B: Starcevich Andrews Payne
HB: Wilmot Adams Coleman
C: Bailey Neale Berry
HF: Rayner Hipwood McCarthy
FF: Cameron Daniher Gunston
Ruck: McInerney Dunkley McCluggage
Bench: Ashcroft, Zorko, Robertson, Ah Chee/Bowes

I guess Joe will have to do some rucking and with Gunston in pushes Lohmann and Fort out and then bring in some more midfield run onto the bench

Cant't see Bailey on a wing, perhaps Lugg, Ash or Robbo or our surprise inclusion that is so secretive.

Putting together a best 22 is going to be really tough next season assuming we get all our deals done. Personally I still think Rich has another good year in him, same with Zorko. I do think we need to genuinely rest them both throughout the season though not just to let them refresh but almost more so to freshen the 22 up and give opportunities to the fringe guys.

If we manage to bring Bowes in I’m not sure he’s in my best 22 at this stage, same with Dev, Lohmann and Ah Chee, all guys I think deserve games and are good enough for the AFL.

Something like this

Gardiner Adams Starc
Rich Andrews Coleman

Mcinerney Neale Clug
Berry Dunkley Bailey

Rayner Hipwood McCarthy
Gunston Daniher Cameron

Wilmot Zorko Ashcroft Ah Chee

Zorko is safe. Hot competition for the other bench spots.

I cant see any improvement to our backline....will remain a problem unless Davis comes up with a master stroke. Same old same old. Wilmot will improve but Rich wont. Basically what I am saying it is time for Rich to play second fiddle to Coleman, Micheal, Wilmott n the Irishman.

A bit of team defence and two way running from the mids will help shore up our backline.

Coleman and Starc still have improvement in them, as does Andrews. We know Andrews is elite at his best so if he can get back to that it will be a huge improvement on this year.

Adding Dunkley to the midfield is huge, adds the defensive runner we’ve been screaming out for. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see Rich spending less and less time on ground. Rich might not even be in the side if we get Bowes. Andrew’s was showing signs in the back end of the year that he’s coming alive again too. Wilmott is a superstar in waiting.

Starc. Andrews. Gardiner.
Kiddy. Adams. Wilmont.

Clugga. JBerry. Ashcroft.
Oscar. Dunkly. Neale.

Rich. Hippy. Gunston.
Zorko. JoeD. Cameron.

I/C Rayner, Bowes, Baily, McCarthy.

Yes don't think Rich is a lock, nor on this years form (apart from a couple of reasonably good games in finals) is Gardiner. No surprise but I would have Payne and reckon given a decent crack from round 1 will develop further.

I hope 2023 is Zorko's last year, if the goes back he could extend his career and that would be at the expense of a Wilmott, Michael etc

Think Linc is also under some pressure to be more consistent otherwise Lohmann

thought it was notable also how much better gardiner played after the weeks break post round 23 - had a shocker against melbourne in that final h&a game but was probably one of our better finals performers. if he can stay fit it would go a long way to making sure our backline holds up well

probably a prime candidate for being managed throughout a season considering his tendency to get banged up

Rich, Zorko, Gardner, Andrews are all good footballers who, if they can get a full pre-season under their belts and play uninjured, are all in our best 22 in 2023 for sure. All of those mentioned had interrupted pre-seasons and played injured throughout this year, consequently affecting their games negatively. So happy Dizzy has re-signed. A fit and firing Dizzy Gardner is a huge asset to our backline.

Are you saying that Andrews played injured again? That would be two years in a row injured

Agree on Gardiner and Andrews.

Others I am not so sure on.

Rich 2021 yes. He needs to be more than a good kick. Was so good at reading the play in 21 but it seemed to elude him a bit this year. Pick him on merit and and include fitness in that. If he has a shortened pre-season, give him a few more weeks to get ready. Regardless give him a break 3-4 times during the year. And if his form is subpar, give him a spell in the 2s. Mitch Robbo should be the template - if you get dropped it's not forever.

Zorko - think he is in a slightly better position than Rich. Much more flexibility in that he can play mid / forward / mid. As long as he is fit I can see him playing the full year - again he should be rested though. I would plan for him as a pressure forward with very short bursts through the midfield, told just to go his hardest for 5 minutes. I didn't mind the look of him in the backline, and I would probably stick him there if Rich is dropped as you wouldn't wan them both back there; not accountable enough.

Lyons is the intriguing one. His best was very good in 2021 and even early 2022. Clearly the OP explanation makes sense. But did we move past him with our new emphasis on pace and acquisition of Dunkley? It's pretty hard to make a case for him. The only way would be putting McCluggage on the wing, and i thought Clugga was getting better and better as a pure mid. Have loved Lyons but he might be the league's best back-up mid next year...
