S38 Round 2: Sin City Swamprats (16.15.111) d Fighting Furies (11.11.77) at the Hippodrome.

A bit of an early season reality check for us this round, with a reminder that defence and two-way running is essential to winning a game of qooty.

Now I don't want to imply that our forward line is impotent, not after last week's performance, but it's ability to get back to peak hardness for the next round is in question. ShaunDuggan followed last week's sterling 9.1 with 3.4, spraying his shots all over the place and creating quite the mess for his teammates to try to mop up. Our forward pockets in JyeDye and Silky23 did what they could with Shaun's leftovers, kicking 1.1 and 2.0 respectively (Silky doing this from 2 kicks, 2 marks), while Feraligatr let her temper get the better of her, giving away two critical free kicks despite an otherwise solid performance of 11 disposals, 3 marks, 2 tackles, and 1 goal 2 behinds. The Cryptkeeper was creative on the flank with 11 disposals and a goal, and Orange crush realised that his auspicious debut has now led to a bit of attention from the opposition, who kept themselves goal side of him to prevent any scores, though he was still effective working up the ground with 12 disposals and 4 marks.

NaturalDisaster dominated in the ruck with 13 hit outs, 20 disposals, and a goal, Frothies Mcveigh had 23 touches (and to belabor the innuendo from the previous paragraph, sprayed his three shots on goal in filthy manner), and Edmund hunt was busy on a wing with 27 possessions and a goal, and omgfridge having it 19 times, but also throwing his elbows out a bit to give away 3 free kicks. Grockadoc gave a bit of run through the middle with 14 disposals and a goal, and rfctigerarmy not only had it 19 times, but set a defensive example with 4 BONE SHATTERING TACKLES! There were a few midfielders who were content to sit by and watch all the work get done by others, with crazywildhorse (11 disposals) and Shueygod (1 kick) both well down on their usual performances.

Down back, SplintWhisky was busy not letting the side get blown away, and intercepted the ball with 4 marks while having 7 disposals, though our other KPD in Toump Ass was down on his usual stopping game with 9 touches to go with his 2 marks. Chronz enjoyed his move up the field by providing a lot of run off half back with 15 disposals and 5 marks, and Sab22 was busy from the BP, cutting the Swamprats' forward entries off 5 times and having 16 disposals. Rioli8217 was unable to work himself into the game with only 5 touches, and James Colorado's blatantly transparent move of moving himself upfield for some easy Qerrins paid off for him but not the team, with 17 disposals and 1 tackle to at least remind him of what human contact feels like.
Sorry boss, my concentration was gone after watching the Giants-Hawks game .... sorry (not sorry)

"Spraying his shots all over the place and creating quite the mess for his teammates to try to mop up."

This line is so accurate.

More accurate than my 'spraying'.

S38 Round 3: Fighting Furies (13.3.81) d Coney Island Warriors (10.7.67) at Van Cortlandt Park.

Back on the winner's board after a hard-fought, competitive game against the Warriors.

After copping some feedback last week for spraying their shots over everything except the open goal, the forwards improved their accuracy this week to ensure that they only hit the target (aside from a few dribbles to the side). ShaunDuggan kicked 5 straight from 5 kicks to keep himself in the Fred Medal hunt, and was ably supported by krided in his first game for the season (3.1 from 4 kicks) and Orange crush with 2 goals from 9 possessions from the HFF. The Cryptkeeper was handy with 10 disposals and 2 marks, while Feraligatr was quiet in a decoy role with the 6 disposals and 1 behind. JyeDye didn't trouble the statistician besides 1 tackle, which was held for a suspiciously long time...

The midfield fought valiantly against a very competitive engine room from our opponents, with NaturalDisaster having 10 hit outs, 9 disposals, and 2 tackles, omgfridge 24 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles, and a goal, with support on the outside provided from crazywildhorse who had the qooty 23 times with 3 marks and 2 tackles. The fierceness of the contest was evident in the reduced impact of some of our silkier mids, with Frothies Mcveigh having the qooty only 8 times to go with his 3 tackles, and Shueygod getting boot to qooty only 4 times (for one goal), though did provide a vital link from the inside to the outside with 10 handballs. Edmund hunt's frustration became evident with the 2 free kicks given away, as he was well held on the wing with only 7 possessions and 2 marks. Our rotations had contrasting games, with rfctigerarmy having a maximum impact game with 18 possessions and a goal, though Grockadoc was kept quiet with only 6 possessions.

Down back, SplintWhisky was superb in FB, with 7 intercept marks to go with his 8 possessions, though Toump Ass was quiet at CHB with 4 possessions and 0 marks. Rioli8217 (5 possessions) and Sab22 (1 handball) were quiet due to the game being played in the corridor, though Chronz continues to enjoy being moved further up the ground, having 7 possessions and 4 marks on the HBF. James Colorado's utterly transparent move of playing off the half back flank to stat pad with some cheap qooties continues to pay off, having 12 possessions (all uncontested), 5 marks (all in acres of space), and 0 tackled. Inspiring onfield leadership.

S38 Round 4: Fighting Furies (22.12.144) d Gumbies FFC (20.9.129) at The House of Gumby.

An utter shoot-out, with both teams bringing their kicking boots in front of goal (there's plenty in that other league that can learn a few things from this match, and yes, us qooty players are also elite athletes).

Up at Full-Forward, ShaunDuggan brough a certain accuracy that would surprise his office cleaner, helping himself to 8.1 from 9 kicks (and with only 2 marks, was incredibly effective with both handball receives and gathering the qootball off the deck). JyeDye helped himself to 2 goals from 2 kicks, and krided had 3.2 from 5. Feraligatr at CHF proved a fine linkwoman between the midfield and her fellow forwards, with 7 kicks, 3 marks, and 11 handballs, while also kicking 2 of the finest herself. The Cryptkeeper was in fine form, with 19 disposals, 5 marks, and 2.1, with orangecrush continuing to impress in his debut season with 4 kicks, 5 marks, and 11 handballs to keep the play flowing, kicking 1.1 himself.

The midfield gelled together this week, with Shueygod returning to form with 32 possessions, Frothies Mcveigh having 12 possessions and 2 goals, and omgfridge having 21, 1.2 in front of the sticks, and 5 tackles. On the outside, Edmund hunt ran riot with 32 possessions, with crazywildhorse on the other wing having 25. NaturalDisaster had a quiet game in the ruck, with only 2 hit outs to go with his 7 possessions, being replaced with Grockadoc who had 16 hitouts, 17 possessions and 5 tackles. Off the bench rfctigerarmy (23 possessions, 5 tackles, and a goal) had a day out.

Given the scoreline it's obvious that the backline spent some time under siege. SplintWhisky worked all day under trying conditions, having 14 possessions and 6 marks, Rioli8217 having 10 possessions and 3 marks, and Sab22 having 8 possessions and 3 marks. Toump Ass didn't have his best outing at CHB only managing 1 mark to go with his 9 disposals, and Chronz scrapped all day for his 8 possessions and 2 marks. With 16 possessions, 2 tackles (applied only begrudgingly) and 9 marks across the HB line (all uncontested), James Colorado had a perfect game by his standards; hidden in the easiest position in the ground, he didn't do anything except stat pad like a boss.

S38 Rd 5: Fighting Furies (15.10.100) drew with Ophidian Old Boys (14.16.100) at rfctigerarmy's Hippodrome.

A see-sawing match saw both sides gain and lose momentum throughout the four stanzas, with ultimately both teams running off as, in a way winners, and in another, more accurate way, losers. ShaunDuggan, in a form that surely must surprise anyone who has to clean up after him in real life, maintained his stunning accuracy with 7 goals straight from the only 7 times he touched the qootball! @JydDye showed signs of frustration playing next to such a rampant ball hog, having only 1 kick for 1 goal, though krided was able to work himself into the game a little more, having 4 possessions which were all used to assist others' in their scoring efforts. Feraligatr starred as usual in CHF with 16 disposals and 3 marks that lead to a score of 1.1, and The Cryptkeeper maintained his solid form of late, kicking 3.1 from 10 possessions and 2 marks, though Orange crush was hungry, kicking 0.3 from 13 possessions and 6 marks.

NaturalDisaster returned to form in a massive way, having 15 hit outs, 25 disposals, and 2 tackles, Frothies Mcveigh penetrated the OOBs backline thoroughly with 16 kicks, 9 handballs, and 8 tackles that lingered a little too long for fake sport, omgfridge had the qooty 18 times to go with his 6 marks, and Shueygod maintained his good form with 18 possessions and 3 tackles. crazywildhorse had his run of the wing with 23 possessions and 6 marks, and Edmund hunt had 16 disposals, 5 marks, and a goal on the other side of the ground. rfctigerarmy and Grockadoc, after absolutely colossal games in the previous round, struggled for impact in this match having only 2 and 1 possessions, respectively.

Down back, SplintWhisky continued to attack from the last line of defence, having 18 disposals and 7 marks, with Rioli8217 (8 disposals) and Sab22 (5 disposals and 1 mark) providing ample support on the most thankless line of the ground. Toump Ass returned to form in a big way with 20 disposals and 5 marks, and Chronz had 13 disposals and 5 marks, relishing his new role this season to provide a counter-punch from the HBF. James Colorado seemed to have been figured out, good for only 13 disposals, 4 marks, and 2 lazy attempts at a tackle, with his only notable contribution to the result being to give away 2 petulant free kicks at critical junctures of the game.

S38 Rd 6: Fighting Furies (19.14.128) d West Coast Wonders (13.4.82) at rfctigerarmy's Hippodrome.

A more team oriented performance from our forward line saw the Furies start strong, hold off a Wonders charge in the middle quarters, and then kick away to record a solid victory. rfctigerarmy came from the bench to provide another option at Full Forward, kicking 4 straight from 14 disposals (and also laying 5 tackles), showing ShaunDuggan that there is more to forward craft than selfishly hogging the limelight and sidelining your teammates. Shaun was good for 2 goals 2 behinds from 11 disposals, and decided for some reason to apply some defensive pressure with 5 tackles that led to both his opponent and himself lying on the ground together for quite some time. krided continued his run of solid form in the pocket, kicking 2.2 from 4 disposals, and JyeDye had his biggest game of the season so far, with 3.3 from 7 possessions. Feraligatr was down this round, having 10 possessions and 1 mark, though Orange crush continued his excellent form on the HFF with 2 goals from 16 possessions and 4 marks, and The Cryptkeeper remained busy, having 16 possessions, 5 marks, and 2 tackles on the other flank.

NaturalDisaster continued with the previous round's form, having 17 hit outs, 20 disposals, 4 tackles, and 2.1 in front of goal, Shueygod had another solid outing with 23 disposals and set the standard for midfield defensive pressure with 5 tackles, though Frothies Mcveigh was down on output, with only the 4 disposals requiring Grockadoc to come off the bench and show how it's done (10 disposals, 4 marks, 1.1 in front of goal). omgfridge was prolific in the Centre, with 27 disposals, 8 marks, and 4 tackles, and on the wings, Edmund hunt was a colossus with 31 possessions, 5 marks, and 1 goal 1 behind, and crazywildhorse providing plenty of run 22 possessions, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 1 goal 1 behind.

The dominance up the field saw the backline having reduced statistical impact, with S38 Full Back revelation SplintWhisky only touching the ball once (1 mark, 1 handball), Rioli8217 having only the 2 kicks, and Sab22 taking responsibility for the counterattack with 13 disposals and 2 intercept marks. Toump Ass wasn't needed as much as he was last week (6 disposals, 3 marks), and Chronz continues to excel with 14 possessions. James Colorado had his typical easy day at the footy, interspersing his 13 soft possessions and 3 uncontested marks (no tackles, exactly on point for him) with signing autographs on the boundary for fans who tried to avoid it and insisted they had actually come to see everyone else.

S38 Rd7: Fighting Furies (17.8.110) d Dragons FFC (9.7.61) at Ljp86's Lair.

The Furies' winning ways continued in Round 7, with a comprehensive 49 point win over our S32 Grand Final opponents, the Dragons FFC. Our experiment with maintaining a forward line with multiple avenues to goal continues to serve us well, and a high accuracy in this game provided an always welcome percentage booster. ShaunDuggan continues to think of the Fred Medal above any other considerations, with 3.3 coming from his 6 kicks, though his attitude has been rubbing off on JyeDye (2.0 from 2 kicks and 1 handball) and krided (1.1 from 2 kicks). Feraligatr provided an example for selfless play from CHF, with 9 disposals and 4 marks, The Cryptkeeper chipping in with 1.2 from 14 disposals, 3 marks, and 4 tackles that may have been held long enough to verge on the tender caress region, and Chronz continues to enjoy his newfound freedom of this season, roaming along the HFF for 13 disposals, 6 marks, and 1.1 on the scoreboard (though he still needs to shed his "make them earn it" attitude from his FB days of last season, giving away 2 frees this match).

The midfield received silver service from NaturalDisaster and his 13 hitouts (together with 17 disposals), and omgfridge had a match redolent of his Mobbs Medal season, with 26 disposals, 6 marks, 2 tackles, and a goal. Our rover and ruckrover were quiet, with Frothies Mcveigh (7 disposals and a goal) and Shueygod (3 disposals, 1.1 on the scoreboard) both well held, though the slack was taken up by Grockadoc (16 disposals, 2 tackles, 3 goals straight) and rfctigerarmy (14 disposals and a goal) providing a lot of run from the bench. On the outside, crazywildhorse (29 disposals, 5 marks and a goal) and Orange crush (22 disposals, a freakish 11 marks, and a goal) provided excellent links between the midfield and forward line.

Down back, SplintWhisky was not only at his miserly best at FB, he also intercepted the qooty 6 times and helped himself to 13 disposals, with Sab22 reliable as always with 11 disposals from the BP. Rioli8217 provided an incredible drive from the other BP, having 19 disposals and 8 marks, linking well with Toump Ass at CHB (14 disposals, 4 marks, 2 tackles), and Edmund hunt who got his hands dirty with 16 clean disposals. Our resident soft, unaccountable HBF captain in James Colorado seagulled his way to 18 disposals, 7 marks with no one within about 200m of him, and 1 act of grab-ass which was recorded as a tackle.

S38 Rd 8: Fighting Furies (14.13.97) d Roys FFC (10.5.65) at rfctigerarmy's Hippodrome.

While the Furies continue to win, our accuracy this week was a regression compared to the disciplined performance in front of the sticks that has characterised much of our season to this points. A few goals were left out there, and what was looking like the Roys were going to be routed like an old folks' home with a gastro outbreak ended up being a relatively light 32 point win; the old folks' home ending up feeling the defeat as if they had ran out of jam for their scones, instead.

ShaunDuggan continues to score better on the qooty field than IRL, with 4.2 from 6 kicks, though JyeDye was the star of the round, with 5.3 coming from his 8 kicks; poor krided couldn't get a look in, with solitary kick resulting in a behind. Feraligatr was supreme at CHF, with 11 kicks from her 13 disposals, also grabbing 2 marks and laying 2 tackles on her way to 2.1 in front of the sticks, though she was ably supported by The Cryptkeeper's 10 disposals and 10 marks, and Chronz's 14 disposals, 5 marks, and a goal.

NaturalDisaster broke even with his Roys counterpart in the ruck, each having 10 hitouts, though the Furies ruckman also had 21 disposals and 5 tackles to take the honours. omgfridge was quieter than he was the previous round (12 disposals, 4 marks, and a tackle), though Frothies Mcveigh saw a return to form with 14 disposals and 5 tackles, with his performance overshadowed by Shueygod's massive grunt work of 8 tackles to go with his 23 disposals. crazywildhorse (18 disposals, 5 marks, 5 tackles) and Orange crush (11 disposals and 5 marks) provided a lot of run to keep the midfield and forward line in sync, though from the bench, Grockadoc wasn't required to repeat the previous round's heroics, only being required for one mark and one handball, and rfctigerarmy registered donuts while he spent his time on the ground signing autographs on the boundary for his adoring fans.

SplintWhisky was too busy repelling Roys' forays to register too many disposals (8 possessions, 4 marks), and Sab22 (4 disposals) and Rioli8217 (11 disposals) were a little quieter on the stats sheet than they were the last round, but this was a reflection of the dominance up the ground. Toump Ass' ensured his bulk meant the Roys would attempt to go around him, with his heat map indicating that he prevented directed entry even if he only had 6 disposals and 3 marks. Edmund hunt was prolific with 14 possessions, all won the hard way, and 7 marks as he worked tirelessly to cut off the Roys' entries, though he did cry out for help from James Colorado who seemed to always find himself on the fat side of the ground, with 17 wobbly possessions and 6 almost-fumbled marks.
