amazing isn't it? We get these clubs that moan and complain about teams going through 40-50 year droughts but happily remind Freo supporters on how many flags Freo has won.

Depends on your definition of misery. Mine is just missing out on the ultimate. For example, I don't mind a punt on the GG's - I'd sooner run last than get pipped on the line in a photo finish. That's misery!!

On that score, it has to be Collingwood.

1964 - lose GF to Melbourne by less than a goal in the dying minutes
1966 - lose GF to St.Kilda by 1 point
1970 - lead by 44 points at half time and lose to Carlton
1973 - finish on top, lose 2nd semi to Carlton. Lead Richmond by 45 points midway through 2nd quarter and lose. Out in straight sets
1977 - lead NM in GF by 27 points at 3/4 time only to draw. Lose the following week.
1979 - lead Carlton on a bog 5.6.36 to 0.7.7 at the 20 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. Go in at half time down! Lose by 5 points
1980 - smashed by Richmond
1981 - 21 points up at the 28 minute mark of the 3rd quarter of the GF. Lose by 20 points to Carlton.
1984 - smashed by over 100 points in prelim by Essendon
1990 - Glory!!!!!!
2002 - Unlucky. Nonetheless, lose in a close GF to Brisbane
2003 - Favourites and get belted in GF by Brisbane
2010 - Glory again!!!
2011 - Best side for most of the year only to get overtaken by Geelong at the business end
2018 - dispose of Richmond in prelim, kick the first 5 goals of the GF and lose to WCE

Beat that for misery.

Well your index is rubbish.

Your south Melbourne/Sydney side won flags in 1909, 1918 and in 1933. Made grand finals in 34, 35 and 36 the another one in 1945.

Didn't make a Grand finals until 1996. Then won a grand final in 2005. Lost in 2006 won in 2012 then lost in 2014 and 2016.

I've seen 5 GF wins.

I think we've been more angry than miserable in our lean patch.

Which is part of the problem.

The cheating that led to those wins is a large part of why your club is in the state it is now.

2 and .................................. 8 losses, you yourself should surely know what a GF loss (not a draw which is another 'tease') is like.

I've only supported a team that very very rarely delivers on promise. It's been around for nearly 130 years FFS. I've seen only 2 of those 15, and 10 'oh so closes'.

The 'arrogance' people claim Richmond fans have in part stems from this.

For 37 years we were the butt of everyone's jokes, and both sides of the equation have had trouble adjusting to the change of circumstances.

oppo fans claiming that after 3 flags in 4 years, Richmodn are still a really ordinary team, and they just got lucky.....All becuase they can't adjust their mindset from jokes about Richmond coming 9th, so rather than adjust their mindset, they make up a fantasyland (yes, you need some luck to win a GF, but you still need to be a good team too, and when you win 3/4, there is a hell of a lot more than luck going on).

Richmond fans, like the kid who has been bullied for too long and suddenly gets to be on top and can't help but rub it in at every opportunity and fly off at the suggestions from idiot oppo fans.

Point is, the 37 years of crap is still very much there. For everyone.

That prelim was crazy, I had never seen a team play as well as freo did in that final. They completely strangled Sydney out of the game. They were destined for the flag that year, too bad they came up against the only team that would have beaten them in the big dance.

Imagine being a Demons fan that was baby boomer and grew up in late 60's and 70's. They saw no finals until 87, NONE!!! Then they go on a magical ride in 87 to make their first finals in their whole life of following, only to see Eishold miss from 5 metres out in prelim final and Jimmy Stynes goes over the mark at siren to allow Buckenara whom is a great kick to get within kicking distance to slam it through and end their dreams in horror that year of the Robbie Flower who went through all the years of no finals have his career end on that note. Then they do make a grand final and humbled by biggest losing margin in grand final to that point. Then make another grand final in 2000 and also destroyed. Also, they would be the only supporter to have seen their team lose a game by 190 points in late 70's and then 189 points over two decades later. They also lived through the horror of losing a player to a Tsunami that had just got married and then lose the wonderful Jimmy Stynes to cancer.
It is not even a close thing. The poor Demons fans that has been living through all this for over four decades of this misery has my sympathy of what they had to put through and still follow their team every year.

It reminds me of when I was a kid, knowing prosperous elderly people who seemed to never throw anything out and were tight arses. That puzzled me until my old man told me that they had lived through the Great Depression. No matter how well they were doing in later life, the misery of those years had stuck with them.
