sets would of been horrible. Being copped about going out on straight sets would of been bad here on Bigfooty. But copping it on social media such as face book would of been much worse.

And Looking at Freos finals performance last season. That 2022 elim final win was epic. come from 40 points down and still pulled off a famous win. The magpies loss the next week wasnt bad, it was sort of expected.

Many times in 2022 the dockers trailed in a small margin and somehow go up a gear in the 3rd quarter and have the lead at 3 quarter time.

Crazy stat was when freo lead in 12 games in 3 quarter time last season. Guess how many games they won? Yep all 12.

If you want to know how awesome that finals win vs the dogs last season, just look at the Austopsy review thread and game day thread.

Saying that.....

I dont think we will finish top 4. Its Still a very young squad. I think freo is still one or 2 years away from making top 4 and contending for a flag. I think the dockers in a comparision of a similiar path to West coast slow build up of 2002-6 or Richmonds path from 2013-17. Eagles made 3 elim finals in 2002-4, made a grand final in 2005 and won a flag in 2006. Richmond made 3 elim finals in 2013-5 , missed out on finals in 2016 and won a flag in 2017.

I think we will make an elim final in 2023 and 2024.

I say anywhere between 5th to 12th again. It will be tight. Most dockers fans would of been surpised about those 15 wins, 1 draw and 6 defeats in 22 regular season games last year.

I say we will finish between 7th to 10th. I wont be suprised if Freo gets 9th or 10th. Its 23 games and it will be a tight squeeze for finals spots again. Im happy to win 8-10 games at home and 3-5 wins away in 2023. Seems like 13 or 14 wins is needed to make finals.

I would be happy getting 7th or 8th with an elim final spot. I want to make back to back finals under Justin Longmuir. Anyone that has known me to post here, knows how Obsessed I am with Freo making finals for 2 years in a row.

We have only done it once and that 2012-5 under Ross Lyon.

Many posters on here Have known about me talking about the Chris Connoly coaching era of 2002-7. Only thing to look back on was that 2003 elim final loss to essendon and that 2006 prelim final run. should of made finals ever year from 2003-6.

Great, carefully reasoned post thank you.
Most dockers fans would of been surprised about those 15 wins, 1 draw and 6 defeats in 22 regular season games last year. Yes with a qualifier. I think in the previous 2 years we had a terrible time with injuries, one of the worst in the league, nearly whole seasons of missing 6 or so of best 22. 2022 was the opposite. Realising this makes 2022 much less of a surprise.

16 wins would be very nice but it is now a 23 game season. 17 is the new 16.

I'm really hoping that we don't have to adapt to a new forward structure - last season we didn't have one;).

Injuries aside (which can wreck anyone's season), if our level or professionalism is as described, I'd say the plateau of performance is unlikely given the ridiculous amount of growth there still is in the squad. That said, our draw could cancel out whatever gains we make in that space if teams are similar in strength to last year.

So lets hope the players aren't drinking their own bathwater over last year.

We have 11 games against the lowly sides from last year. Some of these games we had some trouble with last year (e.g. Crows and GWS away), plus some sides will improve.

Then we have 12 games against the better sides from last year (including Carlton), with 6 home and 6 away. To finish top 4 we need to go 50/50 from these 12, on top of winning the 11 easy games games above. It's possible, but it will also be very hard for such a young side. I will be happy with 13-15 wins and in that lower part of the 8. If injuries happen then we could be outside the 8.

15 wins probably gets us 5th

5th again would be a great result.

Inclined to agree with the "plateau" hypothesis given the squad demographics.

2024 should be bloody exciting though.
Yep, the demographics really shout plateau or drop this season. When you look at our list, not Enough of our core 22 have reached 100 games which is critical for sustained performance over the season and even more so in the finals.

Only 7 of our best 22-25 over 85 games.
and 7-8 with under 50
