Not the greatest endorsement of Lawson by Horner
“We've got some great talent. We've got Liam Lawson on the bench. We're not quite sure, looking at the likes of Colapinto and Bearman and Antonelli, is he at that level? Only time will tell."

Hes getting a gig purely because markos ego doesnt want to be seen letting him end up at sauber.

I like Gary Anderson's balanced views on F1, his closing comments on Danny Ric's F1 career are on the mark.

Won't break BF rules or my own principles on copyright but will quote a few paras of his article that has been printed across various publications, including here:

It appears that Daniel Ricciardo’s Formula One career has reached its end – an 18th place at Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix looks to have been his last race. His eight wins and 32 podiums are certainly fine achievements, but his career tailed off enormously in the past few years.

His peak came during five years at Red Bull from 2014-18. Yet Ricciardo decided to leave Red Bull for Renault in 2019 before a bruising two years at McLaren and he never had another season in a truly competitive car.

Where did it all go wrong? Some people would point towards the decision to leave a winning Red Bull team for Renault at the end of 2018 as the start of his downfall, but I disagree. I think the logic was solid. The big crossroads in Ricciardo’s career was not his departure from Red Bull but in fact the arrival of Max Verstappen to that team.

Before Verstappen burst on to the scene – being promoted from Toro Rosso near the start of the 2016 season – Ricciardo was the top dog at Red Bull. He had won three races to Sebastian Vettel’s none in 2014, when the German had just come off the back of four championships in a row. His hunger, talent and racing skill was that of a man destined for great things.

Verstappen was initially very fast but very error prone. Once he stopped the crashes, Ricciardo struggled to match him. He could do things that Ricciardo just could not. From 2016-18 their records were similar – 590 points to 608 and five wins to four in Verstappen’s favour – but the Dutchman’s ascent to becoming the No 1 driver in reality if not yet on paper was clear.

I would argue, though, that his decision to move to McLaren was the wrong one. Staying with Renault for another year may have increased his reputation, as changing teams frequently means you spend a lot of time bedding into the new environment and getting up to speed with the processes of the team as well as the characteristics of the car.

Yet at McLaren his form dropped off as he was trounced by Lando Norris in their two seasons. It was not a disastrous 2021, with another race win to his name, but in 2022 he scored only 37 points to Norris’s 122.

Of all the drivers to come through the Red Bull scheme, Ricciardo has been given as big a chance for success as anybody. He should leave F1 satisfied with what he has achieved, even if that fell short of his ultimate goal of becoming world champion

Idk about on the mark, but a lot closer than most.

I agree that leaving Renault may 've been a wrong career move, as he was awesome in 2020, and I would say they'd have progressed if he stayed. Alpine has been shithouse without him.

But moving to McLaren was also a good move for no other reason than he'd have expected to be there still now, and it should be him instead of Norris threatening for the championship.

Verstappen was a problem only because the imprimatur would've been to favour him.

Verstappen only stopped crashing once Ricciardo was gone

Idk what it was that made him so crap at McLaren, but there's always a grey area in car racing.

I remember someone saying back in the day that Ricciardo always wanted to go to McLaren and it was only Sainz getting the seat in 2019 that drove him to Renault. When Sainz went to Ferrari in '21 then Ricciardo went across to his preferred choice all along.

Danny's luck with teams was actually terrible when you look at it. His first big break with the reigning 4 time constructors in 2014 coincided with aerodynamics playing second fiddle to the Merc power unit for the next 6 years. May have had an opportunity to go to Mercedes when Rosberg left, but Ricciardo was still happy being #1 at Red Bull (Max joins the next year) and Bottas gets the seat.

Might be biased as an Aussie but I reckon Ferrari should have chosen Ricciardo over Sainz in 2021 all other things being equal, maybe the Santander sponsorship influenced the decision. Even then he still would have been second fiddle to Leclerc in the most regimented 1-2 driver team in the championship so not exactly a better outcome for him I guess.

I'm a Hamilton man but I don't think what Lando is saying is unfair. Unless there was a reason the Mercs were running hotter (failed drink system etc)?

If you watch the clip you see his mate straight away points out "they might be unwell, you don't know their situation bro" and Lando's response is "Well they don't know mine". I think its the total lack of empathy and suddenly making it about himself when he is belittling them

You'd struggle to find an F1 driver that wouldn't make it about themselves tbh haha.

No doubt Lando is a knob, I just don't think he's any more/less than most of them.

I don't mind Lando at all.

I reckon largely it's because he's up against one of our own.

Vettel did some petulant things at Ferrari a lot of people would have been against if he was Webber's teammate. But then he became one of the most loveable drivers on the grid.

Now George Russell on the other hand, there's a giant british knob.

another pick up for mclaren. they appear to be bailing in droves from red bull

Will Courtenay, Head of Race Strategy at Red Bull, is set to leave the team.

He has worked at Red Bull since its first season in 2005 and before that at predecessor Jaguar.

He's set to move to McLaren and will take up the role of Sporting Director, however he will stay at the Milton Keynes based team until the expiry of his contract in mid-2026.

The Red Bull capitulation needs to be studied. Absolutely bizarre.
Tide turned when the allegations against Horner came out. Cracks started appearing and it has clearly upset people at Red Bull. But instead of cutting the snake off at the head with Horner, the body has been leaving on it's on. And could include Verstappen.

I wonder if part of the reason why Dans departure from RB/RBR hasnt been officially announced yet... is because HUGO literally just dropped a new ad campaign featuring him and Yuki yesterday..... gotta keep those sponsors happy I suppose

Daniel has said he's not interested in going back to Red Bull as the "third driver", so I wouldn't expect to see him at too many Grand Prix in the future.

Also means that Liam Lawson has a real shot at Perez's seat. If he can match and beat Yuki somewhat consistently, they might as well put him in that seat for 2025.
