one of the positives i see in adcock leaving is that the backline is where i see the biggest scope for remaining improvement in the team. they performed well this year but still conceded scores on the high side per forward 50 entries. it might be a symptom of the wider gameplan, but collingwood probably play with as much attacking flair as we do yet seem to hold up better defensively when under siege.

a fresh voice down there could really help that defence become truly elite

If we'd won I'd have been too busy laughing at Collingwood losing the grand final due to opposition accuracy but winning on expected score to fuss about the coaching. That and being generally happy.

I detailed my second guess with the coaching approach on grand final day of trying to put a spare behind the ball, and I think that basically cost us the game. Of course, we won't ever know the counterfactual of what would have happened if we'd just kept our usual structure. A bit of a rethink on those scenarios is required as a minimum.
I agree totally. That's where we lost it. And if you put someone behind the ball make sure it's someone who has some defensive nous.

But it's not a head hunt and if it had've worked , fine. Once we saw what happened in the 1st quarter it did my head in that we had another go.

Making coaching and tactical decisions in a random game like footy isn't easy. Everyone understands that.

I dont understand why people seem to have an issue with talking about ways we can look to improve (whether that's tactics, coaches, players, front of house or back of house). Even if we'd won I would absolutely expect the coaches to look at ways we could get better. Its regularly been said if you are sitting still then you are going backwards. As one of the top teams for multiple years we would have had many opponents trying to figure out how to counter and beat us. So we need to find ways to adjust and improve. We lost a GF by points so we are incredibly close but missed by a messily %. So we should of course be looking at every opportunity to improve by a few %

The last time I looked this was a footy club forum. Not a military academy.

Sometimes when you're close to things you can tend to take any suggestions or criticism as breaking ranks and head lopping off worthy.

The one area where we fell down a bit on the weekend was tactically. That's just my honest opinion. I've put up many posts explaining where. They were only small things that made a difference. That's just my impression and opinion. And I expressed it during the game. For whatever that opinion is worth.

Do I blame coaches ? No . They put their heart and soul into it. If they were all to stay would that worry me ?? No. They're fine people and do a good job. If there was someone we thought was better and had better credentials would we get hold of them ?? Obviously yes.

Do I know what I'm talking about ?? Who knows, the same as all the other people who think they do.

Wrong. This is jungle warfare baby.

Sure feels like it sometimes.

In the Art of War you let your opponent make the mistakes.

East to say. Hard to do.

The Art of War also says, Hold your ground! Hold your ground! Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers, I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. Makes you think.

Aragorn is the definition of a system king. Relies on Gandalf and the fellowship to prop him up, didn't even want to be captain of Gondor. As Kingy would say, who is going to stand up and say hey men of the west, stand up and come with me?

Yeah. The capacity to outsmart your opponent without actually having to engage physically.

I've read it many times. Just because it's so soothing to read incisive analytical thought about chaotic situations.

But we digress. I wonder if any AFL coaches are disciples . Should be compulsory reading.

Never create opportunities for the enemy.

Seriously mate… settle down, we know you claim to have mates there, but get a grip - it’s not that personal, it’s a forum.

It’s a thread about our coaching group, I didn’t abuse or savage anyone and qualified my post with some opinion around why I think it’s time to reinvest.
You have had the Mighty Lions experience.

Because some have vested interests, predominantly emotional, in various elements of how we are now. Some because of a presumed personal relationship, some because they've nailed their colours to particular masts too often to be impartial.

I’m sure they would have known that Jed was in the running for a job with Clarko at North. Clarko would more than likely have sounded out Fages as well. Maybe North didn’t formalise the offer until after our season finished.

Iirc fagan has previously said Jed is great on game day.

It's possible fagan has spoken to Clarkson about Jed over the years, and Clarkson has them gone after him.

Curious what/who my perceived vested interest is, if I have one?

Apart from the draft, obviously.

Have 0 insight into how we operate internally but if Adcock was the defensive coach this year, well the defence were much improved this year and he's done a great job.

Good to see our coaches being poached, though, shows we are doing something right.
Adcock will be missed big time....good and smart people like Jed & Dale Tapping from last year are very hard to replace. Great to see them both wanting to move on to bigger and better things for theirselves and their families. If we recruit anyone as good as those 2 for 2024 we will be doing well.

Is there anyone else out there that we may be linked to in terms of replacing Jed. I assume that David Noble is not in the frame.
I’m hardly across the assistant coach availability.

Dogs have apparently let go a few, and was reported Steph hadn’t recommitted yet.

I’d be watching West Coast, and be ready to offer Simpson a role if he gets the chop in the future.

Im always keen on bringing in people from external successful clubs. Think its great to get that fresh perspective. Same I always hope our players go elsewhere for coaching instead of jumping straight into our system. Its sad for them to leave but I think its often the best to learn somewhere else for a while

So I would also be wondering who has retired in the last few years and is looking at getting into coaching. Especially from clubs like Geelong, Richmond, Sydney, etc
