As great a record as Malthouse has eventually had with us, Buckley will take the club to an even more professional level. Remember Malthouse pretty much had a 50 % winning record with us up until the 2007 season, when things started to take off.

Buckley lives and breathes the game more than anyone the club has ever employed in any capacity. No coincidence with Buckley as forwards coach last year, that suddenly the team performance skyrocketed in his first year.

As for the media, Buckley will know how to handle these douche bags a lot easier and won't get sucked into their games at press conferences. Malthouse takes the bait too often and the supporters who need to be informed on matters are left with nothing.

Not a Pies fan, but who's to say that Buckley isn't the reason they won last year & will repeat this year? Before he (re)joined the club they were only just top 4, ever since they've been dominant.

Buckley.

I never anticipated we would go as well as we have under mick in the last 18 months, but it was the problem the club wanted to have.

Make no mistake, Buckley has super coaching credentials, and Collingwood are not so stupid as to simply throw to an untried coach without doing their homework.

The fact Mick is at the top of his game is, really, a recent development to the deal he signed at the start of 09. If Collingwood kept him on they would be pillared for misleading their favourite son-Bucks- so they are in a no-win situation from exterior and rival on-lookers.

Ed, Mick and Bucks signed off on this 2 years ago. Integrity from all parties will see it go through.

Collingwood would show grace by releasing Mick from the prescribed role for 3 years. We (Collingwood fans) will all love Mick forever, a flag this year or otherwise. But no man is bigger than the club, and those in the know believe Bucks is the best thing for the club.

And the best thing for the club is what it's all about.

I've consistently said throughout this year that if Collingwood win the 2011 Premiership, I'd like Mick Malthouse to remain Head Coach for the 2012 season.

Also, I somewhat resent the implication from the OP that Collingwood fans can't and don't think for themselves, and that we all agree with everything said and done by the club and always just parrot the "party line".

Was not intended that way mate, but like so much these days most people believe everything they hear and back things whether they agree or not because everyone else does.

I asked a question at a sportsmans night recently with an ex AFL player who now works in the media and I actually said to him after he answered that he answered it exactly as I knew he would, in fact I said I could of written your answer down for you.

I was seriously just looking for Pies supporters views as it was of interest to me.

If you take it differently mate then so be it.

That is a good point.

With Hudgton, Scott Watters & Mark Neeld, Buckley has 3 of the sharpest minds in coaching at his disposal. Brenton Sanderson will be at Collingwood next season & will form a coaching dream team.

Leigh Matthews didn't say head coach was 20%, he said everything (assistant coaches, sports science, player development etc) was 20% which would make the head coach in his opinion only a percentage of 20%

So be it, but you still need 100%, and the only thing that is a certainty at the moment is that Collingwood is there with Mick on the bridge.

I'm not saying that Buckley isn't as good; he may very well be, hell, he might be better, but to chuck out something that is working and not step back and think "Hang on, when this was arranged the whole situation was completely different, Mick probably needed to go but Bucks wasn't ready, now we're, for all intents and purposes, removing the reigning premiership coach for a first time senior coach."

If no individual is bigger than the club, then I would have thought Buckley would have put his hand up and said "Hang on, this is working for the time being, we're the reigning premiers and we're on track for one of the greatest premiership seasons of all time, maybe I'll stand aside until Mick's well and truly had it."

Fair enough, there just seems to be this common perception on BigFooty that Collingwood supporters are all engaged in one homogenous groupthink and share the same opinion on everything, and never deviate from what the club says and/or are always 100% happy with what everyone at the club says and does, which isn't really the case IMO. Collingwood supporters are just as independent in their thoughts and opinions as any other club's supporters, and are just as able and likely to express a difference of opinion (if that's what they truly believe) from the "party line" as anyone else is.

Buckley

If a player had acted the way Mick has recently (e.g. interview on the footy show) he would have been disciplined and if it continued sacked. Aker is one example.

It is not about Mick, it is about what is best for the club. Keep it in house and deal with it.

In my opinion he was 50 / 50 to get a contract extension and the club looked after him by giving him a contract for 5 years. He has nothing to complain about.

I would love to see Mick coach another club, imagine the rivalry when they play collingwood.

When Tom Hafey first coached against Collingwood, he was given a standing ovation. That would be the same with Malthouse, it wouldn't add anything to a rivalry.

Originally when this succession plan was announced a couple of years ago my thought was why? At the time Buckley was just in the media, coaching an U16 elite team and had done some coaching courses. Nothing significant and nothing that proved he was a sure thing let along going to be a better coach than Malthouse. We were on the up and building towards a premiership with the final pieces to come so why look at forcing a change? I wonder what was about Mick that made them think he might not be able to get the list to break through that final barrier and win a premiership.

Back when it was announced I thought it would have been better to quietly say to Bucks go out there and bounce around a few clubs as an assistant and we'll give you Mick's job when he's done. Go see what others are doing and get a taste of other clubs cultures and methods. Bucks will no doubt have his own opinions, but most of them will have been shaped by Mick.

To the OP, personally I'd rather stick to the known (Malthouse) and have Bucks wait til MM has had a decent run with what he's built. Maybe Bucks comes in for the rebuild or after we've dipped ala Chris Scott at Geelong. If we don't win a premiership this then people will point at Bucks saying this succession plan cost us. If we do win then he'll be under a lot of pressure to win a premiership. Either way, its a rough start to his senior coaching career. Here's hoping we three-peat!

Collingwood are the most arrogant club and the biggest sooks in the afl. If MM is coaching another team next year it will mean he broke a contract with the almighty pies.

He will not get a standing ovation.

if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Of course rewind 2 years ago it was broke.
Now it ain't.

The romantic notion of Buckley returning to collingwood as head coach can wait.

I'd be checking Mick's pockets as he leaves the Wespac Centre on his last day.

Not unheard of in business to need an escort out of a building to avoid any IP being stolen by disgrunted former employees.

Buckley

The odds of Mick taking them back to back are huge, the odds of three in a row with the same coach (should they win as I hope this year) would be enormous considering it's only ever been done by 5 coaches in the history of the game, and only once since 1957, so statistically the odds would be massively stacked against Mick.

He has done a great job and will hopefully retire from coaching with Back to Back flags and Buckley will take over having had the best preparation of any assistant coach in living memory and the support of the players as they have extended contracts knowing that Buckley will be taking over the role.

Not the club line, just my honest opinion.

Very weird and awkward situation for the Pies. Just my opinion but the spirit, atmosphere, motivation and togetherness in the Pies dressing room must be sky high at the minute. No doubt MM has played a massive part in this. The players obviously respect and play for him. Will Buckley be able to maintain the above ingrediants so important in successfull sporting teams or will the mood and momentum all of a sudden change?
MM and Collingwood have been good for each other so I hope for their sake it ends in a civilised manner........somehow I can't.....

In heinsight, of course we would love to keep Mick on for stability, but it's not possible because a deal was done. There is a very good argument that we are a great side at the moment because the deal was done - players rise for the coach and the influence Buckley has had as an assistant coach.
Let Mick go now I say if he doesn't want to stay on as director of coaching.

Malthouse.
But the club cannot go back on the agreement. They asked Buckley to put his coaching aspirations on hold with the promise of this job, he has kept his end of the bargain up and so must the club,
I didnt see this situation coming, but i gotta tell ya, ITS A DAMN FINE PREDICAMENT TO BE IN.
But in all seriosness the club must stick to the deal.

As J.B . Cummings said when speaking of son Anthony, "I taught him everything he knows.....but i didnt teach him everything I know".

Thankfully Bucks had

J.Cahill, R.Walls, L.Mathews, T.Shaw and M.Malthouse as his senior coaches.

He knows what problems leafd to clubs being poor, and what it takes to turn a club around. He knows success, and has had a successful apprenticeship.

Bucks is a well rounded senior coaching candidate, the fact that Collingwood have him sh1ts people, which is great.

when buckley started as an assistant he introduced the 'box formation' that they play with now which commentators always refer to as a refined version of st kildas 'press'. that has won us a flag (could win us 2) so I'm comfortable with buckley coaching. But I hope if malthouse wants to be a senior coach next year the club let him go.
