I see a lot of reserves games Grimbo. And I see the way Poss sacrifices his game to bring the young blokes into the game, and the leadership he shows. The young blokes love him.

That was the basis for my suggestion, nothing more. I don't know if I was talking him up as such... I listed his name amongst many possible names that popped into my head on the spot... including Craig McRae.

I'll also point out that I've never once suggested McRae is a sure thing... just that he should be given a chance and not written off based on his involvement at a club that is rife with failure.

Maybe they don't have the cattle? Maybe they all quit because Wallet spent all his time at the solarium? Maybe all the senior players who went back to Coburg when McRae took over that instead of Rawlings didn't want to play reserves football?

It is true that it could have been everyone else's fault. Another possiblity is that he was part of the problem.

Either way he doesn't have any 'form' going for him.

Nor does Dean Laidley in that case... and clubs all over the shop are clamouring for his signature.

Just give him a chance.

It's not up to me to give him a chance. I'm just trying to have a discussion on whether he's a good candidate or not.

You took little interest but yet you are closer to the mark than anyone here.

People must appreciate the culture/environment that existed when he took over at Coburg. Players such as Bowden, Simmonds, etc were dropped back to Coburg & clearly were not happy. Add to this the types such as Raines & JON that were in their minds festering & felt excluded for the whole club, & I'm not too sure what results were expected from Fly. Any young player with the slighest but of ability & hunger was promoted to the seniors.

The culture/feeling at the whole cub was rock bottom, with a lot of disenchanted players within the make up of the side he was coaching.
 
MIne was a reference to Hooper and not doing a pre-season with Brisbane:p
 
Richmond was a quagmire and McRae was a long way down the pecking order of the coaching staff. Do you judge someone on things they have no control of. The game style, who plays and who doesn't, the politics and infighting both at a team level and club level. When he was given a chance it was with a team filled with guys who didn't want to be there and knew they wouldn't be around next year. It was a poison chalice. I still judge him more on the job where he had control and that was the Qld U18 team which did very well and had a lot of guys come in who well on their way to playing AFL football.

Some of the young Richmond guys who have started over the last couple of years have looked okay but there has not been much development in those who were more indoctrinated into the Richmond culture and the development done prior to McRae coming on board. So blame him a bit for not getting through to more players whlist he was at Richmond but I don't think you can write him off because of it.

Several reasons.
a) The side is never settled due to movement of players between firsts and seconds; and coming back from injury.
b) The top-ups rarely play more than two games in a row and so never get a chance to settle into a role.
c) There is more emphasis on player development than the winning of matches.
d) The standard of the competition has improved over recent years. Five years ago the Lions would be hard to beat with 12 listeds playing; would need to have 14-15 now to get similar results.
e) Being a full-time footballer and training 5 days a week is over-rated.

THE Brisbane Lions have lured triple premiership goalsneak Craig McRae back to the Gabba in an assistant coaching role.

... it is understood former Sydney, West Coast and Fremantle player Scott Watters, who has coached WAFL club Subiaco to consecutive premierships, and Redland QAFL coach and former Collingwood and Richmond player Matthew Francis also have applied for jobs.

As I understand it Gonzo is our head recruiter. I presume he will be staying on until the drafts are over, but what options are there for his replacement?

Graeme Hadley is our head recruiter.

Craig Brittain stepped down from that role after the 2008 draft to become a full-time development coach and coach of the reserves.
