McLaren could've waited for Ric to go softs. Not much to lose. Now they lost it all.
Yep. For all the comments on DR's troubles this year, McL are doing him no favours with strategy. Sainz and Ham went onto softs at about the same time they put DR on hards. Even if McL are murderous on their tyres, he could easily have just stretched the mediums a few more laps and gone to softs 'til the end.

Stroll went onto softs at the exact same time. Daniel asked his race engineer at the end if the softs made it to the end and was told they did but started to struggle towards the end. He would have been pissed because he did say to go longer on the mediums and put softs on.

It's a real shame. That move he put on the Alpines was pretty amazing; would've done wonders for his confidence if it could have translated into a decent overall result.

McL are lucky that Ferrari keep f**king up their strategy so badly, otherwise there might be a bit more of a spotlight on how bad they've been.

So the official party line from Binotto and Sainz is that the Ferrari lacked pace and that is why they failed to get a podium, not their total shambles of a “strategy”.

At least LEC is calling it as it is, saying that he had good pace and no idea why they pitted him early when he said tyres were still good

"This Aston Martin team is clearly applying the energy and commitment to win, and it is therefore one of the most exciting teams in Formula One today.

"I have known Lawrence and Lance for many years and it is very obvious that they have the ambition and passion to succeed in Formula One.

"I have watched as the team has systematically attracted great people with winning pedigrees, and I have become aware of the huge commitment to new facilities and resources at Silverstone.

"No one in Formula One today is demonstrating a greater vision and absolute commitment to winning, and that makes it a really exciting opportunity for me."

Always an excuse when your jobs in jeopardy.
I think I stated last year that Ferrari needed to change the team from the top down.
This year bears out that they simply have lost the ability to win. It happens to AFL teams when they’ve had a run of losses. They get close to a win but can’t close it out because they second guess everything they do and just don’t go on instinct.
If they had gone on Leclerc’s instincts they any have closed the gap to Max.

How long until Alpine confirm Piastris seat? Really happy he is going to a team that is potentially the 4th best on the grid. Surely he can dominate Ocon who hasnt beaten his past 3 teammates.

Great news for Oscar. I am surprised Nando is going but I guess the multi-year contract is too good to turn down at his age.
Don’t think Nandos been at all happy with Alpine, and to be fair some of their treatment of him in the media has been pretty piss poor, I think they’ve been trying to push Alonso into making this decision so they didn’t have to tbh.

Either way getting Oscar in to develop a potentially top 4 car coming off a decent base this year is the smart move for them IMO

Wow, did not see that one coming. Has he got the inside word on a rapid improvement to the Aston Martin? Or did Lawrence Stroll make him an offer he couldn't refuse? Alonso doesn't have time on his side to wait on a race winning car.

Good for Piastri fans, there is a clear vacancy for him now and I suspect Ocon and Alpine wouldn't object to trying him out in replacing Alonso.

You say that, but Ocon won last year (albeit with a massive dose of luck) and that's what matters the most. In 10 years time few would care that he was outscored by his teammate in 2021, but they will know where he had his maiden (and possibly only) Grand Prix win.

could also be simple as multi year offer at AM v one year offer at Alpine?

Perhaps, we also know him and Otmar Hitzfeld didn't see eye to eye.

Still a big risk for AM and Stroll Sr to offer him a two year contract. Inclined to think it's the dump trucks full of cash outside Alonso's front door.

Here's hoping Piastri gets announced soon.
