Whose getting carried away.

Anyways lets use pick 5 on FOSTER!!!!!!!
I've seen how this board operates, I give it an hour until somebody says this without the sarcasm. :p

Well done to Foster, he's been tremendous this year.

Can't wait to see what we can do with him, whatever the outcome. Get him into the Footscray Factory and see if the production line churns out another gun.

Congrats to Foster, huge achievement! :thumbsu:

Without wanting to put a dampener on things I just want to mention some of the names that have won this in the past:
2009: Luke McDonald (not the North player)
2010: Corey Buchan
2011: Jack Solomon / Nicholas Maric / Nicholas Murphy
2012: Tim Membrey
2013: Joshua Scott
My point is that, Membrey aside (who has looked reasonable in his couple of games since being drafted, but nothing special), most people wouldn't have heard of any of these players. There's a very big difference between dominating TAC Cup and being even serviceable at AFL level. In terms of goal kickers a completely different type of player dominates TAC Cup to who does so at AFL level. It's incredibly difficult for somebody that plays like Foster does to transfer his skills to AFL level and it's most likely going to be a while coming if he does.

Not saying he won't make it (and of course I'm hoping he does!), I just don't want to see people getting carried away and thinking we've solved our forward problems. Foster isn't much more than a very late/rookie pick, even after winning the goal kicking award. The chances of him making it are slim, as with most players in that range.

He's probably worth a punt if he slides to the rookie draft and there's nobody we like much better, but let's not get too carried away.

Should add that I have nothing against him, nor is it a post intended to say that we should give up on him. Just don't want to see him (should we draft him) come into the club with any sort of massive expectations placed on his head. Can be tough for young players - especially those with late-draft talent - to handle when they come in with the fans expecting big things. Don't want that to weigh him down.

Regardless, very happy for Jayden and hope he keeps going from strength to strength. :):thumbsu:

What about his game do you think will not translate? I'd understand if he was short or not athletic enough like panos but from what I've read he sounds reasonably athletic.

His athleticism is OK (although from what I've seen is quite the straight-line runner) but he just doesn't have a great game sense in my opinion. A lot of his best work comes from work very close to goal with his ability to read the play and time his movement average. He's not always willing to defend and tends to allow his man just too much space. At ground level he's OK but can fumble. He's got nice hands and is building size and is reasonably strong in the core, I just don't see enough with him.

My concern is at AFL level he's not going to be strong enough to compete with opposition defenders in wrestles, and I'm not convinced he has the smarts one-on-one (like Dale Morris does, for example) to counteract it. He doesn't read the game well enough to be a superb leader and doesn't offer enough around the ground to be a viable option up the field. I see a lot of Redpath in him - he will offer a structural piece close to goal and will probably bob up for a couple goals here and there, but he's probably not going to make it as a future starting 22 piece.

None of this is to say that he won't make it, just that he may struggle to make the transition. If he is to make it, he's going to take a lot of time - he's going to need to continue to bulk up, and improve in most areas of his game. His hands are excellent, he has a very nice vertical leap and has the right idea of how to use strength in one-on-ones, I just don't think he has enough of it.

Not at all trying to be a downer on the kid, just tempering expectations a little. Don't want him to come in with massive expectations hanging over him for years while he develops.

Side note: just on Panos, he's actually re-invented himself as a bullocking inside midfielder and those based in Adelaide seem pretty confident he'll be re-drafted. Has been dominating the SANFL.

How did McKenzie's foot speed look? And General athleticism is he fluid at all or just stiff like he's looked in the footage?

stiff around the contest
you can cleary see his past bball experience
still got a lot to do to improve
dowant like crashing packs when he knows he wont get it

I wonder if we had followed his Dad at a similar age if we'd have been saying similar things? He took a fair bit of time too but he turned out OK - played 150+ games in defence.

Did Fossie end up with 6?
Indeed he did, played very well.
Won a fair bit of 1-1 contest, maned a lot of marks that weren't his, did some great tackles and chase down.
Played deep FF in the second-third Q and did really well.

Jayden Foster
Overall a very good display against the Northern Knights, I'm not one to go into long winded analysis like Dannnnnnnnnn but will give you a taste
of what I saw...

Overall:
Leading: Good turn of speed off the mark to burn off opponent on a couple of occasions
Goal Kicking: Masterclass, Did shank one late in the game but landed in Peter Wrights Chest. Very smooth action and really accurate.
Marking: Very Good on the lead and decent contested needs a need to build strength to clunk more of them
Defense: Good, Manned the mark well and when he needed to chased and tackled
Communication: Was very vocal to where he wanted the ball put for him and instructing other player to get into correct position.
Rucking: Pinch-Hitter, Competed in the time he was there

Started out almost not even playing having rolled an ankle in the Pre-Game warm up but it clearly did not trouble him during the game.

Played Full Forward for almost all of the match there was occasions during the first term he went into the ruck to get touch on the ball but from then on Dominate.

This song is always running through my head reading this thread.

(Ready to be rightly chided by timtamWB for this folk pop nonsense)

Thanks for the reports. Did you see anything of Dmac and if so thoughts.

Awesome that Fosters killing it, hope he has a big finals campaign.

Don't see why his game can't translate over to AFL, he has the perfect set of attributes you want in a forward. Athletic, fast on the lead, great hands and a great kick, absolutely something to work with there.

For the guys who have watched him a bit would I be right in saying he's maybe a bit similar to Jones, and would be a 2nd forward type rather than a first? Not a big problem though we need any good forward we can get, and a consistent Jones would be fantastic.

You're not supposed to talk him up.

Other clubs will take note and you won't be able to get him at a bargain pick.

Also, is it his brother that's on The Recruit?

Well of course all that only matters if he can recover from his multiple knee recos, and various other diseases :p

I'd say its probably not otherwise we would have heard about him being a F/S prospect too. Not 100% sure tho
