The Sydney Swans have won 10 premierships in their 150 years and now they have the cups and flags to show for it.

Sydney have taken the discussion on whether to recognise premierships won before 1897 one step further, commissioning premiership cup and flag replicas of their 1881, 1885 and 1888-90 triumphs, to display in their recently refurbished Moore Park headquarters.

The Swans’ Hall of Fame and heritage committee led by former president Richard Colless has driven the club to treat each of their 10 premierships equally with two won as the Sydney Swans in the AFL era, three won in the VFL era and five won when South Melbourne were in the VFA.

“When we talk about how many premierships we have won, it is 10,” Swans’ CEO Tom Harley said.

Harley said they categorise them under each era: five VFA, three VFL [and] two AFL premierships, but the cups are displayed together in the foyer of the club’s headquarters while the 10 flags hang in the rooms.

In 2016, the AFL Commission considered whether to officially recognise the premierships won before the VFL began in 1897 after former Cats president and AFL Commission member Colin Carter put forward a position paper on the issue.

Carter argued that the premierships won before 1897 should be officially recognised and then presented his case strongly in his book Football’s Forgotten Years that was launched last year.

Carter, who finished his 10-year tenure as Geelong president at the end of 2020, told The Age and the Herald he was rapt to hear that the Sydney Swans were recognising their South Melbourne history in such a tangible way.

“I think what Sydney has done is terrific,” Carter said.

Harley said it follows logic to recognise the flags in such a way as the club celebrates their 150th anniversary with South Melbourne beginning in 1874. They moved to Sydney in 1982.

Carter is likely to be in touch with the Cats to see whether they might follow the lead in finding a way to recognise their seven premierships – 1878, 79, 80, 82-84, 86 – they won through that era.

“What is completely incontrovertible is that the VFL founders for 20 years or more regarded the prior period as part of their competition,” Carter said.

Before the VFL competition began in 1897, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St Kilda and South Melbourne all competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA).

If flags won between 1870-1896 were included in official records Carlton would lead the tally with 22, Essendon 20, Geelong and Collingwood 17 apiece, Melbourne 16, Richmond 13, Hawthorn 13 with South Melbourne/Sydney eighth on the table with 10 flags.
