has zorko made any commitment to playing on next season?

cant find anything but i thought he was tipped to sign a 1 year deal
I did see him quoted last week as saying he will put his hand up for captain again next season when the players vote

Maybe, maybe not. I don't think he should be a lock in the 22 IMO.
nobody being a lock for the 22 would be my preferred philosophy going forward. but if Rich plays like he did against Melbourne in the semi-final next year i think he would be a great addition to the 22

this year he copped a knock to the lower back round 1 iirc and looked proppy for quite a long while after that. only really started to hit his straps in the back end of the season

If Zorko can get fully fit and adapt to a lesser role he could be a very damaging player for a year.

2 ifs.

My other issue with that as others have stated is that in these lesser roles he's competing with kids we want to develop.

His Richmond and Melbourne games showed he can influence a contest but perhaps we'll be better off speeding Bailey and others development to get to this level

He still has more good quality footy left him in 100% should he get fit. I don't think he should be captain.

It's a really tough one isn't it. He was influential in those 1st 2 finals and obviously was amiss against Geelong because he couldn't seem to run or do much else and went off.

Likewise I thought he was awesome when in the back half early in the year.

If we think we're a genuine tilt at a flag next year I'd love to have him there , free of the captaincy. If we're more in development mode looking to'24 or '25 not much point other than whatever mentoring and experience he provides.

I think with Lachie's Brownlow polling since the move, in light of Zorko's age, a case could be made to shift the captaincy his way with Zorks still hopefully to run around one more time.

Zorko may well benefit from fewer outside influences and just be able to nurture and nourish from inside.

One year extention for Zorko is fine with me
When he plays well we are a much better team
Hopefully Zorko can have an uninterrpted preseason but he does turn 34 in Feburary
He needs to concentrate solely on footy in 2023. No other distractions

I hope he does not put his hand up for captain but i have a feeling he will. Zorko probably can still see "premiership captain" tag i recon
That in itself could be a factor in us not going a step closer next year
He has done a pretty good job as captain and looks like he has Fagans backing
But i would like to see a change

100% agree. Now I don’t know what is said at the start of every season but just throw it out their that very position is up for grabs. However also state that there should be a new game plan. Don’t be seduced by making it to the prelim. We’ve played finals the last four years but we can’t get over the hump. Change it up, be brave, show some dare and run. You either play a certain way and by in or you play 2’s, simple. No more favourites.

Neale should be Captain next year.

And I'll be very disappointed if he isn't.

My tip is dev Robertson and Mathieson go elsewhere, along with McStay.

Dunkley, Gunston and Ashcroft come in

Starting point is crucial to deciding our preference for Best 22.

Really hope our starting point is 'we are good but not great, we need to change what we are doing, and become harder to score against' this pre-season.

If our starting point is 'we won 2 finals, we have cracked the formula, let's make as few changes as possible' i think we are in trouble. Not to tumble down the ladder but more of the same, probably finish 5-8.

If mindset A is what we are going with, we should strip it back to core players, and then fill the rest of the positions to whomever is looking best over pre-season, with a particular emphasis on defensive running, which is our Achilles heel.

LOCKS

FB Starcevevich Andrews Coleman
HB ??? Adams ??
C Berry Neale Ah Chee
HF Bailey Hipwood Rayner
FF Cameron Daniher ???

FOLL McInerney Dunkley McCluggage

INT Ashcroft ??? ???? ????

16 players I would lock in.

Spots up for grabs:

ONE KEY BACK: Lean towards Payne. Gardiner might be traded. Lester would be kept as back-up.

TWO SMALL BACKS: Wilmot first preference for his run. Rich probably to be phased out. I did like Answerth but his disposal really is poor. Zorko might be an option if he can't get in elsewhere? Prior another option if not in midfield. Like the theory of Madden but very erratic with the ball in hand. Carter Michael?

ONE MORE MID: Ashcroft to rotate through off bench. I would have Robertson in the lead as next mid in defensive role. I really think Zorko done in the midfield at 34 in round 1. Berry might play more inside mid which could mean Prior on his wing. Lyons could come good again although wouldn't bet on it. Tunstill a smokey. I'd definitely be keeping Dev as there is a spot for him there even with Dunkley and Ashcroft. Rayner another who could do more minutes but he needs to become a regular ball-winner.

ONE KEY FORWARD: More i think about it more i like Gunston. If we don't get him my preference would be 2 rucks, with Oscar playing deep forward and Fort the main ruck. I am not giving up on Fullarton but he is a downgrade on McStay so I would rather go with something different. Henry Smith the smokey to play ruck/forward and replace Fort.

TWO MORE SMALL FORWARDS: I have loved Linc but he should be on notice. Stopped kicking goals and setting them up late in the season and doesn't provide a lot of pressure. Lohman should be told there is a pressure forward spot up for grabs, but we need pressure not another small forward who tries to take mark of the year! If Ah Chee is not playing wing he would be another option. Zorko as long as he can chase and harass an option. Cockatoo might be a smokey if we can lose some weight and get back some running power. T Berry doubt it but who knows. My real smokey would be Madden. He broke the record in the 20m draft combine. Get him on their most attacked defender each week to play a light tag, and just provide forward pressure. Dodgy disposal won't hurt if he gets it as it won't mean we concede a goal.

Can't see any upside in recruiting Gunston. Good player in his heyday but not a game breaker now. He would only stall the development of our younger faster talent. We have Lohmann, Rayner,AhChee and Bailey maybe even Zorko to fill the vacated forward role. We look much better with the 2 talls forward set up.This allows Fort into the team to rotate through the Ruck with Oscar via the bench.
We must get faster across the ground. That leaves Rich,Lyons and an injury compromised Zorks in the cross-hairs. Ashcroft for Lyons,Prior or Michael for Rich and Dunkley for Zorks. Whatever the mix it's time for change both in personnell and mindset. Progress or perish.

I think if Rich looses his distance on his kicks or doesn't start taking dangerous ground through the corridor with his pin point accuracy.....then I feel he should loose his spot next year.

He is so dangerous when he takes territory through the corridor or flat bullet passes to take ground quick and beat flooding defensive efforts ala the Ah Che pass in forward 50....

It feels bad to say but if can't do that consistently then he doesn't offer anything else to keep him in the side

We had massive issues with losing our structure ahead of the ball last season. Gunston is also a proven goal kicker and a great link man, we don’t need game breakers anymore, we need stars in their role and Gunston is exactly that.

People are kidding themselves if they think that the coaching staff will run with an extra small rather than 2 rucks next year if we don't recruit Gunsston. The fact that we rolled Fort out there as the sub on multiple occasions because Fages was worried about Oscar getting injured with Joe's shoulders unable to stand up to rucking is pretty telling.

Pretty clearly for me Gunston > playing 2 rucks, but I do have a small amount of hope about Fullarton.

Yeah agree, I quite like the idea of Gunston now but am worried about the second ruck. If we don’t get him I’m happy going into the season with Fort and Oscar splitting time. I also think if we have Fort in the ruck and Oscar down the line we’ll be reducing opposition intercepts as well.

Do we think Daniher will be pushed up the ground abit next season? Seems he has a shoulder issue but i thought he played productive footy early on this season getting some of the footy up the ground.

You would think something like that will happen. I suspect we'll play a more expansive forward set up next year and try and provide separation between the two talls.

Will probably be our second ruck if we bring in Gunston, so will inadvertently be involved further up the ground. Would help if he got a hit out or two though, he's pretty ineffectual when he's in there.

I would go another step to that and say that if Daniel doesn't get through a full pre-season, he will most likely call it a day. The man is still huge value to our 22 providing his preparation for the season ticks all boxes unlike this year. What a career he has had and how loyal to Brisbane has he been?

Berry Dunkley Robertson
Bailey Hipwood Rayner
Cameron Daniher McCarthy
McInenery Neale McCluggage
Zorko Wilmot Answerth Ah Chee

In: Dunkley
Out: McStay

Play a smaller lineup and see how we go.
Gardiner/Payne is a 50-50 for me, but assume Adams will be injured half the season as is tradition anyway
I'd also play Fort instead of McInenery but Fagan won't so no point listing him.
