Autopsy Forget rock bottom - Roos enter the event horizon vs Eagles

The usual, inevitable suspect: On the camera side wing 3 North players charged at an Eagle in possession on the boundary; he handballed infield and all three North boys turned and charged toward the receiver. Can't remember what happened next but chances are it was a handball forward to two free Eagles......one of them Cripps? ....plenty of effort, but woefully, as usual, wastefully misguided. Feels like its been going on for 20 years.

As is being out-crumbed, both forward and back, and, despite the above example, being outnumbered all over the ground.

Selections: Was Kayne Turner playing a farewell game? At this stage its only the young players that generate any interest, and watching Turner and Lachie Young instead of Harvey Jnr and Funky Bergman inspires undeserved wrath for blokes who give their all but are obviously just not good enough. Thank you for your service, sorry for the wrath, its misdirected.
The way the players reacted to his goal indicates everyone knew it was his farewell game, imo.

My boys 7 and 10 both cried.
And then proceeded to threaten the health of any kids at school who may say something.

Some would say extreme.

Im just happy to see someone put up a fight at this point.
My young bloke says no one bothers giving him shit at school anymore.

McKay has become a very average defender. Don't really care if he can take the odd intercept mark but when he has the ball to get rid of it, prepare for the worst. I'm a little disappointed by the fact his offensive game has become zero as of late. When you're in the leadership group, I'd like to see that 2021 McKay on display but anyway...

Phillips still needs a proper pre-season to get going again. This year was about getting his match conditioning up to scratch and he has been great despite the obstacles. Today, he didn't get as much ball but we've seen what impact he has. He will be our next captain.

Corr will become a staple in our backline. Has been very good since Logue has gone down.

Sheezel was his usual superstar self. Too bad his teammates constantly let him down choosing to handball the hot potato to him under extreme pressure.

Taylor has actually been alright since he returned. Maybe I am clutching at straws here, but if Clarko gives him a genuine talking to about where he needs to go, I can still see a role for him.

LDU is a Brownlow medallist in a better team. Poor bloke.

Lmac was nowhere to be seen? Didn't notice him at all today.

Jy was ok in patches but other than that, didn't really notice his impact. Coming back from concussion was always going to be tough, but he's our co-captain and should be leading the way. LDU felt a little on his own today when they usually gel pretty well.

Turner was well... ok? But that's his ceiling. Gonna be delisted.

Young seemed to be confused at every opportunity and probably had 1-3 good moments. That's just not gonna cut it. Delist on the cards.

JZ came on and didn't get off to a good start, but he became more impactful as the game went on. He simply doesn't give up which is an indictment on his teammates.

Give Goldy another contract. NOW.

Goater getting injured and managed was possibly the worst thing today. Late in the game his run would've been crucial.

Scott has been really average as of recent. Knowing what he has produced in the past, I am still far from impressed by his performance today.

Robbie couldn't do much with the ball movement today. So uninspirring that it cost him any real opportunity.

Archer embraces the challenge at every opportunity. I wish his teammates did the same.

Larkey frustrates me so much but at the same time, we move the ball so badly it's hard to place all the blame on him.

Tucker was alright and has been good since returning.

Not sure if Xerri will make it but he is getting involved so I am pausing my judgement on him until he's given some continuity.

Curtis is a star and was basically our only dangerous forward. Comical against one of the weakest teams.

Thomas was very average and didn't have much impact. Stark contrast to last week and his month before that.

Sleevo has become really s**t as of recent. Should honestly be dropped at this point.

Ford was ok but that was about it. Blazed away a few times with the ball in hand.

The whole team was off with a few exceptions. It's a team of individual efforts at the moment. No one is on the same page.

What have you seen to suggest Philips would be our next Captain? Not his junior credential, his NMFC experience. He hasn’t played a lot due to injury and I haven’t seen him drive his teammates.

Zoning with a minute left and they’re chipping around is certainly a strategy.

Clarko’s zoning game plan that was inept prior to his rest seems to be on the way back, with the same piss poor results. People have a crack at Ratts but that game has Clarko’s paw prints on it.

Yeah I get that. I’ve got 3 NM supporting kids who have all but turned their backs. Crappy times.
My 2 are forced to endure every game either in the flesh or live with a crowd of other north supporters, I admire their resilience but I do lock my bedroom door on Sunday nights 😉

Today was atrocious, don't get me wrong. But the club doesn't have the option to walk away and neither do we.

There is one benefit to all that is going on, which is there are no distractions in having a hard look at ourselves. In another world where we snuck over the line against St Kilda, Sydney and so on a lot of the talk would be along the lines of 'we're on the right track!'. No, we're not.

About half a dozen Roos today shouldn't be wearing the jumper. Say what you will about Clarkson but I think he knows who they are.

Our skills are deplorable. Our decision making terrible. Our inconsistent efforts appalling. We are sitting at the bottom of a very deep pit.

What is there to look forward to besides LDU, Sheezel and George?

Well, incredibly this will be the first time our Head Coach hasn't changed inside of two years since 2018. That is astonishing. Who is to say what damage the variance in leadership has caused? If we're 'lucky' the answer could be 'a fair bloody amount'.

Perhaps it's the draft picks talking but 22 was great for us all things considered and 23 could be even better.

And I'm a long way from believing that the game has passed Clarkson by. People love narratives but the man rebuilt Hawthorn twice. He's 55 with the potential to be in the prime of his coaching career. Viney stuck the fat and signs off the field suggest we're going to be strong - and stable - enough to get through this.

I'm not confident, but there are deeper lows than this. Media be damned. It won't be season 24 but I think there's a good chance we'll turn around in 25 and realise that this last two - three years of shitness really was the hardest of hard yards. The ones that we'll tell our kids about one day, just like back in the 80's.

I'm not dumb enough to talk about a big turnaround in a couple years. I do think though that we are in the tail end of this freaking nightmare, as much as it doesn't feel like it right now.

Final thought today

I get Rock Bottom

But what is an event horizon?
The precipice of a black hole.

A point in space where once through nothing* can escape the gravity of the black hole not even light.

Watch Interstellar.

*Hawking radiation is an exception to this I believe.

The warning signs for me started here. Nothing against Tucker, but when I watched this last week I got the vibe they had already pencilled this week in as a win. Their effort seemed to reflect that.

That was asking for trouble. We should have beaten the Saints and didn’t and then built up this week as some sort of grudge match.
The club is run by fools.

Thread started too early. This is a bugbear of mine.

But, through the first three quarters at least today, the following players were noticeably crap;

Larkey
McDonald
Young
Simpkin
Taylor
Xerri
Stephenson

This list doesn't include a bunch of players who were not good, but weren't horrible either, like Corr, McKay, and Phillips.

We are in such a deep hole and it's going to take a lot of digging to get back out.

The great irony of that is the part where Denis asks how many of them they think will be on an AFL list in 3 years time, and that staying there is the hardest part and not getting there which is the easiest.

Take a look at that room, drafts upon drafts of players who made it to another AFL list and performed better, were total spuds or injured out of a career, and its the majority of the room. ******* sad.
Is that who I think it is?

Weak.

Why should he spend hundreds of his hard earned dosh on this club when they haven't given him any sort of return on that investment in about 5 years? What's he paying them for, to go and watch them win 2 games per season and then play like shit in about 15 others?

There was one point today ( probably hundred’s actually) where we had the ball in the back pocket and in screen was Lmac with the ball, Corr and Young and I thought to myself “ it’s impossible for that group of players to get this ball out of our defense”. You see it all the time but it only just occurred to me in this game that they are incapable of creating any meaningful movement of the ball. One of those epiphany moments for me.
